About half of Hong Kong’s 7.4 million people have already been infected with Covid-19, according to an estimate of the damage caused by the deadly omicron wave that’s overwhelmed the city.
Researchers at the University of Hong Kong determined that about 3.6 million Hong Kongers caught the disease through March 14. That’s up from an estimated 1.8 million infections they concluded had developed through March 7 based on disease modeling and an in-depth analysis of the ongoing outbreak.
While the current wave peaked on March 4, many more people will catch Covid before it ends, the researchers said. The total is likely to reach about 4.5 million, they said.
More than 5,100 people will die from Covid by May 1, the researchers forecast, up from an earlier estimate of about 5,010.
Elderly residents of care homes account for 59% of total deaths, they said.
Hong Kong confirmed more than 27,700 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, while 13 private hospitals pledged to reserve a total of 1,000 beds mostly for non-Covid patients to help ease the pressure on the public health care system.
A total of 15,809 cases were logged through a new online government portal by residents using at-home rapid antigen tests, in addition to 11,956 confirmed through polymerase chain reaction screenings, bringing the daily total to 27,765. Hong Kong's overall Covid-19 tally stood at 761,550.

Competing with nearby deep sky attractions like the California Nebula or the Pleiades star cluster, the region around Omicron Persei unfortunately does not get the attention it truly deserves. Only a deep exposure reveals the vast amounts of dust and gas that are in the process of gravitational collapse, forming new stellar objects. While many protostars are still hidden within their dusty enclosure, a young star cluster - IC 348 - has already emerged. Also standing out from the background of reddish hydrogen gas is Barnard 3, a prominent dark nebula discovered by Edward Barnard in the early 20th century.
Stack of 110 exposures at f/5.5 totalling approximately 8 hours.
Taken during 4 nights in Sptember, October and November 2021 in rural Upper Austria with a QHY600C-PH and a Skywatcher Espirt 100 at 550mm focal length. Tracking with Skywatcher EQ6-R, autoguiding with MGEN-3. Processed with Astro Pixel Proxessor, Starnet++ and Photoshop.

January 8th peak weak shower 2:45 am
From American Meteor Society "On 2015 January 10 at 02h50m UT, radar and video data showed an outburst of the κ-Cancrids (793 KCA; radiant at α = 138◦, δ = +9◦) at λ⊙ = 289 .◦315. Activity from this source was also found in the 2016 data of the IMO Video Network and data of the SonotaCo network find the shower annually over the past decade around January 10. There are hints that the KCA event of 2015 may have been an enhancement of the o-Leonids (515 OLE). Both are in the working list of the IAU MDC and require more data. The outburst position of the 2015 activity is reached on 2025 January 9 near 16h UT. At this time, the radiant of the Antihelion source centre is located at α = 122◦, δ = +19◦, which is roughly 20◦ northeast of the KCA radiant; KCA meteors (V∞ = 47 km/s) are faster than those from the ANT (V∞ = 30 km/s)."

In a secluded sector of the Milky Way galaxy there is a Classic Space station named Omicron Base. It houses the highest command structure for Classic Space forces, and is designated LL000, as there is nothing before it in sense of size and firepower. It houses the 707th and 706th fighter wings, launched on the left and right sides above the two rotating O'Neill cylinders. (it was built before artificial gravity generators were invented, but they were later installed in places of non-movement aboard the station) The solar panels are supplemented by a fusion generator or two, located at the extreme end of the spine, furthest away from the inhabited sectors. The station has no propulsion, and is locked in orbit of the second moon of the the desert planet of Bara Magna, Bota Magna. (which is a uninhabited, primeval jungle world)

Thanks to him, I have a new Classic Space model on the horizon. (Oh and the smaller ship is from Dimensions - specifically the Benny fun pack. It represents Benny's cruiser I have built in minifig scale.)
OMICRON
darunter 13 CORVID- PATIENTEN voll belegt.
EINE zusätzliche AUFNAHME von Corvid- PATIENTEN würde das KLINIKUM vor neuen Herausvorderungen stellen.

This photo will give more than a little personal reflection for me in future years.
When asked what did you do when storm Arwen hit the UK with sub zero temperatures and howling winds of over 90mph. Causing death and destruction onthe same day as the Omicron variant of cover came to the shores of the UK prompting a media frenzy and mass panic? I shall reply "I lay calmly on the floor in an airfield with 70 other people and took photos of a puddle between gusts"
In the past week a heavily mutated Covid variant has been identified, rapidly labelled a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization and named Omicron. It has been detected in countries including the UK.
It is a rapidly evolving situation. Omicron's genetic profile has raised concerns, but there's a shortage of real-world data that means nobody has the complete picture of what it can do.
The government's response is to test everyone coming in to the UK, isolate all Omicron contacts, ramp up boosting and bring back compulsory face masks in some public places.

After a recent bout with the Omicron variant and a pretty nasty case of food poisoning, I can now continue to reveal the competing images from the 2021 Sandwich Fair Competition.
These images continue the series from the Sandwich Fair, the biggest and the last county fair in the state of Illinois. Known simply as "The Fair" by locals, it was started in 1888 and is the oldest continually-operated county fair in Illinois as well.
Held the week after Labor Day, the Sandwich Fair can draw tens of thousands of visitors per day and is a photographer's delight.
It is the reason why my photography club, the Sandwich Photographic Society exists. Formed in 1986 to document every aspect of the 100th Sandwich Fair in 1987, SPS is now a Chicago Area Camera Club Association certified club.
SPS sponsors a "Sandwich Fair Challenge" every year a themed photographic competition open to all that consists of 10-15 categories with the only criteria being that all images need to be taken at the current year's Fair. Many of the images featured in this series were taken to fit these categories.
This image is of the central floral display inside the octagonal Horticulture Building. This permanent island has always been for the floral competition as far back as I can remember, while the larger perimeter display has been for fruits and vegetables.

This was a busy sky on an October night!
This was October 15, 2020 with Mars at centre just two days past its opposition, and so at its brightest, at magnitude -2.6, in Pisces.
In Cetus below, the long-period variable and red giant star Mira (which reaches its maximum brightness only every 332 days) is just past its brightest as well, making it bright enough to be easily naked eye (about magnitude 3.4 here) — it is usually too dim to see naked eye. The name Mira means the “Wonderful”, a name given by Johann Hevelius in 1662, though Mira’s variabilty was discovered in the late 1500s by David Fabricius. Mira is also catalogued as Omicron Ceti.
Also in the frame, though faint, are the outer planets Uranus in Aries and Neptune in Aquarius. Both are also near their brightest for the year as both are near opposition as well.
Some streaks from geostationary satellites are also visible south of the celestial equator in Cetus, as they flare in brightness for a few minutes near the opposition point as they reflect sunlight back from the point opposite the Sun. The geosats are streaked (even though they are stationary in the sky) because the sky is a stack of tracked exposures, with the camera on a tracker to follow the stars and capture fainter stars and the dim outer planets. Geosats flare in brightness like this only in semi-annual seasons around the equinoxes.
The sky is a stack of 4 x 2-minute tracked exposures; the ground is a stack of 4 x 2-minute untracked exposures to keep it sharp, with the two stacks blended and masked in Photoshop. All were at f/2.8 with the 24mm Sigma Art lens and Nikon D750 at ISO 800, and taken from home in southern Alberta. The camera was on the Star Adventurer 2i tracker. Haze and clouds moving in added the star glows. Half an hour later the sky was too cloudy to shoot this.
The continuing threat from the Omicron variant of the virus means we will need to take care and have some form of social distancing during this coming winter.
Working outside is a great way of increasing ventilation and reducing risk, however a lot of the British winter is not "crisp and bright" but more dull, cold, wet and windy. Not ideal conditions for outdoor office work. So make the most of the good days. (You need a sort of "mini shelter" over the tabletop to protect paperwork laptops and your hands). A return to traditional heavy winter coats that are actually warm and waterproof rather than just fashion items to walk to the car in, might help.
In Britain our proper winter clothing has developed on the basis that if you are outside in the winter you are either working physically or hiking. There are very few clothing lines designed for just sitting in cold windy conditions. (Motorcycle clothing must come close, motorcyclists sit for long periods in cold rainy high wind situations).
A challenge to British clothing manufacturers - - I need to be warm dry, able to move easily, keep my legs warm, it needs to be one layer not multiple layers ( try nipping inside to the loo with 5 layers on). Bright and cheerful might be nice and give me plenty of pockets as I will be a walking office, phone system, computer and stationary store. Give me some easy to reach zipped vents so that I don't melt as I trudge to the station or bus stop.
