An unexpected treat! BEST VIEWED LARGE.

 

At the edge of the small car park, locals have introduced a few bird feeders containing fat balls and peanuts. This informal feeding station provides an important food source for the small bird population and I always spent 10 minutes or so there, watching activities after I've walked my dogs.

 

Over the last two years, on an infrequent, random visit basis, I've watched Blue, Great and L.T Tits, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Dunnocks, Robins and the occasional Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding there.

Seeing this Nuthatch a few days ago, was an unexpected treat! I have never seen or heard one at the site before.

Along Downes Rd in Abbotsford, B.C. there is a nice fenced pasture with two grand trees at the top of the hill.

This is the Klootchy Creek Giant Sitka Spruce, one of the largest and oldest trees in Oregon. It's located 5 miles from the coast, near Seaside and Cannon Beach. The trunk diameter is 17 feet and has an even larger footprint.

 

The tree sprouted from a seed on the forest floor around the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215.

Yakushima Island, Kagoshima, Japan

 

Yakushima is a sub-tropical island covered in ancient rainforests and surrounded by coral reefs. Many of the trees are over 3,000 years old and some are said to be even over 7,000 years old.

This island became a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1993.

One of the things this region is famous for are these ancient Olive trees! You can find them all over Apulia, but hardly well lit, like this old fellow.

This set of images were taken in a remote park in Osceola County and is not widely known. I only saw about one third of it but you can bet I'll go back again.

Image from last month when I was doing a morning hike in the Biesbosch. Searching for some old trees I found this spot with some trees and spend some time to make this shot.

I thought I was old. But this bristlecone pine tree in White Mountains is probably a hundred times older than I am. Yeah we are talking about three to four thousand years old. Some of them even have names like Patriarch and Methuselah. For the latter, I have been told that Methuselah is the oldest living being on earth. It resides somewhere in Schulman Grove with only a handful of people knowing its exact location. That includes David Muench, a renown landscape photographer who has taken numerous photos of these ancient bristlecone pines. The one you are looking at is among the most recognizable ones that Muench has taken photos of and has been featured in numerous photography magazines. This old fellow is handsome, isn't he?

My dad built this tree house for the grandboys to play in. I don't really think they ever played in it very much. They were a little too old to enjoy it by the time it was built. My husband says he will dismantle it this summer as it is about 15 years old now. The tree isn't in great shape, either.

I was walking in Tuolumne (To All O Me) Meadows up in the high country of Yosemite National Park when this natural frame presented itself. It is hard to take a bad photo when Mother Nature sets things up so beautifully for you.

Note the granite domes in the distance. That is the main feature of the park. Yosemite had more granite than any other spot in the world.

Looking over the impoundment of the Kiswaukee river at Brookdale conservation site. The Burr Oak is quite a specimen and has survived for quite some time.

These ancient pencil pine trees can live over a thousand years. However recently genetic testing of the trees show many trees have survived even longer than the tree rings suggest. They do this by sending up new suckers forming trees as older tree trunks weather and dieback. This could potentially go on for many thousands of years.

I went out for a walk yesterday at Liberty Lake. It was a gorgeous day! I will be sad to see all of these gorgeous leaves gone soon.

Sad is this old tree that once had life and now is in the winter of it's life. Alone and forgotten but still standing tall. Rest now gently and remember the old days of green leaves and sunshine.

The Giant Sequoia is one of nature's most spectacular expressions. Found only in the Sierra Nevada of California, the Sequoia is the largest species of tree on earth growing to nearly 30 ft. in diameter at the base. It is also among the oldest living things on earth at up to 3,500 years old. If you have a chance to see them, don't miss it.
