Vienna's luxury shopping street Kohlmarkt one week before Christmas Eve. The fourth wave of coronavirus with the Delta variant is subsiding and the incidence figures are visibly falling. But experts are predicting a next wave of unimagined proportions because of the new variant Omicron. We have to expect it from January, they say.
100,000 infections a day, 75,000 deaths by April.
Do you remember how the Army built the Nightingale Hospitals to cater with tens of thousands of deaths a day? Do you remember queuing in the rain in a queue stretching across the car park and round the back of the supermarket to get..........toilet rolls? Do you remember doing your bit to flatten the curve? Do you remember the fear? Wasn't that back in 2019?
So where are we now, in 2021? Everyone is/was thinking of having a 'normal' Christmas. And we have only two more Covid variants to Christmas , some joke!
But first, will we get there without Santa Boris demanding one more effort before the big party. And before the gift of Covid passports, and mandatory jabs. Or you lose your job, or the freedom to go to a pub, cinema, a park.... a shop? Like Austria where the Government will fine you EUR 1000 every month until you comply?
I'm writing my letter to Santa. Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas this year is my freedom from all this shit and madness. Whatever is going on, I want it to stop. Enough is enough!
Covid. It should be so passe.... so last year.
The darkened gloomy sky is a negative influence over the orchard trees that are trying to put a happy twist on the holiday season.......much like the Omicron Variant of Co-vid is putting a supreme damper on our Christmas season.
After a recent bout with the Omicron variant and a pretty nasty case of food poisoning, I can now continue to reveal the competing images from the 2021 Sandwich Fair Competition.
These images continue the series from the Sandwich Fair, the biggest and the last county fair in the state of Illinois. Known simply as "The Fair" by locals, it was started in 1888 and is the oldest continually-operated county fair in Illinois as well.
Held the week after Labor Day, the Sandwich Fair can draw tens of thousands of visitors per day and is a photographer's delight.
It is the reason why my photography club, the Sandwich Photographic Society exists. Formed in 1986 to document every aspect of the 100th Sandwich Fair in 1987, SPS is now a Chicago Area Camera Club Association certified club.
SPS sponsors a "Sandwich Fair Challenge" every year a themed photographic competition open to all that consists of 10-15 categories with the only criteria being that all images need to be taken at the current year's Fair. Many of the images featured in this series were taken to fit these categories.
This image is the of the "1001 Nachts" ride, an Arabian Nights themed spinning ride. The rides are always fun to try with varying long exposures. Sometimes you get interesting results, like this as the arm goes from end to end.

I got into what felt like a bar fight with COVID-19 Omicron; it took me two months to beat it, even with the vaccine.

The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 and a single SB700 speedlights. The SB900s were placed CL, slightly in front, and CR, slightly behind the model. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄4 power (CL) and 1⁄32 power (CR) through Neewer 24" soft boxes. The SB700 was placed on the floor behind and CR with the diffuser panel deployed. It was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄2 power.
The SB900s were triggered by PocketWizard Plus Xs; the SB700 was in SU-4 mode and triggered by the other flashes.

Mask up - stop the spread. Preventing or limiting spread of an airborne virus is not rocket science. Cover your mouth and nose with a suitable mask in enclosed public spaces.
While this should have been the case already in the UK, during this period of accepting 1000 deaths per week, it is most definitely the case now with the unknown risk that the Omicron variant presents.
Better to over-react protectively and relax later than to become overwhelmed by not reacting enough. Stay safe everyone. This is not just about life and death, this is also about long-term debilitating disease, the burden of which will be enormous before this is all through.
When the Omicron variant of COVID-19 emerged this fall, governments across East and Southeast Asia returned to a tried-and-true strategy to stop it: They doubled down on border restrictions. Japan banned entry for nearly all foreigners—including students who had already been admitted to universities.

As Omicron continues to rage in Ontario, I am trying to stay away from people as much as possible but need to get out of the house and what better way to enjoy the day is to visit the deers, they can quickly take your mind off everything else going on in the world.

“Ever since the fifth wave broke out, and in light of a potential lockdown, more than 80 per cent of our clients have expressed heightened worries and anxiety,” said Jimmy Wan, director and counsellor of Breathe Counselling.
He added that some clients suffered from health anxiety and their fears of catching Covid-19 had led them to conduct more self-testing or assume the worst if they noticed changes in their body. (20220309 SCMP)
Sente? Sente? A mão sobre a câmera lembrando-me a primeira vez, a arrebatadora vez que me entreguei à fotografia. Sente, sente agora? Pois aqui sinto tanto cada imagem finda como se nela visse outras tantas. Sente que sinto assim?

Omicron is tapping at our door. It seems to be raging in Australia but our border security is just holding it at present. I am double vaccinated but going for the booster shot today. My good wife had it yesterday with no ill effects.
The staircase is a Georgian hanging stair that supports itself for 3 floors of the castle. In the distance a girl in sand shoes descends to the basement exit on a different straight stair. Just my holding a camera seemed to make her rush down 4 stories. Was she worried I would put her on social media or something?

This image is of Horse Barn 1. Built in 1914, it no longer houses horses, as horses are no longer shown for competition during the Fair. All horses for horse-based competitions and shows now come in the day of the event and stay around the horse show arena. I believe this ceased to be a horse barn sometime in the 1990s. It now houses chickens. The former chicken barn is now the maintenance barn.
On a side note, the amount of chickens on display in 2021 is less than half what is normally is in previous years, no doubt a side effect of the ongoing pandemic.

We are NOT "post-pandemic" or "post-Covid" and I am sick of hearing this from main stream media, politicians and prominent businesses.
First, we cannot unilaterally declare that a pandemic is over due to the very nature of a pandemic.
Second, just looking at the month of JUNE to date, we have 10X the number of directly attributed Covid hospitalisations for 2022 than we did for the same period in 2021 or 2020.
Hospitalisations are rising 30-40% week on week at the moment. Why? We're facing a wave of Omicron BA.5 which is even more infectious than previous Omicron variants but, worryingly, doctors are reporting that it is infecting lower down into lung tissue as we saw with the Alpha wave. Secondary pneumonia is now a major issue again and hospitalisations are rising across ALL age groups. Omicron evades vaccine immunity and there is NO natural immunity to Omicron. People are being re-infected with Omicron with repeated infections reported as being worse and worse.
Ignoring the acute risks of Covid, of which there are many, there are now multiple wide ranging and conclusive studies by institutions such as Harvard that are showing that every single Covid infection, no matter how 'mild', is causing permanent internal damage.
Damage to the brain similar to that in Parkinson's Disease.
Damage to the pancreas causing onset of Diabetes.
Damage to lung tissue.
Damage to the gastrointestinal tract.
Damage to cardiovascular endothelium and clotting factors resulting in a 3X increased risk in heart attacks, strokes and pulmonary emboli for at least 6 months post-acute infection.
More importantly, it is causing degradation of your immunity. SARS2 causes reduction in your immunity and damage to T-cells similar to that of HIV, leaving you wide open to opportunistic infections that you would be unable to fight.
SARS2 infection prematurely ages you! Telomeres are the end protections of our chromosomes that you can think of as being similar to the end plastic pieces of a shoelace. These gradually degrade over our lifetimes as part of the ageing process. It is a known quantity and studies have shown that even mild infections of Covid are causing damage to the telomeres of our chromosomes equivalent to 10 years of biological ageing.
Early in the Covid story some people openly called it 'airborne AIDS' because some of the genetic code of the virus is identical to HIV. It may have been tongue-in-cheek at the time but Covid is causing this kind of damage.
Ask yourself why we have rising infectious diseases such as viral hepatitis in children, monkeypox and polio to name a few. We have a massive population with post-Covid immune deficiency.
Even the Bank of England has reported that we are facing a collapse of economy with increasing rates of 'long Covid' affecting the workforce.
All of this information is easy to find in peer reviewed medial journals at revered institutions such as Harvard or in The Lancet. SARS2, as it's predecessor SARS, is a multi-system disease spread by microscopic airborne aerosols.
Keep yourself safe because your government does not care about you.
Protection is not rocket science. Mask in poorly ventilated places and when indoors with an FFP2/3 well fitting mask. Open windows for ventilation and demand that workplaces and public facilities install suitable HEPA filtration. Washing your hands helps against many diseases but it will not stop you from catching Covid.
Hong Kong’s care homes for the elderly managed to weather successive waves of Covid-19 infections over the past two years. Then the fifth wave hit and things fell apart rapidly.
The highly transmissible Omicron variant of the coronavirus tore through the homes from early last month, leaving about 11,000 residents infected and at least 680 dead as of Saturday. About 3,100 staff were also infected.
Overall, 589 care homes for the elderly – three in four of all such facilities in Hong Kong – have recorded Covid-19 infections.
Medical experts and operators of the homes blamed not only the speed with which Omicron spread, but also the low vaccination rate among their residents, already vulnerable because of their advanced age and underlying health issues.
“The infection and death rate of the elderly residents in care homes will keep rising, unless isolation and vaccination are implemented promptly,” said Dr Leung Chi-chiu, an expert in respiratory disease and public health.
“Omicron, the particularly low vaccination rate among residents and the unsuitable environment of care homes for on-site quarantine have led to where we are today.”
Infectious diseases expert Professor Yuen Kwok-yung estimated that only 20 to 30 per cent of care home residents remained uninfected, and expected the death rate among them to remain high.
With the city recording tens of thousands of new infections daily, the shortage of hospital beds and quarantine facilities has left many infected elderly people confined to care homes without proper isolation facilities, causing the virus to spread among residents. (20220306 SCMP)
A framing of the major areas of bright and dark nebulosity in Cygnus, showing pink emission nebulas contrasting with dark dusty regions in the Cygnus arm of the Milky Way. The main area of the bright Cygnus Starcloud is at upper right.
The bright blue star Deneb is above centre. Just below it and left of centre is the North America Nebula, NGC 7000, and its adjacent companion Pelican Nebula, IC 5070. The Gamma Cygni nebulosity complex, IC 1318, is right of centre. The Veil Nebula supernova remnant, NGC 6960 and 6992-5, is at lower right. The small Cocoon Nebula, IC 5146, is at lower left. The Tulip Nebula, Sh2-101, is at upper right.
Two obvious star clusters flank the scene: NGC 7209 in the lower left corner, and NGC 6940 in the lower right corner. The dark nebula Le Gentil 3, aka the Funnel Cloud Nebula, is at upper left. The dark Northern Coal Sack area is at centre. At top is the colourful "Patriotic Triple" stars of Omicron 1 and 2 Cygni.
This is a stack of 8 x 4-minute exposures with the Canon RF28-70mm lens at 70mm and f/2.8, on the Canon EOS Ra camera at ISO 1600. The lens was equipped with the 95mm URTH Night light pollution rejecton filter to help enhance the nebulosity. I shot this from home August 5, 2022 on a very fine dark transparent night with the field straight overhead. The camera was on the Star Adventurer Mini tracker. I rejected about half the frames and used only the best 8 that had no trailing. That was enough to average out the satellites that appeared on some frames.
All stacking and processing done in Photoshop. Curves and color grading applied in part using luminosity masks generated with TK8 Actions and Lumenzia. A mild Orton glow effect added with Luminar AI.
An atempt to expand my comfort zone, turned out fairly good. The design is heavily influenced by the works of Milo Z. and Ironsniper's Desert Suit.
