Any business turns to a service provider basically and primarily to save time, in which Optometry Billing Services providers are no different. Most eye-care practices may fall prey for overhead costs due to internal resources and inefficient optometry medical billing. Whether you consider outsourcing your optometry billing or not, these factors/benefits will help you decide if you are making a right move.

"Modern and Distinctive Tourist Accolodations

Leahy Tourist Home, 1256 Union Avenue

U. S. 70-64, Memphis, Tennessee

-

Travelers Inn System"

Building long gone and site is near where the Southern College of Optometry is today.

Maybe that's Mr. or Mrs. Leahy standing on the front porch in the photo. Looks like a man with a pipe or cigar in his mouth but hard to tell for sure.

Info about this 1256 Union location being started as the Leahy Tourist Home around 1936 in this obit excerpt for Mrs. Edna Leahy:

Edna Summers Leahy (1896-1966): www.findagrave.com/memorial/133603598/edna-leahy

"Mrs. Edna Leahy, wife of motel and trailer park owner A.T. Leahy, died at 2:30 yesterday afternoon, October 21, at Methodist Hospital after a short illness. She was 70.

Mrs. Leahy was born in Dyer, TN and had lived in Memphis for 40 years. She and her husband started in the trailer-motel business 30 years ago at 1256 Union. In 1955 they sold it and bought Leahy's Motel and Trailer Park at 3070 Summer Ave.

She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Ida Dell Stratton of 1091 Peach; and three grandchildren."

Arthur T. Leahy (1886-1971; born in New York state):

www.findagrave.com/memorial/133603730/arthur-t-leahy

A 1943 city directory lists A.T. and Edna Leahy as the proprietors of this Leahy Tourist Home location at 1256 Union. The then-future location of Leahy's Tourist Court at 3070 Summer Avenue is listed as the address of Oak Lodge Hotel & Cottages, operated by Chas H. Tenent (spouse: Bessie). Looks like Dr. Charles Hubbard Tenent (wife at the time: Bessie L. Harris Tenent) passed in 1948 of cardiac failure at the age of 70 so maybe that was a part of how the Leahys became the next operators of the 3070 Summer Ave. hotel and lodges/cabins location.

Charles Hubbard Tenent (1877-1948): www.findagrave.com/memorial/30827833/charles-h-tenent

Bessie L. Harris Tenent (1880-1974): www.findagrave.com/memorial/30827826/bessie-l-tenent

1936 directory lists 3070 Summer Ave. as Oak Lodge Night Club. Some directories between 1936 and 1943 also list Charles H. Tenent as residing at 3070 Summer with an oculist office at 52 S. Main and having a spouse named Margaret R. Tenent. But a Mrs. Bessie Tenent is also listed at a different address, 3588 Southern Ave. There's a 1935 marriage record for Charles H. Tenent (age 50) and Margaret Upton Read (age 49). That doesn't match up either. Between the 1941 and 1942 directories, Margaret is replaced by a Bessie as listed spouse of Charles H. Tenent at 3070 Summer Ave. and Dr. Tenent stops listing his occupation as oculist. I don't know what was up or how it all worked out. Oak Lodge Night Club changed to Oak Lodge Hotel & Cottages between 1939 and 1940.

Later edit: A bit more: Margaret Read Tenent (1882-1941; wife of Dr. C.H. Tenent; born in New Jersey) passed in 1941 of lung cancer www.findagrave.com/memorial/30827843/margaret-tenent

1935 directory: No Charles, Margaret or Bessie but son Edgar H Tenent (Alice) is listed. 3070 Summer Ave listed as vacant.

1929-1934 directories: No Tenents; 3070 Summer Ave listed as vacant.

1927-1928 directory: Edgar H Tenent (Alice) chemist r2404 Autumn Ave; no other related Tenents

1926 directory: CH Tenent (Bessie) h980 Faxon Ave; Eva H Tenent stenographer h980 Faxon Ave; Edgar H Tenent (Alice) chemist h2436 Autumn Ave

1925 directory: Edgar H Tenent chemist r2404 Autumn Ave.; Eva M. Tenent stenographer r2404 Autumn Ave.; no listing of Charles

1924 directory: Charles H Tenent physician 980 Faxon Ave.; Eva M Tenent stenographer at 980 Faxon Ave.; no Edgar listed. Maybe Eva Mae Tenent was Charles' sister?

1923 directory: Charles H Tenent physician 78 S Main 2d Fl r 980 Faxon av; Edgar H Tenent chemist r 980 Faxon av; Eva M Tenent stenographer r 980 Faxon av

1922 directory: Charles H Tenent optometrist Goodman & Bach r 980 Faxon ave; Edgar H Tenent chemist r 980 Faxon ave; Eva Mae Tenent stenographer r 980 Faxon ave.

1921 directory: Charles H Tenent optometrist Mulford Jewelry Co h 980 Faxon ave; Edgar H Tenent chemist Barrow Agee Labs h 980 Faxon ave

1920 directory: No Tenents

The Idaho and Nevada National Guards conducted two weeklong medical visits to Tribal members from the Nez Perce and the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes, May 13-24, 2024, through a community healthcare partnership program called Operation Nimiipuu Health. Approximately 50 citizen-Soldiers and Airmen provided behavioral health, medical, dental and optometry services to the Nez Perce Tribe's local citizens at Lapwai, Idaho, and the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes at the Duck Valley Reservation in Nevada. The program is part of Idaho National Guard’s Innovative Readiness Training, a U.S. Department of Defense-driven, Office of Secretary of Defense Reserve Affairs-sponsored, Army National Guard-led and multi-service training event for service members to work in our communities while performing deployment readiness tasks, creating a win-win for both Soldiers and Airmen and the communities.
