"Kiss me in the rain,

And make me feel like a child again.

Bring back all those memories.

Kiss me in the rain,

And make me feel like a child again.

With the feeling that I get,

I don't even mind if I get wet."

Lyrics from Kiss me in the Rain (1979), written by Lisa Ratner and Sandy Farina, performed by Barbra Streisand.

Spring is in swing in Melbourne, and with the sun also come spring showers, and my "Gold Medal" hybrid tea rose, which is always the first to bloom in my rose garden every year, enjoyed a spring shower followed by a burst of sunshine yesterday.

The "Gold Medal" hybrid tea rose was first bred in 1982 in the United States by Jack Christensen, and later introduced to market by Armstrong Nursery. Jack is the youngest rose breeder to develop an All-American rose and he is credited with hybridising over eighty different types of roses. This rose was created by crossing elements from the roses Granada, Garden Party, and Yellow Pages. The result is a gorgeous yellowish rose that has rich copper accents, that ultimately fades to a soft cream color.

Well, it is summer here in Melbourne, although up until recently a very mild one, which has made for a selection of wonderful rose blooms. with the weather being so fine, I decided to take a stroll in the summer sun the other day

On my walk I went past a garden of a small Art Deco bungalow which has a selection of old fashioned fragrant roses in its garden! I don't know what variety this is, but its complex petal structure of fabulous pink frills is so architectural and beautiful. It reminded me of frills on a beautiful dancing frock. The bloom had a light whiff of a sweet scent too.

"Why did I want you?

What could you offer me?

A love to last a life time through.

And when I lost my heart so many years ago,

I lost it lovingly and willingly to you."

Lyrics from Why Did I Choose You (1965), written by Herbert Martin and Michael Leonard, performed by Barbra Streisand.

Spring has finally come to Melbourne after a long and grey winter, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours.

I took a lovely afternoon stroll under blue skies and warm sunshine yesterday and I walked past this beautiful "Julia's Rose" which is thriving in the well maintained garden of a stylish 1930s Art Deco clinker brick villa. This coffee coloured rose bush is a favourite of mine, as I love the shape of the flowers as they expand into full bloom, so for me it was abvious choice to capture this beauty as she opens.

Introduced in 1976 by Wisbech Plant Farm in the United Kingdom, "Julia's Rose" is an unusual colour blend of coffee, lavender and pink blushes on long smooth stems. A tall open bush, this rose repeat flowers often in clusters from October to May and in cooler weather can become completely coffee-coloured.

Spring has finally come to Melbourne after a long and grey winter, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours. This includes in my own garden where my roses are sending forth their first flush of beautiful blooms. This one is one of my Papa Meilland blooms.

Papa Meilland is a magnificent French hybrid tea rose. Named in honour of a Doyen in the rose breeding world by his Grandson, the now famous Allain Meilland, Papa Meilland has dark, velvety crimson coloured petals and a magnificent, strong, old rose fragrance. This rose was bred in France and introduced in 1963. I have two of these bushes in my front garden, and although white roses are my favourite type of rose, the Papa Meilland rose would come a very close second!

On my walk I went past a garden of a small Art Deco bungalow which has a selection of old fashioned fragrant roses in its garden! I don't know what variety this is, but its stylish structure of apricot petals, albeit slight sunburn around the edges, is so architectural and beautiful. Like its pink neighbours in the garden bed, it had a light whiff of a sweet scent to it.

The weather has been rather unpredictable and dramatic over the last few days here. We have had days of oppressive heat, then humidity. Then, yesterday afternoon a storm cell came through bringing with it much needed rain, and dampening the high temperatures.

Thankfully, my new "Nahema" rose blooms have been protected from the harsh sun of the last few days, and received a much needed drench last night. This is how I found one of the fresh blooms this morning: bejewelled by glorious raindrops.

"Nahema" was bred by Georges Delbard, in France, from "Grand Siecle" and "Heritage" in 1991 and released in France in 2006. "Nahema" has established a reputation as one of the best fragrant climbers on the market. It produces masses of highly fragrant and deeply cupped old-fashioned blooms with velvety petals of delicate almond blossom pink. This rose blooms in profusion throughout the season with a strong perfume of citrus, peach, apricot, pear and rose. The renowned perfume of the Guerlain range of perfumes is based on the essence of this rose.

"O my Luve is like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June;

O my Luve is like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune."

I'd like to take a moment to wish all my Flickr Friends and followers a very happy Saint Valentine's Day!

I hope your day is filled with happiness and love in abundance.

My Papa Meilland rose has been sending forth beautiful fragrant blooms throughout spring and summer. It looks like I will continue to have a fine showing looking at all the buds about to burst out in the first flush of blooms.

I took an afternoon stroll in the spring sunshine today, and I walked past this beautiful "Emilien Guillot" rose which is thriving in the well maintained garden of a stylish 1930s Art Deco clinker brick villa.

Bred by Dominique Massad and introduced in France by Guillot/Roseraies Pierre Guillot in 2001 as "Emilien Guillot", this rose has a mild to strong, fruity, rose fragrance, ancd its blooms feature between sixty and eighty petals in a beautiful form. Their striking vermilion and orange blooms are so showy and eye catching. Bathed in spring sun, it was begging to be photographed!

A very small plane belonging to TAP Portuguese Airlines which took us from Lisbon to Seville with ten passengers, pilot and co-pilot and no flight attendent. Dinner box on the seat with a set of ear plugs against the tremendous noise in the cabin and everyone got to watch the pilot since they were not separated from the cabin. So much fun!! I still remember it very fondly :)

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

Our back garden is bursting with new life and these Bleeding Hearts are doing their part to beautify the earth.

The lovely heart-shaped flowers that hang from each arching branch always bring a smile to my face.

I captured this image with my long 200-500mm birding lens, standing 16 feet away and using a 360mm focal length.

I usually use my 105mm macro lens, but it's always fun to explore out-of-the-box possibilities with my lenses, and this one shows an example of that :)

Enjoy, and have a great weekend, everyone!

Last Friday I went to visit a friend who has a beautiful, rambling cottage garden: a haven of colour and greenery in the inner city. His roses are starting to bloom as the days grow longer and there is more sunshine. This includes his Old Master rose, whose blooms caught my eye as they blazed in the dappled light.

"Old Master" was one of the first of the hand painted roses bred by Samuel Darragh for Sam McGredy Nurseries in New Zealand in the 1970’s. A novelty at the time, the blooms gave the look that one colour was splashed with another. Today, they are still grown and a wider selection of varieties are available. One of the earliest varieties and one still grown today is "Old Master" which has crimson red blooms that feature a silvery white centre and reverse to the petals. Unlike some other hand painted roses, the colours are fairly stable throughout the season and the clusters of blooms will form a very colourful display.

Spring has finally come to Melbourne after a long and grey winter, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours.

As I strolled along the limestone path that has been bathed by sun and rain for 1,000 years, I felt I entered a world like fantasy that came to life, that took me back in time a thousand years.

This grove of trees was often mentioned in battle reports after The Battle of Gettysburg was over. It is a significant visual marker that helped them document and explain the movements of the armies on the fields. The book monument in front tells, on one page, of the "High Water Mark" of the incoming tide of confederate soldiers in Pickett's famous charge; and on the other page it honors those who defended the Union line and repulsed the charge on July 3, 1863.

Under one of my previous photos, you can read one description of what Pickett's Charge was like, written by someone who was there that day:

The old high street at Gravesend, Kent. Behind me and my camera is the river Thames. Very easy to imagine days gone by when the boats would dock here from London.

Yes, spring is now well and truly in the air, as winter in Melbourne fades into memory... almost... and there have been days of glorious sunshine and blue skies over the last few days.

On one such sunny, blue sky day I went for an afternoon stroll. On my stroll in the sunshine, I went past a garden of an old Edwardian bungalow which has a selection of rose bushes along their front fence, just starting to bloom, and this curvaceous beauty really caught my eye! I don't know what variety this is, but its shape and petal structure are so elegant and beautiful. This beauty, showing off her pretty pink petals has a light and sweet fragrance which I think suits this curvaceous beauty very nicely.

Melbourne has experienced a wonderful Indian summer this year, and as a result, not only are the Autumnal colours starting to appear, but there are still plenty of beautiful blooms.

This orange rose standing in the midst of a lush green garden on a walk I took last week caught my eye. I don't know what variety it is, but as the single bloom on the bush, or in the entire garden it was a delight to see.
