I am extremely pleased by the arrival of these pre-orders from Buckie Model Centre. BMC last year commissioned a number of 1/76 scale, Plaxton Panorama, double decker coach models. Following a successful first run, they added additional livery options. I immediately pre-ordered the Stagecoach & Citylink 900 options, although only one of each (I believe each has 3 destination options).

Yesterday saw the arrival of YX18 LKO (50405) Stagecoach Western in corporate all over yellow livery, on X76 to Kilmarnock, and YX69 LBU (50417) Scottish Citylink in 900 service branding, and on the 900 for Edinburgh via Baillieston.

Now these models have joined the collection, I have taken the opportunity to share pictures of them and my other Panoramas, those which joined by fleet last year. These are; YX69 LCA, “Aberdeen Angus” - Megabus, on M9 for Aberdeen via Dundee. YX21 NNO, Scottish Citylink in 6 Cities branding and on M10 to Glasgow. LSK 873, Citylink Gold in Gold livery and on M9 to Aberdeen.

This is The Old Crown at 188 High Street, Deritend, an inn, the oldest building left in Birmingham.

It is Grade II* listed. It claims to date back to 1368, retaining its "black and white" timber frame, although most of the buildings date from the 16th century. It is believed it was constructed between 1450 and 1500, with some evidence dating back to 1492 (the same year the Saracen's Head in Kings Norton was completed).

In 1538 someone called Leyland noted that it was a Mansion House of Timber.

Skermishes were fought nearby during the English Civil War when Prince Rupert's forces invaded Birmingham.

The building was converted into two houses in 1684, and into three in 1693. It remained three houses into the 19th century.

In 1851 the Old Crown was saved from demolition by Joshua Toulmin Smith, and again in 1856 and 1862, by the corporation, and Smith saved it each time.

All the first floor windows date from the 19th century.

The Old Crown Inn was built in the late 15th century by the Guild of St John the Baptist of Deritend, one of the two guilds in Birmingham, religious orders to which only the town's richest citizens could belong. Such guilds flourished as a link between the church and secular society, and as well as spiritual support provided members with a form of social security and welfare benefit. This building was originally the Guildhall, where members of the guild met and prayed, and was also a school for the children of the guild members. The Guildhall was timber-built, infilled with wattle and daub, and the original ground floor contains a large meeting hall and smaller master's room. The building was turned into an inn in the 19th century, and has recently been restored.

Yesterday I went to the post office to ship these and two other orders of eye chips.... Now normally (any other time of year) this errand would take me anywhere from 5-15 minutes but yesterday was a different story....

First of all, there are twice as many people in this town as the town that I moved from, yet there is only one post office for this entire town... The town I moved from, with half as many people, had 4 post offices.... So I've never had to deal with the December/Christmas chaos at the post office quite like this before...

To make a long story short, it took me an hour and a half to mail these 3 orders of eye chips. O.O

Merry Christmas.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is answerable to no one. They are above the law. You are guilty if they say you are. If they want to seize your property, they will. Court orders and/or court judgements against you are not necessary.

————————————————————————————————————————

In September 2006, the IRS started to outsource the collection of taxpayers debts to private debt collection agencies. Opponents to this change note that the IRS will be handing over personal information to these debt collection agencies, who are being paid between 22% and 24% of the amount collected. Opponents are also worried about the agencies' being paid on percent collected because it will encourage the collectors to use pressure tactics to collect the maximum amount. IRS spokesman Terry Lemons responds to these critics saying the new system "is a sound, balanced program that respects taxpayers' rights and taxpayer privacy." Other state and local agencies also use private collection agencies.

————————————————————————————————————————

If you want to be a "Tax Protester" you might want to read an interesting article by Daniel B. Evans: The Tax Protester FAQ.

He starts out, "The purpose of this FAQ is to provide concise, authoritative rebuttals to nonsense about the U.S. tax system that is frequently posted on web sites scattered throughout the Internet, by a variety of fanatics, idiots, charlatans, and dupes, frequently referred to by the courts as 'tax protesters.'"

————————————————————————————————————————

The IRS, and in particular the IRS Criminal Investigation Division (IRS CID), has on more than one occasion been accused of abusive behavior. Statements given in hearings before the Senate Finance Committee criticize the IRS:

"[D]oes the IRS correct abuses when they become aware of them? Oftentimes, they do. However, the more important question is, does the IRS cover up occurrences of abuse? The answer is, yes! If the true number of incidences of taxpayer abuse were ever known, the public would be appalled. If the public also ever knew the number of abuses "covered up" by the IRS, there could be a tax revolt."

Congress passed the Taxpayer Bill of Rights III on July 22, 1998, which shifted the burden of proof from the taxpayer to the IRS in certain limited situations. The IRS retains the legal authority to enforce liens and seize assets without obtaining judgment in court. [Emphasis mine.]

Michael Minns was the defense lawyer in a case against the IRS on behalf of James and Pamela Moran after an initial indictment and what Minns asserts was an IRS smear campaign that virtually canvassed the taxpayers' own hometown and surrounding area. The original indictment was associated with the Morans' involvement with a tax shelter provider, Anderson's Ark & Associates. The Morans were eventually acquitted in the case.

Minns also had previously asserted that the behavior of two IRS attorneys, Kenneth McWade and William A. Sims, constituted legal misconduct and recommended them for disbarment. Following an investigation, the law licenses of the IRS attorneys were duly suspended for a two-year period after a federal court ruling found that the two had indeed defrauded the courts in connection with 1,300 tax shelter cases. In 2003, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit concluded that the IRS lawyers had corruptly agreed with certain taxpayers that no tax collection actions would be taken against them — in return for testimony against other taxpayers. The court also asked why the IRS had not punished the two. [Emphasis mine.]

Moments from an evening with the Noodle Master, at GB Hand-Pulled Noodles on Edward St in Toronto.

"The original village [of Oradour] was destroyed on 10 June 1944, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built after the war on a nearby site but on the orders of the then French president, Charles de Gaulle, the original has been maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.

"In February 1944, 2nd SS Panzer Division ("Das Reich") was stationed in the Southern French town of Valence-d'Agen, north of Toulouse, waiting to be resupplied with new equipment and freshly trained troops. After the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the division was ordered to make its way across the country to stop the Allied advance. One of the division's units was the 4th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment ("Der Führer"). Its staff included SS-Standartenführer Sylvester Stadler as regimental commander, SS-Sturmbannführer Adolf Diekmann as commander of the regiment's 1st Battalion and SS-Sturmbannführer Otto Weidinger, who was designated Stadler's successor as regimental commander and was with the regiment for familiarisation purposes. Command of "Der Führer" passed from Stadler to Weidinger on 14 June.

"Early on the morning of 10 June 1944, Diekmann informed Weidinger at regimental headquarters that he had been approached by two members of the Milice; a paramilitary force belonging to the Vichy Regime. They claimed that a Waffen-SS officer was being held by the Resistance in Oradour-sur-Vayres, a nearby village. The captured German was alleged to be SS-Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe, commander of the 2nd SS Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion (another unit of the "Das Reich" division), who may have been captured by the Maquis du Limousin the day before.

"On 10 June, Diekmann's battalion sealed off Oradour-sur-Glane, having confused it with nearby Oradour-sur-Vayres, and ordered all the townspeople – and anyone who happened to be in or near the town – to assemble in the village square, ostensibly to have their identity papers examined. In addition to the residents of the village, the SS also apprehended six people who did not live there but had the misfortune to be riding their bikes through the village when the Germans arrived.

All the women and children were locked in the church while the village was looted. Meanwhile, the men were led to six barns and sheds where machine guns were already in place.

"According to the account of a survivor, the soldiers began shooting at them, aiming for their legs so that they would die slowly. Once the victims were no longer able to move, the soldiers covered their bodies with fuel and set the barns on fire. Only six men escaped; one of them was later seen walking down a road heading for the cemetery and was shot dead. In all, 190 men perished.

"The soldiers proceeded to the church and placed an incendiary device there. After it was ignited, women and children tried to escape through the doors and windows of the church, but they were met with machine-gun fire. A total of 247 women and 205 children died in the carnage. Only 47-year-old Marguerite Rouffanche survived. She slid out by a rear sacristy window, followed by a young woman and child. All three were shot; Marguerite Rouffanche was wounded and her companions were killed. She crawled to some pea bushes behind the church, where she remained hidden overnight until she was rescued the following morning. Another group of about twenty villagers had fled Oradour-sur-Glane as soon as the soldiers had appeared. That night, the village was partially razed.

"A few days later, survivors were allowed to bury the dead. 642 inhabitants of Oradour-sur-Glane had been murdered in a matter of hours. Adolf Diekmann claimed that the episode was a just retaliation for partisan activity in nearby Tulle and the kidnapping of Helmut Kämpfe."

Forest Haven Asylum - Laurel, MD

This abandoned hospital once catered to children and adolescents with developmental disabilities, and became notorious in the public eye for neglect and abuse toward the residents. Newspaper articles detail ex-employees tales of children without soap, clean clothes, sheets and even food; there were claims that some co-workers would beat the patients. They wrote how the foul smell of urine and feces constantly lingered in the air, and described many residents wearing diapers and banging their heads against the walls for attention. A report was also published that a deaf woman, admitted in 1930, had been kept inside the hospital for 55 years, being misdiagnosed as "mentally retarded."

Some residents spent much of their lives in adult-sized cribs, and left to live in private-care homes when the institution closed; others left through the small morgue to be buried in an unmarked field, which reputedly washes away from a nearby creek occasionally exposing graves Whether this report is simply media sensationalism or the truth is unknown.

A federal lawsuit was filed in 1978, ordering the institution to improve conditions, and yet another was placed in the late 1980s - this class action lawsuit involved 74 residents. The hospital finally shut down in 1991, due to "dangerous conditions." Much of the campus is now used as a drug rehabilitation facility, which resembles a prison in many ways (razor wire, marked and unmarked police vehicles, etc).

A memorial plaque outside one of the buildings reads, "While yet I live, Let me not live in vain."

This lot contains jewelry for artep_dinkum and Land of Dolls. I'll send you a message privately.

My mom was helping me pack pins. It makes me wonder, how much time I spend on these things.. with my mom's help, I probably saved an hour. Who knew that so many people would get so many pins.

So a bunch of my Amazon orders came in lol. I really wanted the 2016 Holiday Barbie with the Claudette sculpt and she was $15, I knew if I waited any longer she’s going to go for bonkers prices later on.

I figured I pick up another doll or two to save on shipping so I grabbed a Batman doll to steal his body, and picked up this Henry Higgins doll cuz I’ve been wanting a brown suit but they’ve all been $30+ and Henry here was $23 so.

Claudette’s dress is BIG though it sheds glitter and literally feels like a tent due to the plastic fabric. I actually really liked Model Muse bodies cuz the solid vinyl legs and dynamic poses make them good candidates for modeling clothing and photography, but this one? It’s AWFUL. The legs are hollow plastic and there’s messy seams everywhere so it’s basically garbage.

Batman is a weird one but I have no issues with him asides from his head looking like a burping potato and ALL his accessories are super soft vinyl, so I can’t imagine these surviving very well.

Henry Higgin’s suit is a Jacket and combination shirt and pants thing but… I miss this level of quality from Mattel. The fabric is hemmed, the jacket is fully lined and it just feels so much better than either of these other dolls lol. However his shoe did explode off and the box is degrading a lot so yeah.

The Greyhound, Cambridge

Denver, 18 March 1978

In March 1978, I finished Air Force Tech School at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas.

My orders said that I was "authorized" "commercial air" or "commercial surface" transportation. I called up my Air National Guard unit and asked them if I could use "commercial surface" to get home from Wichita Falls to Sacramento. They said it was OK with them, so instead of getting an air ticket, my friend Herbie, who was permanent party and had a car, drove me to the Wichita Falls Continental Trailways station the night that tech school ended and I caught a bus for Denver.

We were overnight to Amarillo (Amarillo by Morning is an old country song) and then spent the day going north through the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle, then through eastern Colorado. We went through Boise City, Oklahoma and Limon, Colorado, that i remember, and a look at a map says we must have been on US 287 all the way from Wichita Falls to Denver. I didn't get any train photos out the bus window. I remember seeing an ATSF train going south somewhere around Boise City and remember crossing other rail lines, but if I saw other trains in addition to the Santa Fe one, I don't remember them.

I had a lot of luggage as I was moving back home after 9 months away with all my Air Force uniforms as well as civilian clothes, so I got a cab from the bus station to the Oxford Hotel, a block from Union Station. I'd stayed at the Oxford in 1975, when I was in town for a UP 8444 special and remember the room costing $8 per night in 1975...the room was probably more expensive in 1978, but the Oxford had not yet been refurbished into the classic luxury hotel it was in 1991 when my wife and I stayed there.

After dropping my bags, I headed to Union Station and then the rail yards that used to be behind Union Station. The whole area has changed beyond recognition today, but in 1978, the area around the station was still Skid Row and behind the station were train yards. Tracks in Union Station still went through, and freights would sometimes come through on platform tracks.

With only Amtrak's SF Zephyr, the Rio Grande Zephyr and the Ski Train, Union Station was not nearly as busy as it had been even 10 years earlier when we came through on the CZ

I wandered around the yards in the late afternoon light, taking advantage of the fact that nobody seemed to care that I guy with a camea was in areas that would be off limits today. I even went into the BN roundhouse for a quick photo. UP had a DD35 in town, as well as other long vanished models.

SCL 501 was parked in the station, looking rather out of place, far from the Atlantic coast. The Nebraska Zephyr articluated set that it had been coupled to in 1975 was gone, but it was coupled to an observation car.

Shortly before the light faded, a swticher brought a couple of cars, including a dome, to be added to the SF Zephyr for the trip to Chicago. My final shot was of the Ski Train equipment parked in Union Station.

Of the photos I've taken here, the only one that could be replicated today is the view down 17th St, of the station. , and at that, the street looks a lot better today.

The class Heterobasidiomycetes or jelly fungi is a paraphyletic group of several fungal orders: Tremellales, Auriculariales, Dacrymycetales. These fungi are so named because their foliose to irregularly branched fruiting body is, or appears to be, the consistency of jelly. Actually, many are somewhat rubbery and gelatinous. When dried, jelly fungi become hard and shriveled; when exposed to water, they return to their original form.

A number of the jelly fungi can be eaten raw; poisonous jelly fungi are rare. However, many species have an unpalatable texture or taste. They may or may not be sought in mushroom hunting due to their taste, which is described as similar to that of soil. However, some species, Tremella fuciformis for example, are not only edible but prized for use in soup and vegetable dishes.

Jelly fungi make rubbery, seaweed-like mushrooms. They are colored white, orange, pink, rose, brown or black. The mushrooms are shapeless, shaped like cups, railroad spikes or branched like coral. The common name of yellow to orange species is witches butter.

Jelly fungi are really different than other mushrooms. The basidia (spore-making cells) of most mushrooms are a single, club-like cell. They are found on ridges or lining tubes under the mushroom cap. The basidia of jelly fungi either have walls or are forked. They are located on the upper surface, not the lower surface.

The only species grown and sold in stores is clouds ear or woods ear (Auricularia auricula). It is used in soup. Some people like the slippery, crunchy texture.

Jelly fungi often grow on logs, stumps and twigs. Some species are parasitic on other fungi, mosses, ferns or seed plants. The best time to find them is in the fall or in the spring below melting snow banks. Their rubbery flesh may protect them from drying out and against freezing. They shrink when the air is dry and then swell up again when it rains. It may be why they are found in the spring and fall when other mushrooms are not.

Tremella mesenterica (common names include the yellow brain, the golden jelly fungus, the yellow trembler, and witches' butter) is a common jelly fungus in the Tremellaceae family of the Agaricomycotina. It is most frequently found on dead but attached and on recently fallen branches, especially of angiosperms, as a parasite of wood decay fungi in the genus Peniophora.

The gelatinous, orange-yellow fruit body of the fungus, which can grow up to 7.5 cm (3.0 in) diameter, has a convoluted or lobed surface that is greasy or slimy when damp. It grows in crevices in bark, appearing during rainy weather. Within a few days after rain it dries into a thin film or shriveled mass capable of reviving after subsequent rain. This fungus occurs widely in broadleaf and mixed forests and is widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions that include Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America. Although considered bland and flavorless, the fungus is edible. Tremella mesenterica produces carbohydrates that are attracting research interest because of their various biological activities.
