I'm working on a project called Sustainable Howe Sound with the David Suzuki Foundation (sustainablehowesound.ca/).

The first night of Off the Grid at Proxy in Hayes Valley on Wednesday evenings.

The 3rd Hand HD braces once again proved their worth, as did a 7' cardboard tube we found in the trash (8" diameter, 1" thick). Two of us would brace the panel against the bottom footing (the top of the wall panels). Then , we placed the cardboard tube "rig" dead center on the floating panel. And finally, we put the feet of the 3rd Hand braces into two holes we cut into the tube, braced the other end to the diagonal floorboard, and "pumped" the 1/8" birch into place. It worked like a dream. No steaming required. We only lost 2 panels in this process (cracked). We also found that lightly misting the back of the birch panel with water made the bending much easier.
As you can see, wall sconces are installed & Ed Stevens (aka: super craftsman) is burning the midnight oil creating custom walnut panel strips and absolutely GORGEOUS birch multi-ply window treatments, loosely based on the originals.
Not just a "Mansion," this is the "Imperial Mansion." The "Imperial" part means it's got the iconic panoramic windows on both sides.

Here's the brain-trust behind the cardboard tube rig (from left): Jon Lapointe, Otono Lujan, and Ed Stevens... the guy who made it all happen. You can see how proud we are of ourselves. Honestly, until we found the tube in the trash, we had NO IDEA how we were gonna deal with these curves. As mentioned, it worked like a dream. To this day (7 months later), the curved panels are in pristine condition.
A little girl romps among less energetic adults at Off the Grid's Picnic at the Presidio, where we went for supper. It was a cool evening with a chilly breeze. There were twenty-or-so food trucks and hundreds (if not thousands) of hungry people on the Presidio's Main Parade Ground for the weekly event.
Nice place to come to work, eh? Pictured are some neighborhood kids enjoying a rainy Saturday @ Side Street.

How can we sing the praises of Ed Stevens, the young man who designed and installed this beautiful woodworking? Ed's a graduate of Vassar's furniture design program, and it's pretty obvious. He approached this project as a furniture designer, as opposed to a builder. The level of detail and function is mind-blowing.

For a number of years in my career as a librarian, I was a cataloger. When I started in cataloging, the generation of catalog cards for the card catalog was the daily work. But in time, my work changed to the "person who helped kill card catalogs" as new online systems developed. So it was sweet to see this card catalog today.

I was lucky enough to tag along with my mother and visit one of her friend's amazing house and garden. Extremely well kept (army of servents ensure that, I even saw them hand mowing the lawn blade by blade) and super luxurious. This place would be expensive in any country. However completely sustainable. Totally off the grid with solar power and a garden that produces all the fruit and vegetables required.
We used a combination of Styrofoam sheets (2 layers) coupled with that silvered "bubble-wrap" insulation you see @ the big box stores.

Dome Guys - Private living dome in California, constructed in 2007. This living space has green long-life cover, a bay window, and interior walls, which create separate rooms. This dome is off-the-grid.

Only the ceiling remains. Thank god we had the aluminette shade cloth set up... even so, the sun's heat expanded and contracted the fuselage dramatically over the course of the day. The edges of the birch panels would ripple in response to the heat, then settle back to their original shape come sundown.
Next, we secured 3/8" contractor's grade plywood over the insulation... essentially transforming every wall into a "load bearing surface," for pictures, cabinetry, shelves, etc.

With the walls and central ceiling panels up, that left only the corner radii. The plan was simple: pop the 1/8" birch ply into place, and use the edges of the ceiling and wall panels as foot-holds to expedite the process... but how can you jam 1/8" ply into a corner without cracking it? It's all about even pressure (and a big cardboard tube).
Sorry for not commenting today; we're going to be without power again and last time it wasn't from 8:30 to 3:30, it was over 10 hours. So see you tomorrow - have a happy day.
