Shoppers, tourists, locals, and families rest on the illumnated benches set up on Stockton Street, adjacent to Off the Grid food trucks.
The US Constitution requires a census which is an "actual Enumeration". In Alaska, that includes trappers, lodge-owners, and hermits who live in cabins off the grid. These extraordinarily hardy US census employees ride their snowmobiles on the hundreds (or maybe thousands?) of miles of trails of rural, roadless Alaska, finding each individual cabin and counting the residents.
We met them at the Skwentna Roadhouse (50 miles from the nearest road) where they were gathered to analyze their data.
