This is a short film about the hundreds of off-grid people I met as part of my travels around the US for my book OFF THE GRID - Inside the Movement for More Space, Less Government and True Independence in Modern America.

I'm working on a project called Sustainable Howe Sound with the David Suzuki Foundation (sustainablehowesound.ca/).
From the website we're building... "Life in the waters of Howe Sound is rebounding after decades of harm from industrial activity. Planning for the future is the best way to protect the sound’s wildlife and communities. Sustainable Howe Sound is a platform for individuals and groups who share a commitment to protect Howe Sound. The end goal is a plan for land and marine environments guided by public and expert input.".
Our first visit was to Camp Firmcom (fircom.ca/) on Gambier Island. Check out the interview and photos! :)

A little girl peeks around a cabana (which has a lantern for night-time use) and a bigger one holds a potato chip at Off the Grid's Picnic at the Presidio, where we went for supper. It was a cool evening with a (very) chilly breeze. There were twenty-or-so food trucks and hundreds (if not thousands) of hungry people on the Presidio's Main Parade Ground for the weekly event.
Nellie E's is a solar-powered, totally green, off the grid saloon located 5 miles of dirt road past Cienega Springs Rd. /Hwy 95, outside of Parker AZ. It is tough going to get there and they don't have any good beer but we enjoyed every minute of our visit.

Large communities of unique homesteads exist up on the Taos Plateau. The building materials are varied and very original :-)
The term "Off the grid" applies to those that live off the main power grid. Most of these homes do not have electricity other than what they can generate from the sun and wind. Some do not even have running water. And there are others that have every modern luxury. Right down the road from this area are the world famous Taos "Earthships" .
