Why This Photo Is Meaningful to Me: I met this beautiful girl, Lady Baltimore, in Juneau, Alaska at the Mt. Roberts Raptor Center. This lovely symbol of the United States was abused. She was shot by a hunter and received a broken wing and was blinded in one eye. She was rescued by the Raptor Center and is now part of the educational exhibit. Despite her challenges, she is a gorgeous, majestic bird. Her head tilt indicates curiosity, optimism, and a welcome for visitors of all ages. Most importantly, she represents the reasons why I am an animal advocate. Violence against animals should be taken far more seriously. To deprive an animal of one of her major life activities (flying) is reprehensible! My hope is that she will inspire many more to take action and treat animals with the respect that they deserve!
