From a recent shoot in an abandoned bomb store somewhere under Wales, I don't always nail orbs like this....

These spiders were abundant in my parents gardens in QLD Australia. They are the most common group of builders of spiral wheel-shaped webs often found in gardens, fields and forests. "Orb" was previously used in English to mean "circular", hence the English name of the group. They are non venomous.

Another shot of an Orb weaver spider. The weld mesh steel behind is 50mm square. Gives some idea of the size of the spider.

Compositionally Challenged Week #11

I took up orb photography a few years ago...it is one of my favourite types of my photography. It's difficult to keep it from getting repetitive so that's a challenge in itself.

The before and after of the life of a Golden Orb Weaver Spider.

I found this female Golden Orb Weaver and her egg sacs in a dead bush at our outback camp. Orb weavers usually mate in Autum. The female sometimes eats the male after mating.

This spider had three egg sacs approximately 3cm round. Each sac contains hundreds of eggs. The silk she uses for her egg sac is strong, yellow, and curly. Baby spiders are called spiderling. The baby spiders hatch within a couple of weeks, but remain inside their egg sac until winter is over. Once the tiny spiders emerge from their egg sac in early spring, they make small webs near their birthplace, or disperse on the wind, attached to short lengths of silk.

I thought I was going to get skunked this year and not be able to get any good shots of spiders. Well, it took to late Summer to finally see a few of them so I am making quick work in photographing them.

Hate them or love them, they are still fascinating insects.

This Golden Orb Weaver spider is getting larger by the day as he catches (and digests) other insects in a massive web in our front garden.

I've come to the conclusion that my resident golden orb lives upside down. I never see her any other way.

An orb on Mount Hood. Chris Renfro spins an orb while I man the cameras. :)

As seen in California. I believe Labyrinthine Orb Weaver (Metepeira labyrinthia). Please correct, if this identification is in error.) Thanks for viewing!

An Orb-weaver Spider with its prey on its web in Mud Creek Park Nov. 1.

Cape Town, South Africa

this species has a rather unique eye arrangement like no other.

Even stranger, is its long snout. A very unusual feature indeed.

Perhaps it tells lies and suffer the same fate as Pinocchio.

All these extraordinary characteristics only come to light when this guy is examined under magnification.

I would not have noticed this guy if I have not caught it shifting location. This guy moves in a very unique manner sliding along the thread it has spin. It's the unusual fluid movement that caught my attention.

The surprise came when I was viewing the images on the monitor. The facial feature and eye arrangement (araneidae sp) is unlike anything I've seen before. Could its tiny size indicates that it's an immature ? since orb-web spiders are usually relatively larger. Hope someone could shed light on this critter

This Orb Weaver Spider is very busy attending to her egg sacs.

A small copper orb created with a bit of wire from a spool. The spool is half inch wide. I like the criss cross pattern on the spool in contrast with the circular pattern of the loose wire. I've used the water on mirror again for a bit of bokeh.

Blick in die Altstadt von Bad Orb.

Just one from being out alone the other night. This is just after I discovered I had no auto focus. Next stop delivering my camera to Nikon I hope its covered.

Usually, Golden Orb Weavers will let you get really close, but this one was skittish and would scurry away as I approached, so I had to use the long lens to get a shot of him. Not as sharp as would have liked, but OK.

Have a good start to your week!!

Star Trail over the Abandoned Bridgetown Railway Station with added orbs :-)

My wife found this big Orb Weaver spider in our basement. She has had an intense lifelong fear of spiders. Over the years I have gradually gotten her to feel comfortable not only letting spiders live but even leaving them in our house. This Orb Weaver was just too big for her comfort though, which I can completely understand. She is very tolerant of my love for spiders and rarely complains. I decided to use some flowers that we had and grab a couple photos before I relocated this big, beautiful girl.

Running out of names for Photos

My glass orb was delivered from China today...there is a technique to using one for photography...one I'll need to learn.
