For the first time ever we have seen today the first spotted dolphins from the season so earlier in the year!!! the curious thing is about 100 meters outside of this school of dolphins were two Sei whales!lol so something is strange here,tropical dolphins with baleen whales in the same litle area? only in the south coast off Pico my friends :-P

On this day, Shawn Miller and I went out looking for pygmy seahorse. On the way out i noticed this thready creature moving on a reef segment. It is clearly a tiny sea dragon. This photo coincided with the plankton spawn, so a recently hatched pipefish makes sense. Lovely young specimen in any case.

After going about 12 miles straight out into the open ocean off the southern tip of Baja, our group of 7 divers dove down to 110 to 120 feet beneath the waves on the first of 2 "blue water" deep dives. This was my first experience diving in the deep blue ocean with no visible bottom and a lot of water above and below me. Our goal was to encounter Hammerhead sharks and other pelagic fish species. In this shot my dive buddy, Barbara, shows how we were weightlessly suspended in the deep blue void - Gordo Banks, Sea of Cortez, B.C.S., Mexico

A sole humpback whale ventured in close to us while we were anchored on the bank. She/he made a few long slow laps around the boats fishing in the area, surfacing occasionally, and then making deep dives, displaying her beautiful, black and white patterned fluke. The fluke is like a fingerprint for humpbacks. I could probably look this one up and get her name.

A sleeping adult Dusky Parrotfish (Scarus niger) sleeping. Sleeping parrotfish protect themselves from predators by creating a mucous bubble to sleep in. It keeps their delicious fishy odor out of the water so no predators come to eat them. They don't have eyelids, so they can't close their eyes. This fish was sleeping, and I was able to get a nice close shot without waking him up.

Saw this micronudibranch under a rocky overhang on the seawall. It was not longer than 2cm. Loved the benefit of the teleconverter with this specimen.
The second photo I am posting of this specimen. It was quite small and at an odd angle. With the 200mm equivalent lens, I had a hard time framing it and avoiding damaging the reef. This is cropped andthe colors were manipulated in Lightroom.

My son snapped this shot of me as I ran into the waves to cool off. It was a perfect beach day, and because we take the time and effort to walk a ways from the entrance, we get this nice elbow room.
It almost looks like I'm racing to catch the passing lobster boat!
