This pair of mixed media earrings is made out of resin-ed paper in the form of an old world map, 20 and 18 gauge brass wires augmented by fire, 19 gauge annealed steel wire, hand-dyed saree, Howlite and Pyrite beads.

 

* the earrings are approx 3.5 inches in length (including earwires)

 

* the earwires are 20 gauge brass wires handformed and also augmented by fire

Un-named colliery (coal pit) highlighted. It would be interesting to know which seam(s) this mine worked - at this locality the No.3 Rhondda seam lies at a shallow depth.

 

Given the lack of transport at that time in this remote area it is probable the coal was for local consumption amongst the farms using pack mules/horses along the rough tracks.(I would have thought an adit mine into the higher No.1 & 2 Rhondda seams would have been more economic rather than a pit)

 

Any thoughts on the identity of this mine will be appreciated.

Sunk 1870 by D. Davies & Co. Ltd. Closed 1965/66.

At this time - 1875 - ventilation was by furnace at pit bottom to be replaced later with a 45ft. dia. Waddle fan. The coaling shaft was 200yds. deep and the output some 600 tons per day.

Report of 1891 :- "the two shafts are 73 yds. apart, the downcast, oval, 18' x 10' and the upcast 13' dia. both cased with bricks throughout. Steam provided by six boilers."

OS One Inch Map - the blue markers indicate the Abergavenny & Hereford tramway - horsedrawn at that time.

 

The tramway commenced at Govilon Wharf, Abergavenny, in 1814 and progressed in three sections to completion here at Hereford in September 1829 - the date of this survey.

Located near Ystrad Mynach.

The Level (arrowed) with the lower surface buildings highlighted.

The location of the adit now lies at depth directly beneath the Horse Sculpture on Penallta tip.

This mine worked the Mynyddislwyn seam beyond the Gelligaer Fault.

Also to be seen is an earlier Level & tramway to the right of this adit.
