New Omicron Subvariant Is 'Crazy Infectious,' COVID Expert Warns
Ralph Ellis
January 10, 2023
.
The newest subvariant of Omicron, XBB.1.5, is so transmissible that everybody is at risk of catching it, even if they've already been infected and are fully vaccinated, a health expert told USA Today.
"It's crazy infectious," said Paula Cannon, PhD., a virologist at the University of Southern California. "All the things that have protected you for the past couple of years, I don't think are going to protect you against this new crop of variants."
XBB.1.5 is spreading quickly in the United States. It accounted for 27.6% of cases in the country last week, up from about 1% of cases at one point in December, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's especially prevalent in the Northeast, now accounting for more than 70% of the cases in that region.
It's spreading across the globe, too. Maria Van Kerkhove, PhD., technical lead of the World Health Organization, has called XBB.1.5 is "the most transmissible subvariant that has been detected yet."
Ashish Jha, MD, the White House COVID-19 response coordinator, tweeted a few days ago that the spread of XBB.1.5 is "stunning" but cautioned that it's unclear if the symptoms of infection will be more severe than for previous variants.
"Whether we'll have an XBB.1.5 wave (and if yes, how big) will depend on many factors including immunity of the population, people's actions, etc.," he tweeted.
He urged people to get up to date on their boosters, wear a snug-fitting mask, and avoid crowded indoor spaces. He noted that people who haven't been infected recently or haven't gotten the bivalent booster likely have little protection against infection.
The symptoms for XBB.1.5 appear to be the same as for other versions of COVID-19. However, it's less common for people infected with XBB.1.5 to report losing their sense of taste and smell, USA Today reported.

As the predicted Omicron Covid outbreak in December 2021 was about to go rogue the Perrotett NSW government removed most restrictions. Public and business backlash saw the NSW Government quickly reinstate some of the previously existing restrictions, like mask wearing in public spaces. Common sense was sadly lacking because the initial relaxation made no sense at all yet was hardly surprising given the abominable manner in which the NSW Government handled the Ruby Princess debacle as well as the June 2020 Bondi Junction outbreak.
At the same time as Omicron was arriving on the scene support services for contact tracing and PCR testing were being wound back and the Federal Government said they would not fund subsidization of Rapid Antigen tests (RAT) probably because they did not want to undercut their donors, among them Chemist Warehouse and Harvey Norman. Electrical goods and furniture retailer Harvey Norman, was very likely tipped off as to the government's intended policy, or indeed they lobbied for it, and immediately ordered many thousands of the Rapid Antigen tests which are now being sold. At the time of writing (5.1.21) online ordering of RAT tests via Chemist Warehouse yielded a nil result with tests out of stock as is the case, as I write, with most pharmacies and supermarkets. Some of those commercial sales outlets with stock have been guilty of price gouging with prices as high as $40 for a single test. The tests actually cost under $4 each to produce and the manufacturers say they can produce 15 million tests in a day.
The current dire shortage of tests is a legacy of callous and indifferent, if not incompetent management, by the Federal Government who failed to heed warnings issued by the Australian Medical Association in September 2020 that RAT tests would be an essential tool in managing the predicted tsunami of infections to occur from January 2022. Most health experts are of the belief that the Federal Government should be making the RAT tests free as a means to help minimize the impacts of the predicted explosion in cases of Omicron covid.

Around 74% of the current NSW Covid ICU cases are of the Delta variant indicating that since Perrotett removed most restrictions before Xmas 2021 Delta has become rampant in the community. The situation is made much worse because the government has stopped tracking infections and our political leaders are selling the message that Omicron is the problem and it's less virulent, deflecting from the impacts of Delta which for now is much more problematic.
We have here a massive case of political failure to protect the Australian people. One could only imagine what would have happened if condoms had been made so ridiculously expensive during the AIDS crisis from 1981 onwards.
Chaos is increasingly the state of play in the NSW health system as hospitals begin to struggle with a lack of staff and rising Covid admissions which are detrimentally impacting on the opportunity for other urgent life-threatening procedures. Health workers are even being pressured by hospital administrators to come back to work even though they have Covid 19.
On the 5th Jan 2022 NSW recorded 35,054 cases a day but this is not an accurate assessment as it has become very difficult to be tested if an individual feels they have been exposed or have symptoms. The actual infection figures are likely to be up to 10 times higher according to some experts. People, some with Covid symptoms, are lining up at testing centres for up to 7 hours to get tested. It should come as no surprise that many just give up waiting. Drive through queuing is of a similar wait time. Many testing laboratories have become overwhelmed and understaffed due to some staff becoming infected with covid rendering them unable to work. For these reasons the labs are unable to return test results in a timely manner. Some tests results appear to be taking 4-7 days to be returned and there are almost no RAT tests available to buy anywhere in NSW.
The shambolic mismanagement by the Perrotett and Morrison Governments is there for all to see. Both governments, imbued with a business first ideology (or should that read donors first) are of the mindset to 'let it rip' and this ideologically driven approach has seen the virus escalate its intrusion into all other states of Australia, despite their best efforts to keep it at bay.
The failure to manage this health crisis appropriately is not only impacting people's lives and health but in fact doing immense damage to the bottom line of many businesses as well as the economy.
It might seem like I am stating the obvious when I say it's very unwise to catch covid yet many people appear to be confident in their trust in the effectiveness of triple dose vaccination. Hopefully this trust is proven to be correct in the coming months.
From my own limited observations, it appears some people out there on the streets are naively unconcerned about the risks to their own, or their family's well-being, believing they will catch covid, Delta or Omicron, eventually and that they'll survive it.
If Seal Rocks was any example on Boxing Day 2021 there are plenty of people in that category. I've never seen so many cars lining every road, occupying every parking space and indeed many illegal ones. It was 'wall to wall' people, like I'd never seen before.
Despite these crowds my solitary walk through the rainforest brought me out at the southern end of Number 1 Beach from where I took this shot. Most people had located themselves on the beach further north from this point while many had returned to their cars for lunch. To be fair though it was clear that many people were social distancing from strangers but not necessarily in their family groups.
As we enter 2022 the game is changing rapidly, the 'let it rip brigade' appear to have won the war, for now, at least in NSW.
It has been reported that Omicron may well be more infectious but the jury is still out as to whether it's as potent as Delta. Even if Omicron turns out to be less potent the sheer growth in Omicron infections to come may yet result in significant growth in ICU admissions and potentially, in more deaths.
With many children going back to school in a few weeks not having had their 2nd jab, let alone their boosters it appears 2022 is going to be one big game of Russian Roulette.
The ship is rudderless so good luck folks.

“Yesterday, we received orders from the Emperor himself to proceed to the enemy base of Valkan, a large naval base were a large convoy with almost 100 cargo ships was being prepared to depart, with a few escort ships. Our small battle group, one Kalstin aircraft carrier (with 70 Stealth Thanatos Fighters), two anti-ship Destroyers of the Dana class and three Omicron’s nuclear attack submarines represented an impressive surface battle group.
We entered a small fiord near the enemy base and we started to prepare to launch the Fighters when suddenly, 120 enemy Striker fighters appeared in the sky. Immediately we launched all the fighters to intercept, while the Kalstin and the Dana’s started to fire AA missiles. Unfortunately, we couldn’t use the main guns or the Walstons CIWS, because our shells could hit our own fighters.
In the end, we shoot down 45 enemy Striker fighters while the others fled, all without a single aircraft loss on our side. Since the enemies on the Convoys knew that we where near, we launched immediately our air strike, with the help of the D.D.N. anti-ship missiles fired by the two Dana’s Destroyers and the Omicron’s submarines, guided to the target by two naval helicopters.
The mission was a complete success, since we only received a little damage on our ships and we sunk or crippled at least 87 cargo-ships.”

About the ship
In 2009, I started the construction of a 1,5meters LEGO aircraft carrier based on the Russian Kuznestov aircraft carrier, which I named “Project Kalstin”. Unfortunately, I never completed the ship since at the time I lacked hundreds of reddish brown tiles necessary to complete the aircraft runway.
The incomplete hull of the ship was later modified into the 2,8meters Battlecruiser Gualdim Pais.

But I always wanted to have a picture of the Kalstin in action. And finally, here it is! XD

We’re easily sidetracked, it appears. One half of id-iom had ventured out into the cold to scrape and blank out our previous wall as the weather was just about sunny enough. After an hour or so out there I head out to see how he’s getting on and rather than paint over the previous wall he’d decided to adapt it into something else entirely. Then I got involved. Then it got dark and we had to come back the next day to finish what we were doing. And it’s still not ready to be painted on again. Like I said, easily sidetracked.
Anyway, if at first glance you thought this was 90’s cartoon legend Johnny Bravo then you’d be very much mistaken. For this is his second cousin twice removed Johnny Omicron. He’s twice as chatty but half as much fun. Now he’s got to go. The wall will be blanked out…

Might as well do one more description: keep in mind this pic of the pharmacy waiting area was taken prior to the Omicron (Should that word even be capitalized? Doesn't deserve that kind of respect!) variant freak-out, and this same area 3-4 weeks later might be overrun with people infecting each other :P Will this pandemic ever end!? (Let's hope so, maybe after mid-term elections in November...)
Also, remember not to say *anything* (whatsoever) negative about vaccines on Twitter, your account there might get suspended in the blink of an eye! (Odd, methinks...)

As Australia descends into Omicron chaos our Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has learnt nothing about the realities of a pandemic. As the Guardian says "Morrison also urged people not to focus on case numbers." But that was the whole reason the various levels of Government had to step up with testing, tracing, vaccination, restrictions and financial support! Because the sheer numbers in a pandemic overwhelm normal systems. Supply chains, services, health care, aged care and many other economic activities. They are all deeply impacted by soaring case numbers at every level of people's lives and deaths! From a few days ago, no one actually knows the numbers as the testing system has broken down under the pressure. RAT's anyone?

This is the bright blue reflection nebula complex, IC 348, in Perseus, amid a region of dark and faintly glowing clouds of interstellar dust. The bright star above the nebulosity is Omicron Persei. The loose star cluster in the bright reflection nebulosity is also labeled IC 348. The dark nebulas in the area were catalogued by E.E. Barnard as B3 (at right), B4 (bottom) and B5 (top left).
This is a stack of 18 x 8-minute exposures (= 2h20m) through the Askar APO120 refractor at f/7 with the 1X Flattener, and with the filter-modified Canon R camera at ISO 1600. No filter was employed here.
Taken from home on November 10, 2023. High clouds moving in prevented more exposures. Autoguided with the MGEN III guider on the AP Mach 1 mount. Applications of luminosity masks from Lumenzia, a PhotoKemi Nebula Filter action, and a Detail Extractor filter from the Nik Collection 6 Color EFX (the latter two applied to a starless layer created with RC-Astro Star XTerminator) brought out the faint background nebulosity and dark nebulas in this dusty region of sky.
As Omicron returns us to further hesitance to leave the house, and snow every day makes it more difficult, we're on our own lockdown.
We both had our Covid-19 booster jabs yesterday.
First two jabs were Astrazenica but this booster was Moderna. Apparently that's been found to be the best mix (so far) against this latest (much more transmissible/infectious) Omicron variant.
Let's hope that's it then.
These enlarging lenses may have different names, but they all come from the same manufacturer: Tomioka Optical. They're branded as "Osawa Tominon EL", "Hoya Super EL", "Bogen" or "Omicron-EL" and they come in focal lengths of 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, 75 mm, 90 mm, 105 mm and 135 mm, though not all brands are available in all focal lengths.
Shot with a "Bogen WA 60 mm F 4" enlarging lens (the twin brother of the Tominon 60 mm...) on a Canon EOS R5.
With Omicron crashing over us at the moment, I’ll be looking back yet again.
My hope is this will wash over most of us and drain away quickly or at least by February and we will be free to get back to things again.
Our case rate here is larger than ever in the pandemic, and hospital rates are up too, but not by as much and so far, our death rate has not shot up again.
But again, most who are getting it and ending up in the hospital are the ones that are still unvaccinated here.
My hope is after this wave passes, we will have had most of the population vaccinated or at least now recovered and the case rate will drop back down again like late spring last year.
We can hope.
(We have over 80% of our entire population fully vaccinated, so your results may vary.)

The following is not official advice and mask wearing is not mandatory anymore in airport terminals or during the flight:
My MO is to still wear a mask in the terminal and also during the flight. Becoming infected with the 'Covid' virus may not be 'inevitable' if people take some additional precautions in addition to the recommended vaccinations. Some people still get quite ill despite being fully vaccinated and it is not a pleasant infection to have.

Health authorities on Thursday [17 November] recommended that NSW residents wear masks indoors and on public transport if social distancing wasn’t available as “it gives you and any vulnerable people who may be near you an extra layer of protection”.

Today, Sydney welcomed about 800 COVID-positive passengers, either asymptomatic, or mildly symptomatic, disembarking from the Majestic Princess. Apparently, passengers were asked not to take public transport to their destination, and ALL were masked.
www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/cruise-ship-with-hundreds-of-...
And here is the rant (I am not a medic!):
How things have changed since the arrival of the Ruby Princess in 2020 when the whole pandemic started for 'us' and we were tested, sick, isolated, hospitalized, some dying, vaccinated, masked, businesses and schools closed, the pandemic debated on TV, restrictions for public gatherings put in place with threat of fines.
And then, in NSW, there was Gladys o'clock, epidemiologists, health ministers, other officials and trusted other health experts drumming the seriousness of this virus into us ... And now, with the fourth wave looming, or here, all but gone out the window ...
I don't understand what mildly symptomatic means;
Mildly spreading, mildly infectious,, mildly sick, high/low virus load, or what? Must be some kind of newspeak again when one doesn't want to admit the infection rate is out of control and people are left to their own resources (called self-empowerment), to make the 'right' decision, with 'right' meaning different things to different people. Though, it appears the situation is 'serious' enough to suggest to passengers not to take public transport, which makes sense.
Since a bus terminal, a train station, as well as a ferry terminal, are right 'next door' to the cruise liner terminal, parking at the Opera House is quite expensive, and parking at other places in the city is usually packed with day-trippers, and others, there just maybe the temptation, once out of sight of officials, to catch public transport anyway.
People, whatever you do, if ill with COVID, even mildly ill, mildly symptomatic, please be responsible, isolate, and don't infect others. Fully vaccinated people can also get ill, infect others and, as explained below, less seriously ill may be serious for vulnerable and immunocompromised people.
And, keep wearing that mask, just in case.

Well, I'll keep wearing mine ... Not interested in finding out whether or not vaccination is working and keeping me safe (whatever that may mean...). 'You' and I don't want to get sick, not even 'mildly sick'.
Long COVID appears to be affecting also those fully vaccinated sick people - whatever that current definition of 'fully vaccinated' may be. So, to me, lifting mask mandates is just another experiment and I don't want to be part of it, nor do I want to rely on 'antivirals'.

Australia had the benefit of hindsight and experiences of other countries, has a high fully vaccinated population and yet, something has gone terribly wrong and positive cases are increasing rapidly. Supermarket shelves still bare due to too many people reporting in covid positive and staying home. Will isolation time be further reduced in order to get the potentially sick to stack shelves? Most people now fully vaccinated, more and more tested, politicians talking gobbledygook, and the numbers are increasing. There must be something else at play. Ok, the solution appears to be to vaccinate all children. And if that doesn't work to bring the numbers down, make sure all household cats and dogs are vaccinated.
I love the idea of getting fined when not reporting positive RAT results to authority. RAT kits are still as rare as hens' teeth, and if they are available they are so expensive that you don't want to buy them anyhow.
Our Premier Perrottet admitted fines would be difficult to enforce. Duh 😂
It's not nauseating anymore. Perrottet o'clock is now the amusement of the day.
I won't be rushing out trying to get a RAT kit. I really don't know why, when asymptomatic, people would want to find out whether or not they are positive. It just adds to unnecessary expense and fear.
And, how does one responsibly dispose of all these used RAT kits?

Good Lord! What happened? 'We' dropped back to position 46!
In NSW, RAT kit figures won't be taken into account until 12 January. Whether people will report RAT results remains to be seen. Also, there are already reports that positive tests may be counted twice. So, figures don't reflect the real situation anymore. Hooray for politicians who may be used to playing with figures and shifting goal posts to make figures and reports look better.

Should we expect nurses to pay $50.00 a day for parking for the privilege to look after Covid and other sick patients?

Leadership has been failing us and now it is 'Personal responsibility'. First, we were bombarded with rates of deaths until we were scared enough to get vaccinated. Now, we get sick despite being vaccinated and told to treat at home with Panadol and Nurofen and not go to ED. Problem: Panadol and Nurofen sold out due to panic buying.
My wish: Just, please, Please, PLEASE - TAKE PREMIER PERROTTET OFF AIR! I want to watch the news, just without that man. Even a few seconds of him opening his mouth are nauseating.

The situation is well and truly out of control, more and more responsibility shifted to maybe noncomplying and increasingly confused people, being asked to test with unavailable RAT kits, ring overworked, also confused GP's for advice, and stay away from EDs unless really sick, which may be a matter of interpretation. Imho, the mess started with NSW's Premier trying to be smarter than anyone else, 'opening up' and 'letting it rip'. Listening to his rant on TV is nauseating. Instead of boosting the economy, it has slowed it down with an increasingly sick workforce which now is being ordered back to work earlier than previously and getting even more people infected. Australia had plenty of time to watch other countries and now we are heading in the same direction. Sick, hospitals under pressure, and listening to politicians' gobbledygook. Oh yes, on top of that, we now have the stuff up with Novak Djokovic. Embarrassing.

Latest news: Those with positive RAT's do not have to present for a PCR test anymore, which means, these positive cases will not be counted in the National tally anymore, which means, our figures will be skewed and look better than they really are.
Shifting goal posts, changing the way of counting and testing, etc. that's what our Governments are doing well.
About the RATs: Provided one can get them. They are as rare as hens' teeth. And yet, we are being told to do a test if one is feeling unwell and not ring the ambulance.

As our PM said: It's not a race! Though, we are keen to get closer to the world leaders. Shortage of N95 mask, requirements to do a RAT test despite kits sold out everywhere, PCR testing centres closed due to labs not coping anymore, told not to go to ED and watch 'symptoms' at home.

Interestingly, on the odd occasion, politicians quote Israel, which is in position 34, with about 884 deaths/1 mio. as a good example to follow. I don't quite get it ...

Asymptomatic health care workers can now be ordered back to work after 5 days isolation. This, despite asymptomatic people still being able to transmit the virus. The relatively low hospital admissions are pretty irrelevant, as it needs medical staff to monitor the sick at home by telephone consultation. Moral of the story: Try not to get sick because there may not be enough staff to monitor thousands of sick people!

Booster debacle due date:
Fed. Government advice letter received 20.12.21: 6 months
NSW Health: 5 months wanting to bring it forward to 4 months.
NSW Premier Perrottet, as well as Health Minister Brad Hazard, “We’re all going to get Omicron”, appearing not too concerned about the rising numbers as long as the economy is going well.
Mid 2021, Australia was in position 144/224 with only about 1,000 deaths/26 mio. population.
The tally below of the dramatic increase in cases is mainly due to the new NSW Premier, Dominique Perrottet, deciding to ‘open up’ the most populated state, on 15 December, for the sake of the economy, Christmas cheers for labs making lots of money, the business community in general, and hospitals with overworked and underpaid nurses, most of whom are women.
