Bishop Olmsted ordains three men to the priesthood

By Ambria Hammel | June 5, 2010 | The Catholic Sun

For the the third straight year, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained three men to the priesthood.

The bishop conferred the sacrament of Holy Orders on transitional deacons Matt Henry, Chad King and John Parks at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral.

"Seeing the love of the people for their priests [during the procession] gives us such a witness of their love and support," Fr. King said after the ordination.

Fr. Henry said the laying on of hands by the bishop was a special moment.

"My only part was just to say yes to that," he said, referring to the prayer of ordination.

Fr. Parks also noted the laying on of hands.

"I just felt that I was being reconfigured in my person," he said. Fr. Parks also mentioned receiving the Eucharist during the orination.

"I was just struck once again that God becomes the Eucharist for us," he said, underscoring God's humility.

Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted said all three priests know well the challenges that the Church faces today, including the shortcomings of its members, “but without losing heart, they are ready and eager to be faithful priests of the Lord Jesus” and convincingly share the faith.

“The three men I have the honor to ordain this year are quite different in personality but united by a deep love for the Lord Jesus, and an eagerness to hand on the good news of Christ in convincing ways,” Bishop Olmsted said in an interview prior to the June 5 ordination.

"From this day forward the people of God will call you 'father,' because you will love people in His name," the bishop told the new priests. He encouraged them to listen to confessions with compassion and called them to defend the unborn and the immigrant.

All three priests cited their involvement in youth ministry in the Phoenix Diocese as part of their discernment process.

Each newly ordained will celebrate their first Mass at their home parish June 6. The Mass times are staggered so the new priests can support each other from the pew.

Phoenix’s three new priests fit right in with the 440 men awaiting priestly ordination nationwide.

Of the 339 diocesan and religious ordinands who responded to the survey by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University, 72 percent are Caucasian. Half to three-quarters served in some parish ministry before entering the seminary.

More than half are between the ages of 25 and 34, roughly the same as last year. The median age of this year’s ordinands nationally is 33 with Fr. Henry, who turns 26 shortly, being the youngest nationally.

The Chinesischer Turm in Munich's Englischer Garten.

From Wikipedia:

"This 25 metre high wooden structure, designed by the military architect Joseph Frey von Johann Baptist Lechner, was built from 1789 to 1790. It was modelled on the "Great Pagoda" in the Royal Botanic Gardens in London. The Pagoda, twice as high as the Turm, was supposed to resemble a porcelain pagoda in the gardens of a Chinese emperor.

In July 1944, the so-called "China Tower" burned down due to heavy bombing, and in 1952 was rebuilt true to the original.

With 7,000 seats, the Chinesischer Turm's beer garden is the second largest beer garden in Munich."

We are working with partners to ensure our communities feel safe in the places they call home.

After speaking with residents, we identified several properties that were linked to anti-social behaviour and criminal activity in the Freehold neighbourhood.

On Friday 5 July, we secured closure orders for two properties. The order will last for 3 months.

Inspector Meena Yasin from GMP Rochdale said: “We have spoken to residents who have been unable to sleep at night, who are scared to carry out everyday activities within their own homes as a result of anti-social behaviour and the criminal activity of a small number of individuals exploiting the neighbourhood.

"Securing these closure orders is a really important step in creating positive change in the area, and we have been working closely with local residents and RBH to proactively tackle issues linked to these properties.

“We will always take action and work with our partner agencies to ensure those who engage in anti-social or nuisance behaviour are dealt with robustly and I would like to thank everyone who has opened their door and welcomed us into their houses, taken the time to speak to us, and contributed to our intelligence picture which has led to these results.

“There is palpable community spirit in this area, created by residents who have lived here for decades. We are working with them to rid the area of criminality.”

At the outbreak of WWII, orders were issued to all airfields across the UK to implement the ‘Scatter’ directive, a plan to relocate aircraft at various satellite airfields to disperse them away from the main airfield and possible German attack. This meant that many squadrons were spread over several airfields for short periods of time until the immediate threat, or perceived threat, had subsided. This was first seen at RAF Barton Bendish (a satellite of Marham) when Wellingtons of 115 Sqn located at nearby RAF Marham were placed here. With no cover, the protection RAF Barton Bendish offered seemed small in comparison to the main airfield at RAF Marham.

The openness and cold of RAF Barton Bendish has been noted in several scripts, and this caused problems in the winter months when starting cold engines. ‘Johnnie’ Johnson recalls in Martin Bowman’s book ''The Wellington Bomber'' how they had to start the Wellington’s engine by getting it to backfire into the carburettor thus igniting unspent fuel in the air intake. This was then allowed to burn for a few seconds warming the carburettor allowing the engine to start. careful timing was paramount, the danger being that the aircraft could catch fire if you were not cautious !

In the early part of WWII RAF Barton Bendish Airfield was also used as a 'Decoy Site' a flare path being lit at night to attract enemy bombers away from RAF Marham a few miles down the road, how effective this was, is not known, but it may well have saved one or two lives at the main airfield.

Also during 1941, 26 Squadron (RAF) flying Tomahawk IIs were stationed here for three days from the 27th – 30th September, as was 268 Squadron on several other occasions. Also flying Tomahawk IIs, they passed through here during May 1941, then again between the 21st and 25th June 1941, 28th and 30th September 1941 and then again on the 25th and 26th October 1941, 268 Sqn who were then based at RAF Snailwell, used the airfield as ‘the enemy’ in a station defence exercise, whereby they would perform mock attacks on RAF Snailwell using gas, parachute and low flying strafing attacks methods. Being little more than a field, RAF Barton Bendish provided no accommodation for the visitors, and so the aircrews slept in tents overnight, these being removed the next day after the attacks had been made.

By 1942, the Stirling Bomber was becoming a predominant feature at RAF Marham, and with RAF Barton Bendish being too small for its required take off distance, RAF Downham Market became the preferred satellite airfield, RAF Barton Bendish being sidelined for other minor uses.

Little exists about its existence or purpose other than a few mentions in the operational record books of these squadrons, or recordings in the writings of RAF Marham personnel. Rumours state a ‘huge military (HQ) bunker’ and hard standings, but these are more likely farmer’s concrete pads, abundant across the area. No physical buildings were ever thought to have been built, the only extant remains are two Type-22 Pillboxes, the airfield is listed as a satellite or landing ground of the parent airfield RAF Marham. No other signs seem to exist of the airfield. Another case of an airfield completely disappearing !

Gunnera Tinctoria / Chilean Rhubarb

Gunnera tinctoria, known as giant rhubarb,[2] Chilean rhubarb, or nalca, is a flowering plant species native to southern Chile and neighboring zones in Argentina. It is unrelated to rhubarb, as the two plants belong to different orders, but looks similar from a distance and has similar culinary uses. It is a large-leaved perennial plant that grows to more than two metres tall. It has been introduced to many parts of the world as an ornamental plant. In some countries, such as New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Ireland, it has spread from gardens and is becoming an introduced species of concern. It is known under the synonyms: Gunnera chilensis Lam. and Gunnera scabra Ruiz & Pav.

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1782 by Juan Ignacio Molina as Panke tinctoria,[1][3] and was transferred to the genus Gunnera in 1805 by Charles-François Brisseau de Mirbel.[4][5]

Description

Gunnera tinctoria is a giant, clump-forming herbaceous perennial. The leaves can grow up to 2.5 m across, cordate and palmate with up to 9-lobed margins.[6] The stems are covered in numerous spikes. It has erect spikes of cone-shaped inflorescences (to 1 m) from spring to early summer, with small flowers. The fruit is orange. The number of seeds is estimated from 80,000 per seedhead to 250,000 per plant.

Habitat

Stream and roadsides.[6]

Uses

In its native Chile, where it is called nalca or pangue, it is used in a similar way to European rhubarb: after peeling, the stalks are eaten fresh or cooked into jam or cordial.[7] The leaves are used in the preparation of the traditional Chilean dish curanto. The roots are also traditionally used to tan leather and as a black dye. [8]

As an invasive species

In parts of New Zealand, Chilean rhubarb has become a recognised pest plant; in Taranaki, on the western coast of North Island, it has spread to riparian zones and riverbeds, coastal cliffs and forest margins,[9] thus placing the species on the National Pest Plant Accord. Under Section 52 and 53 of the Biosecurity Act, it is an offence in New Zealand to knowingly propagate, distribute, spread, sell or otherwise offer for possession.[10] In Great Britain, the species was popular amongst gardeners for decades, but became rather well-established, and sometimes problematic, in western districts, and appeared to be spreading.[11] In the west of Ireland, G. tinctoria is a major invasive species,[12] in particular on Achill Island and on the Corraun Peninsula, County Mayo. Its large leaves create dense shade, preventing other species from germinating or growing.

Chilean rhubarb is classified in the European Union as an invasive species of Union concern, and it is illegal to import, grow, or sell it within the EU.[13]

In the United Kingdom, the plant was classified under Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as an invasive species. While it remained legal to cultivate privately, it was made illegal to allow the species to spread outside the bounds of one's property, or to deliberately sow it elsewhere.[14]

Similar species

A similar species is Gunnera manicata (Brazilian giant rhubarb). This species may also be invasive.
