A slightly unusual day today, as I took Laura to the airport for a brief trip to Finland, and then drove straight from there down to Berkshire for a long overdue visit to Jonemac's new house.

This clashed horribly with Eurovision, which I still got to enjoy, but off the grid.

Over the past few years I've taken to watching it whilst simultaneously being on a computer and taking the piss with an online community.

I really missed that this year, but the show was really bereft of characters. Power ballads have a place, but they're not Polish milkmaids!

I'm working on a project called Sustainable Howe Sound with the David Suzuki Foundation (sustainablehowesound.ca/).

From the website we're building... "Life in the waters of Howe Sound is rebounding after decades of harm from industrial activity. Planning for the future is the best way to protect the sound’s wildlife and communities. Sustainable Howe Sound is a platform for individuals and groups who share a commitment to protect Howe Sound. The end goal is a plan for land and marine environments guided by public and expert input.".

Our first visit was to Camp Firmcom (fircom.ca/) on Gambier Island. Check out the interview and photos! :)

Silver Islet, Ontario is a small village at the southern end of the Sibley Peninsula, which extends into Lake Superior. It has a fascinating history, and the village today, is entirely off the grid. Here is a link to information. encycl.opentopia.com/term/Silver_Islet,_Ontario I saw a documentary on this years ago.

it's surprising how difficult life now becomes when your internet connection is shut off unexpectedly . after 3 days of talking to a dozen people across several time zones, AT&T finally typed in the code needed to turn DSL service back on .

on day 1, customer support said the problem could not be on their end . day 2, the technician in India said the issue WAS was on their end - a shut off order had lingered in their system several days after an unsuccessful attempt to upgrade our service ... but since it was Sunday in California, nothing could be done . on Monday morning, it took 20 minutes to just reach a live person, then another hour to find someone to track down and kill the errant shut off order . of course, she did not have the power to reconnect service herself, but fortunately she did route it as a priority request and service returned later in the day ... normally it would have taken another day or two

i wonder if this business model will survive another 20 years ...

Looking forward to testing these new #gotenna units. These let you text and use GPS on your smartphone even without service! #offgrid #offthegrid #communication bit.ly/1OhBh4j

Yes, this is the store in Silver Islet, Ontario., an off the grid village east of Thunder Bay. We were there on a Tuesday. Unfortunately, the store is closed on Tuesday, as the owners go to Thunder Bay to restock their shelves. They run their store and diner on solar and generator power. More on the store later.

A nice way to spend a Friday evening. Lobsta Truck, a Sisig taco, and half a Creme Brûlée from the eponymous cart. Followed this up with a nice night ride home through the Presidio.

Here she is in Summer 2005 @ Armory NW. Note that there's no windows. Also note our ingenious "security" system on the '49M in the background. We began operating full-time out of these trailers in July 05 (without windows). We created these primitive wooden locking boards to to seal up every window opening, each night, for security. Yep, we're pretty hardcore.

It's almost shame that we had to cover up the beautiful aluminum work. Spartans were essentially adapted from the WWII bomber design that Getty's Spartan Aircraft Co. was making for the US Government... hence the uncanny resemblance to the interior of an aircraft fuselage.

Bike the US for MS does Adventure Cyc's TransAm > Western Express route justice.

Well, a blizzard hit last night and dumped 8 inches of snow on my camper in the forest. My batteries were drained so no heat and light. Read all about it here: www.thediyworld.com/blog/?p=1152

It got down to 40 degrees during the night inside the camper. The snow covered my solar panels so there is not charging today. I swept them off, but they were immediately covered with snow within minutes.

If I do not get power, there will be no heat again tonight. My fireplace has a built in water boiler which needs to have a water pump running and a couple fans to blow the heat. So I had to shut it all down last night and tough it out.

Reminds me of an old joke: "I'm writing a book. I've numbered all the pages, now all I gotta do is fill them in." Ten months later, it'll all be worth it.
