Semi-cactus Dahlia 'Smooth Operator' with the background of dense shade in the yard. The lighter petal tips are not (I think) typical of this cultivar. I'm guessing that these tips are due to the bright sun and hot conditions that this Dahlia has endured.

The shots with the kukri were the biggest surprise for me. This was brought out at the very end of the shoot when I was done with all the lighting setup ideas I had brought coming into this. After a few test shots with the key lighting, I had my trusty assistant pickup a snooted flash and just go at it from different angles on the other side of the key. I gave the model no direction except where to stand. We were all tired and just improvising at this point.
