This grove of trees was often mentioned in battle reports after The Battle of Gettysburg was over. It is a significant visual marker that helped them document and explain the movements of the armies on the fields. The book monument in front tells, on one page, of the "High Water Mark" of the incoming tide of confederate soldiers in Pickett's famous charge; and on the other page it honors those who defended the Union line and repulsed the charge on July 3, 1863.

Under one of my previous photos, you can read one description of what Pickett's Charge was like, written by someone who was there that day:

My "Gold Medal" hybrid tea rose is always the first to bloom in my rose garden every year. Now I know that spring is finally here. It looks like I will have a fine showing looking at all the buds about to burst out in the first flush of blooms.

The "Gold Medal" hybrid tea rose was first bred in 1982 in the United States by Jack Christensen, and later introduced to market by Armstrong Nursery. Jack is the youngest rose breeder to develop an All-American rose and he is credited with hybridising over eighty different types of roses. This rose was created by crossing elements from the roses Granada, Garden Party, and Yellow Pages. The result is a gorgeous yellowish rose that has rich copper accents, that ultimately fades to a soft cream color.

Spring has finally come to Melbourne after a long and grey winter, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours.

The old high street at Gravesend, Kent. Behind me and my camera is the river Thames. Very easy to imagine days gone by when the boats would dock here from London.

Yes, spring is now well and truly in the air, as winter in Melbourne fades into memory... almost... and there have been days of glorious sunshine and blue skies over the last few days.

On one such sunny, blue sky day I went for an afternoon stroll. On my stroll in the sunshine, I went past a garden of an old Edwardian bungalow which has a selection of rose bushes along their front fence, just starting to bloom, and this curvaceous beauty really caught my eye! I don't know what variety this is, but its shape and petal structure are so elegant and beautiful. This beauty, showing off her pretty pink petals has a light and sweet fragrance which I think suits this curvaceous beauty very nicely.

Melbourne has experienced a wonderful Indian summer this year, and as a result, not only are the Autumnal colours starting to appear, but there are still plenty of beautiful blooms.

This orange rose standing in the midst of a lush green garden on a walk I took last week caught my eye. I don't know what variety it is, but as the single bloom on the bush, or in the entire garden it was a delight to see.

I took an afternoon stroll in the spring sunshine today, and I noticed this wonderful pink rose bloom that had burst out with the warmer weather of the last few days in the very well maintained garden of a stylish Edwardian Arts and Crafts villa. I noticed the weather faded tag still on the trunk of this bush, so I had a look. Aptly named because of its colour, this is a "Flamingo" rose.

"Flamingo" was initially released by German Rose Breeder, Kordes in 1979, as a cut flower rose. It is one of many cut flower Hybrid Tea roses to make the transition to the garden. Called "Flamingo" as its colour matches its bird namesake, this rose was called "Margaret Thatcher" in the United Kingdom. Each stem carries one well shaped flower which lasts extremely well when cut for the vase. Each straight stem carries many plump thorns.

Flamingo is well suited to a hot dry climate and is generally free of pests and diseases. It repeat flowers regularly and is particularly strong in our summer and autumn.

Melbourne has experienced a colder and wetter than average winter this year, which is now bleeding well and truly into a wetter and greyer than average spring, however on the rare sunny days we are currently getting, the showing of flowers and blossoms is beautiful.

I took an afternoon stroll in the beautiful spring sunshine today, and I walked past this beautiful apricot rose bloom which is on a bush which is thriving in the well maintained garden of a stylish 1920s Art Deco stuccoed brick maisonette villa. She was gazing up to the bright blue skies, basking in the sunshine, waiting to be noticed. I couldn't help but do so, and I had to capture her beauty.

Yes, spring is now well and truly in the air, as winter in Melbourne fades into memory... well maybe not quite... it is supposed to be cold and raining tomorrow. All the more reason to get out in the glorious sunshine whilst it's out.

Do you believe in magic?

This beautiful rose of bright yellow, tipped with burned red edges is a High and Magic rose. With its range of colours in its stylishly structured petals it is almost looks like the hues found in a bright sunrise. Developed by the Dutch breeder B. V. Preesman, it is a hybrid tea rose with a soft and delicious fragrance.

Found in a garden whilst on a walk to visit a sick friend, it is an example of the profusion of fragrant tea roses we have seen this summer. This year's season has given us a mixed bag of weather including some hot and humid days that have brought out so many blooms, and the air is full of their perfume.

HWW all!

Summer in Melbourne was milder than predicted this year, and it seems like it is bleeding into autumn, for the weather is warming up and everywhere gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours.

I took an afternoon stroll in the late summer sunshine the other day, and I walked past this beautiful "Julia's Rose" which is thriving in the well maintained garden of a stylish 1930s Art Deco clinker brick villa. This coffee coloured rose bush is a favourite of mine, as I love the shape of the flowers as they expand into full bloom.

Introduced in 1976 by Wisbech Plant Farm in the United Kingdom, "Julia's Rose" is an unusual colour blend of coffee, lavender and pink blushes on long smooth stems. A tall open bush, this rose repeat flowers often in clusters from October to May and in cooler weather can become completely coffee-coloured.

The light at the end of the day reflected in the old glass windows at historic Lusscroft Farm in High Point State Park, New Jersey. I think this barn served as a hennery and later a bunkhouse when the farm was still active.

Outside Peoria the remnants of an old water pump and well house attempt to blend in with its newer neighbors. Fortunately,it still makes its presence known, and at least in my opinion,is the more attractive of the two.

The figure of speech "will it play in Peoria?" developed many years ago as a response to whether something will have a heartland appeal. In fact,Peoria was one of the most popular test market cities in the US for a great number of years.I'm not sure if the phrase is very popular anymore(kind of like Peoria's status as a test market city),you probably got to be over 50 to be familiar with it....

Have a great windmill Wednesday all!

I took an afternoon stroll in the spring sunshine the other day, and I walked past a rose bush I have always admired and returned to again and again. Sadly, it was hacked at by the new owners of the house, yet it seems to be springing back, and is well enough to send forth quite a profusion of blooms this year! This single bush displays roses in shades of pale yellow with pink edges, vibrant pink, carmine and orange. The former owner whom I met one day before she moved away was unsure of its origins, as it was part of the garden when she bought the property, however after I first saw it, I did some research to try and find out what it is. I think it is a Desert Peace rose. Bathed in beautiful sunshine the vibrant bloom was too beautiful not to photograph.

The “Desert Peace” rose is a hybrid tea rose with yellow blend blooms, with pink edges. It was produced by Meilland International in France in 1991.

Autumn is now well and truly with us here in Melbourne, and the cooler winds of seasonal change are blowing away the remnants of summer, like it tosses the red, gold and orange leaves that carpet the ground.

Today was an Indian summer day, an oddity between the colder rainy days. Therefore I thought I'd go for a walk and take advantage of the sunny conditions.

On my way I passed by this beautiful rose carmine coloured rose bloom, which may be amongst the last of the autumn roses. It caught my eye from across the street with its vibrant colour. It looked so beautiful in the sunlight against a backdrop of golden elm leaves

It may be cold and raining in Melbourne today, but as spring sets it, it isn't always like this, and we have had some beautifully warm days filled with sunshine and blue skies, like the day I took this photo.

On my stroll in the sunshine, I went past a garden of an old Edwardian bungalow which has these rose bushes shaped into round topiaries along their front fence, just starting to bloom, and what magnificent blooms they were too! I don't know what variety this is, but its complex petal structure and shape are so architectural and beautiful. This blushing debutante has a light fragrance which I think suits it very nicely.

Spring has finally come to Melbourne, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours after winter. It was a cold and overcast morning, but that broke up and the afternoon I took this photo, it was glorious sunshine and blue skies and I enjoyed a stroll in the warm sunshine. Along my stroll, I stopped to photograph the rose garden of a house that I have dubbed "Rose Cottage" because of their wonderful profusion of roses planted throughout their front garden. This beautiful "Alpine Sunset" bloom was standing apart from many other blooms, and was crying out to be captured within my camera's lens.

"Alpine Sunset" is an apricot blend hybrid tea rose developed by Roger Pawsey of Cants of Colchester, in Essex, in 1973. The cultivar was introduced into Great Britain in 1974. The colours of this rose are stunning as it goes from orange to pink and golden yellow - just like a painted sunset. It has extremely large buds which is quite rare for a variety that stays reasonably short. It is sweetly scented. Roger Pawsey developed the new rose variety, "Alpine Sunset" from hybrid tea roses, "Dr. A.J. Verhage" and Irish Gold (also known as "Grandpa Dickson"). "Alpine Sunset" was used to develop two child plants: '"Pretty Lady" in 1997 and '"ardley Baroque" somewhere shortly before 1997.

Once upon a time there was a widower king who had twelve beautiful daughters, each more lovely than the last, but the eldest was by far the most beautiful and intelligent of them all. They slept in twelve beds all in a row in one magnificent, gilded chamber; and when they went to bed, the doors were shut, bolted and guarded. But every morning when the locks were unbarred, the princesses’ fine satin dancing shoes, placed at the foot of their beds the night before, were worn to a ravelling with torn and tattered toes, broken louis heels and holes in their soles; as though they had been danced in all night. And yet nobody could find out how it happened, or where they had been. The princesses remained silent, but the eldest remained the most silent of them all.

The theme for "Looking Close… on Friday" for Friday 4th of April is "pair of shoes". I have many pairs of shoes, but perhaps none are more beautiful or delicate than this pair of elegant louis heeled cream satin wedding slippers from 1902, which are part of my antique costume collection. As satin of this age has a tendency to deteriorate, these are in remarkably good museum quality. Very probably only worn the once, these French pumps made in Paris, are decorated with wonderful ruched satin rosettes and mother-of-pearl buckles. I hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile!

On one such sunny, blue sky day I went for an afternoon stroll. Whilst on the walk, my eye was caught by this wonderful mauve rose bloom, reaching up to the sun, exposing a wonderful cluster of petals. I am not sure what variety it is, but the rose has a light, sweet fragrance, which I think suits this magnificent mauve beauty!

A dusty late summer evening at an abandoned cottage along the Old Mine road on the Delaware River, New Jersey.

I once read about an elderly lady who was the last of her family to linger and occupy this farm before it had to be turned over to the parks department. I am curious about the rest of the story and I think of her whenever we visit.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 8th of February is "two-gether" where in order to meet it, I need to submit a picture of two similar animals, plants or objects, close to each other, excluding people. Being a collector of vintage and antique costume, although these do not belong to me but to a fellow vintage fashion collector, I fell in love with these beautiful wedding pumps when I saw them! I asked my friend if I could take a photo of them. He was more than happy for me to do so, so I put them on a table in a spot where they could bask in the sun. I took this photograph last year, but I had yet to upload it to Flickr, so it is lovely to have an excuse to share it with you today as my choice for the theme. These beautiful white kid leather Spanish heeled slippers with their pearl spangled satin straps are wedding pumps made in Paris and worn by the bride in April of 1929. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
