This reenactment is showing the fights around Budapest in 1945, when the Germans tried to stop the Red Army advancing against the city and relieve the encircled garrison with three "Konrad" operations (this year itś the second operation, and the Germans won). In this time the Red Army units in the area have already been exhausted and the Germans were able to slow them, but not to stop, and finally Budapest fell on 13 February 1945.

Melanie McMillan documents Wal-Mart's carelessness as part of Operation Teal, a website and senior thesis project launched after observing an unsettling amount of discarded Wal-Mart bags near a store in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This observation led to an inquiry about the number of discarded bags at other Wal-Mart locations and what relevance it has to the number of years a store has been in operation.

This project sets out to provide evidence that Wal-Mart Supercenters are a detriment to the communities in which they appear and the impact of the teal shopping bags is a function of population density.

PIC: Soliers from the Light Dragoons Battlegroup take a well earned rest in a compound during Operation Panchai Palang.

Phase three of Operation Panther’s claw was initiated today Friday 3rd July 2009 by the Light Dragoons Battlegroup. Known in Pashtu as Panchai Palang, it is hoped that the operation will clear and secure the Malgir and Babaji areas of insurgents in order to set the conditions for the forthcoming elections in August.

Over 700 British soldiers are involved in the Battlegroup operation, intimately supported by 300 personnel from the Afghan National Security Force. This is the main focus of Operation Herrick 10 and as such will be backed up by over 80 armoured vehicles, Close Air Support (in the form of fixed wing and attack helicopters), Artillery and the latest intelligence and surveillance assets.

The Battlegroup consists of soldiers predominately from The Light Dragoons and The 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment, who have worked closely together previously on Operation Herrick 6 in 2007. The Battlegroup has already achieved success when they recently handed over the now thriving and prosperous Garmsir District to the American 2nd Battalion 8th Marine Regiment. This handover to the Americans has allowed the Battlegroup to focus its efforts on Panchai Palang as the Task Force’ main effort.

Commanding Officer of the Light Dragoons Battlegroup, Lieutenant Colonel Gus Fair DSO, said “We’ve enjoyed witnessing great progress in Garmsir District and now look forward to similar success in Malgir and Babaji”.

Although the next few weeks will be the most demanding and testing time for all involved on this tour to date, the intense preparation and planning that all the troops have endured, has ensured that everyone in the Battlegroup are fully focussed and ready for whatever lies ahead.

Scimitar Armoured vehicle commander, Sergeant Keith Bell, Light Dragoons said “Our vehicles and equipment are in great condition, and the boys have had time to recharge

The Battle of Kursk (July and August 1943).

Greater Manchester Police’s Operation Protector ran again last week providing security for the 2011 Conservative Party Conference, which was held at Manchester International Conference Centre.

Operation Protector is one of the Force’s largest undertakings and sees officers and staff from across the organisation deployed in the city. The operation is structured to ensure the security of the conference while still maintaining day-to-day policing continues as normal across the region.

This was the fifth occasion the Force has mounted Operation Protector during a major political conference in the city. The operation will run again next year when the Labour Party host their conference in Manchester.
