“While all the other trees burst into life and dress up for summer, this tree stands alone, naked and Dying”-Rory Wood.
These trees may not be all that large, but they're surprisingly old. They're in the million acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, very near the area of the Ham Lake wildfire that's currently burning (May 2007).
Lee Frelich, forest ecologist with the University of Minnesota Dept. of Forest Resources, has conducted extensive research on this ecosystem. Believe it or not, he estimates these northern white-cedars to be between 500 and 1000 years old.
The main disturbances in this system are fire, wind, and insects.
Cedar is not fire resistant--its thin bark makes it vulnerable to even low-intensity fire. But these trees are on the windward side of islands, right at the water's edge. The combination of the slope position, the proximity to (cool) water, and the topography protected these trees from fire.
Their short stature makes them resistant to windthrow.
Not many insects or diseases affect northern white-cedar, and under the right conditions they can live a very long time.
I wish I had a better shot of this, but had to take what I could get passing by in a canoe.
Looking through some old photos I came across these shots of old trees in the woods close to our house. They were taken in 2006 with my old Fuji camera.
Some shots from Elspinhope Cottage, Cossarshill Farm, Ettrick Water, Selkirkshire, Scotland (CQ7W+4M Selkirk). This was a wonderful cottage we rented on a farm. Highly recommended
The Baobab Tree is also known as the tree of life, with good reason too. It is capable of providing shelter, food and water for the animal and human inhabitants of the African Savannah regions.
These lovely gnarled, twisted old trees have seen a bit of history. I must come back when they have some leaves.
One of the biggest trees in London parks. Osterley Park and House is National Trust operated park.
Beautifully maintained, the park has nice outdoor cafeteria, gift shop, local farm shop, pond and plenty of space with lots of big trees like this one.
The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is an old railroad bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. It was originally part of the Overseas Railway,
This is what's left of one of the best and oldest trees in the UK - a Monterey Cypress. I have a guide book of such trees and chose to come to Montacute House in Sommerset specifically to see and photograph it. It looked very impressive indeed from the book, and had apparantly been well looked after by the National Trust over its 150+ years. Imagine my disappointment to find it but a shadow of its former self! :((
A massive oak that started growing at the time of the Civil War. (This is version II of this photo.)
Brandnew House located nearby the school where i work.
I like the old tree on the left of the building (the only proud remains of the former landscape).
This massive tree stump sits in a historical 1860's graveyard in the grounds of NZ's oldest Stone Church - St Mary's. New Plymouth. Taranaki.
Town hall (Rathaus) in Hilter am Teutoburger Wald. The building is painted with the "Hilter Goldocker" (Hilter ocher, Goethit, ferrous oxide).
The name of the town has no relation to the well-known dictator.
