Weedon Island Preserve - St Petersburg, FL

A Spinybacked orbweaver, (Gasteracantha cancriformis) which is also called a Crablike spiny orbweaver and locally often referred to as the clownfaced orbweaver. Common in the southern United States, especially Florida, as well as the Caribbean, it is an invasive species in Hawaii. Gasteracantha cancriformis is the only known species of its genus found in the New World with many species of the same genus found in the Old World.

Found during a night hike in kanuku mountains. For a greater selection of photos which include different angles and species ask by pm to be added to my friend's list.

Yesterday the tire flew off my minibus, I cut the head off a pit viper and I was banned from a commercial flight by associating with a narco-trafficker. Today I am bushwhacking through the jungle in the remote trail-less backwaters of Guyana, waist deep in water and praying to make it through the rest of the day alive. What will tomorrow bring? God only knows. The adventure starts here- pbertner.wordpress.com/.

Found this beauty on flowering sage brush here in the heart of the Forgotten Corner. Not as pink as her Saskatchewan cousin but beautiful just the same

Family: Araneidae. Species: Micrathena gracilis (Walckenaer, 1805). Male. (Salem, MA)

I found this guy on my morning hike to Bear Lake down at Flamingo in Everglades National Park. He was backlit and swaying with the slight breeze...so I had a lot of bad images before something was finally sharp! I remember first seeing these amazing spiders as a boy scout visiting the Florida Keys. I'm still fascinated!

One of the more exquisite spiders....

Orchard orbweavers (Leucauge venusta) are a common species from Southern Canada to Panama. Sometimes the patterning is dull or absent.

Spotted Orbweaver (a.k.a. Redfemured Spotted Orbweaver; Neoscona domiciliorum) - Duke Island Road, Tiger Bay State Forest, Volusia County, Florida

The red femers made this ID easy.

And I also have to be thankful for the droplets on the web,

which was the only thing that kept me form taking it in the face.

These marbled orb weavers just hatched on my patio a few days ago.

The orb-weaver spiders include over 10,000 species and make up about 25% of spider diversity. They build a new web each day after consuming the old web before they the new one.

Love my camera. This was shot into the light through dirty double glazed windows

Here's something you don't see everyday.

Araneus alboventris

The Orchard Orbweavers are back in force . . . one of the most colorful little spiders around. Post two today. Thanks for Viewing.

Found this little (not really that little) guy/gal weaving its web on my back porch the other night. Sometimes mother nature delivers even if it's a bit creepy. The detail on the zoom is amazing and this is not the high res image. This was identified as an Orb Weaver spider.

We were leaving Estero Llano Grande State Park in South Texas just after dark, when the family in front of us spotted this orbweaver that had dropped down in the middle of the path. Eric was able to tell them all about her, and it was a cool teaching moment. Really cool, big spider too!
