The internet unravelled. Systems collapsed. Within days, the digital world vanished—no signals, no power, no fuel. Money, wages, pensions: gone. Transport ground to a halt. Yet, in the chaos, people endured. This series captures the resilience of those left to navigate a world stripped bare of technology

I'm working on a project called Sustainable Howe Sound with the David Suzuki Foundation (sustainablehowesound.ca/).

From the website we're building... "Life in the waters of Howe Sound is rebounding after decades of harm from industrial activity. Planning for the future is the best way to protect the sound’s wildlife and communities. Sustainable Howe Sound is a platform for individuals and groups who share a commitment to protect Howe Sound. The end goal is a plan for land and marine environments guided by public and expert input.".

Our first visit was to Camp Firmcom (fircom.ca/) on Gambier Island. Check out the interview and photos! :)

I visited my niece's off-the-grid house located in bushland north of Orange, NSW. 14 solar PV panels provide power to a battery storage system. The windmill that pumps bore water can also be switched to generate power for the system. House is passive solar design with a composting toilet and beautiful views down the valley. But with bush all around, they will need a bushfire emergency plan.

Open camping in the Tamarisk grove along with four pair of hummingbirds. The southern section of this largest of all state parks is dieing a slow death from inappropriate weekend use like off-road dirt biking and 4x4 racing. The ever diminishing park policing resources are primarily relegated to the more heavily touristed northern section, but there is still much to see, as I discovered while aimlessly wandering through a remote section. I came across a previously unstudied ancient campsite complete with seed grinding stones, cactus fence remnants, and stone "placement art" on the desert floor. After leading a ranger to the site her response was a thank-you and a "Best keep it to yourself".

Dinner tonight at Off the Grid in San Francisco. A special place to eat, because Suki can come along =)

Of course, she's not too happy that I can't share my sisig tacos with her. Sorry Suki....

Silver Islet, Ontario is a small village at the southern end of the Sibley Peninsula, which extends into Lake Superior. It has a fascinating history, and the village today, is entirely off the grid. Here is a link to information. encycl.opentopia.com/term/Silver_Islet,_Ontario I saw a documentary on this years ago. I will share a unique experience that we enjoyed here in later pictures.

Dome Guys - Private living dome in California, constructed in 2007. This living space has green long-life cover, a bay window, and interior walls, which create separate rooms. This dome is off-the-grid.

I'm too poor, hungry, and impatient to wait forty minutes in line to spend ten bucks on two miniature tacos, I don't care how good they are.

Nikon d40 A relaxing day at the off grid cabin. There's nothing like a weekend in nature to snap you back into reality.
