During our stay in the Flores Islands, Indonesia, our local friend Robbie took us to Lasang Kuwus village to witness a Caci fight, a traditional event that happens infrequently. We were fortunate to see it, but the highlight was the remote nature of the village. The locals had never seen foreigners before, and everyone wanted to take selfies or play with us. In one such interaction, I captured a beautiful portrait of a local Indonesian girl holding a baby and smiling at us, reflecting the pure and welcoming nature of the people.

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it's possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.

The hike to Toti Waterfall leads through a rugged mountain landscape with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. The trail winds along steep slopes and rocky paths, surrounded by dry grasslands and scattered shrubs. Along the way, impressive cliffs and natural formations add a unique character to the scenery. The fresh mountain air and the tranquility of nature make the journey an unforgettable experience. At the end, the spectacular Toti Waterfall awaits as a rewarding sight after the challenging climb.

Beautiful view on the semi-desert landscape of Udabno — a world of vast emptiness and rolling hills. Udabno is located in eastern Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan, and forms a fascinating contrast to the green, mountainous regions of the country. Here stretches a vast semi-desert landscape of colorful, rolling hills, dusty tracks, and endless horizons. The earth glows in shades of yellow, red, and brown, especially when the sun hangs low in the sky, and the silence is almost tangible. In this rugged environment, traditional shepherds still roam. With small flocks, they move across the open terrain on foot or horseback, searching for patches of grass. Sometimes they appear as tiny dots on the horizon, their loyal dogs at their sides. Their simple, hardy way of life has changed little over the centuries, giving the region an authentic, timeless feel. The combination of the striking landscape, the profound stillness, and the presence of the shepherds makes Udabno a truly unique place where time seems to stand still.

Over the last couple of years I have developed a personal scale for my nature photos:

1) A documentation photo of the animal or bird

2) A sharp photo of it

3) A sharp photo of it with good light

4) A sharp photo of it with good light and good background

5) A sharp photo of it with good light, good background and doing something behaviorally - such as mating, flying, eating or fighting

For me, getting a 5 is a rare occurrence. This roseate spoonbill launching itself into flight might be one...

This old pine has certainly earned its name of Fang in the winter.

Short video of Charlie walking through this area last February...in the comments.

The tree itself is huge and tall and has obviously survived here for many many years.

Big Horn Sheep in Burnt River Canyon in Baker County

A beautiful New Year’s Day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon with lots of Bighorn Sheep out to help us ring in the new year.

The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

Ban Sala are a notable geological landmarks in Nan Province, located in northern Thailand. It is also known as the "Stone Pillars of Nan" or "Clay Pagoda" in English. These sites consist of impressive limestone pillars that rise from the ground, similar to the hoodoos in Bryce Canyon in the United States. These striking formations are the result of millions of years of erosion by rainwater and wind, which has worn away the softer layers of rock and left behind the harder layers that make up the pillars. What makes these places truly unique is the combination of the scenery and scenic surroundings of Nan. The green valleys and vast rice paddies add an extra layer of beauty to the experience. Visitors can explore the area via hiking trails and viewing platforms, where they can take in breathtaking views of the jagged pillars and surrounding landscape. It is a great place to enjoy the peace and serenity of nature and take unique photos.

From a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming last year....

The John Day River and a butte. Way off the beaten path in north central Oregon. A lovely spot that the tourist masses likely never see. After visiting the Painted Hills, we decided to take a road that led through a remote area with only a vague idea of where it ended up. We liked the look of the terrain, so off we went. Turned out to be a stunning drive with fabulous views. Sometimes, the feeling I get when viewing a wonderful landscape is somehow enhanced when I realize that it hasn't been viewed by millions of others...selfish I guess.

We are on our way to Udabno. In the distance, we can already see the village, nestled among the colorful hills and bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. In the valley below, countless cows are grazing peacefully in the evening quiet. Udabno is located in the east of Georgia — a world of vast emptiness and rolling hills, near the border with Azerbaijan, and forms a fascinating contrast to the green, mountainous parts of the country. Here, an impressive semi-desert landscape unfolds, with colorful hills, dusty trails, and endless horizons. The earth shines in shades of yellow, red, and brown, especially when the sun hangs low in the sky, and the silence is almost tangible. Not far from the village of Udabno lies a small lake, better known as the swimming lake — a hidden gem in this rugged environment. This peaceful, natural lake is surrounded by gently rolling semi-desert hills and vast open plains.

Because it is a natural lake, its water level changes with the seasons. Thanks to its remote location, the lake feels incredibly serene — you’ll likely have the entire landscape to yourself. The calm water mirrors the endless sky, and the surroundings are perfect for peaceful walks, picnics, or simply soaking in the silence. Occasionally, shepherds pass by with their flocks, adding to the timeless, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Especially in the early morning or during sunset, when the light turns golden and the hills glow in warm tones, the little lake feels truly magical.

Driving towards Udabno, we watched the village appear between colorful hills, glowing under the setting sun. In the valley, cows grazed peacefully in the evening light. Udabno lies in eastern Georgia, where endless semi-desert hills stretch toward the horizon, forming a striking contrast to the country’s lush mountains. Nearby, a small natural lake — often called the swimming lake — rests quietly among the rolling hills. Its water level shifts with the seasons, and the peaceful surroundings invite slow walks, quiet moments, and sunset views. Occasionally, shepherds and their flocks pass by, adding a timeless charm to this remote and magical place.

The drive from Tetovo to the ski village of Popova Šapka slowly climbs upward, with each curve revealing a new view of the Šar Mountains. The road winds through forests and along mountain slopes, where autumn gently transforms the landscape from green to shades of gold and ochre. The pace naturally slows — not because of traffic, but because the scenery invites you to pause and take it in. In the photo, you see the arrival in Popova Šapka, high above Tetovo. In October, the village is still quiet; the ski season has yet to begin and the slopes lie silent. Instead of snow, there are autumn colors, crisp mountain air, and a sense of calm. Chalets and hotels are scattered across the hillside, overlooking the valley below. Standing out in the landscape is the mosque, its slender minaret rising above the village as a familiar landmark. It serves as a reminder that even here, high in the mountains, daily life and faith remain closely connected. On the other side of the village stands the Church of St. Naum of Ohrid, highlighting the unique character of Popova Šapka — a place where different religious traditions coexist, surrounded by nature and silence. At this time of year, the village feels almost suspended in time — no skis, no crowds, only the quiet of the mountains, soft light, and the feeling of being momentarily removed from the world below.

Popova Šapka, North Macedonia — A quiet mountain village above Tetovo, where autumn colors replace snow and the slopes rest beneath the Šar Mountains.

Hiking in Yli-Nampavast wilderness and breathtaking natural beauty. The area boasts picturesque hiking trails that meander through forests, alongside lakes, and amidst rolling hills. In this region, there are opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The landscape here is characterized by dense forests of pine and birch trees, interspersed with clearings and wetlands. As you explore the trails in Yli-Nampa, keep an eye out for native wildlife such as wolverines, reindeer, elk, and various bird species. The bears hibernate. If you're fortunate to visit during the darker months of the year, Yli-Nampa is ideally located for viewing the northern lights aurora borealis. After a day of hiking, you might be treated to a spectacular display of these dancing lights in the night sky. One of the most appealing aspects of hiking in Yli-Nampa is the sense of solitude and tranquility. The remote location and pristine wilderness provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. In addition to natural beauty, hiking in Lapland offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local Sami culture. Learn about traditional practices, visit reindeer farms, and perhaps even sample local delicacies such as smoked fish or cloudberries.

Yli-Nampa is located in the north of Finland, specifically in the Lapland region. This region is located above the Arctic Circle and is known for its vast forests, lakes and un-spoilt nature. Yli-Nampa itself is an area in Lapland that is suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and experiencing northern nature and culture. During the month of January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night. This phenomenon occurs in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our way to Luosto. In Yli-Nampa, the moon shines beautifully over the forest while the sun has yet to rise, but the sky is beginning to lighten. The snow in Yli-Nampa lies like an untouched white carpet, and the trees are draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step breaks the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees bend gently under the weight of the snow, and nature seems to be in a deep winter slumber. The path is lined with pine trees adorned with ice crystals. The expanse of the snowy landscape stretches to the horizon, and the cold air tingles on my skin. The moment with the moon, surrounded by the white beauty of nature, is magical. It's not just a hike but also an encounter with the beauty of winter in Lapland.

There are fifty shades of green, and none of them are jaded. Welcome to Ireland! It's said that Ireland, once visited, is never forgotten, and for once the blarney delivered treasure to be kept for a lifetime. The Western Irish landscape has a mythic resonance, the country's history is almost tangible with ruins standing the test of time and its people seem put on earth expressly to restore faith in humanity as their warmth and humor will make all feel welcome.

My dear friend Daragh and I set out for an adventurous experience second to none along the Connemara Loop which is situated in breathtaking North West Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Following the Loop, we were taken on a journey through an ever changing landscape of craggy mountain peaks, spectacular expansive sandy beaches, the wild North Atlantic, mist covered lakes, pre-historic bogs and shady glens. All exemplify the peaceful solitude and rugged beauty of the West of Ireland. A landscape peppered with quaint but lively villages where all the convenience of the modern day is available alongside an opportunity to step back in time to a more relaxed and friendly era. Though the roads are rather narrow for this West Texas driver there was no getting lost although the wandering sheep may be inclined to cause a traffic-jam here and there.

The Gergeti Trinity Church, located in Georgia, is situated on a mountain top near the village of Gergeti, near Stepantsminda Kazbegi in the Caucasus region, at an altitude of about 2,170 metres. The first light of dawn in the foreground of the photo enhances the mystical character of the location, while the snow-capped peaks and the dark silhouettes of the church emphasize the dramatic atmosphere of the landscape. This area is popular with hikers and photographers for its breathtaking views and historical value. The impressive snow-capped peaks of Mount Kazbek in the background are illuminated by the golden glow of the rising sun. The Georgian Orthodox church was built in the 14th century and is a beautiful example of medieval Georgian architecture. The church is an important national symbol of Georgia and attracts many pilgrims and tourists every year. Behind the Gergeti Trinity Church lies Kazbek (in Georgian: მყინვარწვერი, Mkinvartsveri), with an altitude of 5,054 meters one of the highest and most famous mountains in Georgia and the Greater Caucasus. Although the mountain is hidden in this photo, Kazbek is known for its impressive presence and mythological significance. Kazbek is an extinct stratovolcano. The name Mkinvartsveri means the Icy Peak in Georgian. The mountain is popular among mountaineers and adventurers. The standard route for the ascent usually starts from Stepantsminda, with the Gergeti Trinity Church serving as the starting point. Kazbek is often covered in snow and ice, which adds to the spectacular and mysterious appearance of the region. On clear days, the summit offers beautiful panoramic views of the Caucasus.

Gergeti Trinity Church is a 14th-century church in Georgia, located at an altitude of 2,170 meters near the village of Gergeti. It is located near Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), overlooking the majestic Mount Kazbek in the Caucasus. The church is an important symbol of Georgia and attracts many pilgrims and tourists. Due to its remote location, it offers spectacular and mystical views of the mountains.

Farmers in the Kazbegi region in Georgia lead a simple yet challenging life. The climate is harsh, with severe winters and short summers. Due to the rocky soil and mountainous terrain, agriculture is difficult, so most farmers focus on livestock breeding, mainly sheep and cattle. They also cultivate cold-resistant crops such as potatoes and barley. Many locals combine traditional farming with tourism. With the growing interest in the Kazbegi region, some farmers rent out rooms to travelers or sell local products such as honey, cheese, and handmade woolen clothing. Near the farmhouse, close to the village of Arsha, lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. A bit further lies the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it is possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.

Near the Arsha Waterfall, amidst lush green pastures, a farmer walks quietly with her two cows. The Kazbegi Mountains provide an impressive backdrop as she leads her cattle to pasture. The scene reflects the simple, rural life in this remote region, where people and animals live in harmony with the untouched nature. The quiet rhythm of daily life in these mountains contrasts sharply with the rugged terrain and the pristine landscape around them.

Big Horn Sheep in Burnt River Canyon in Baker County

A beautiful Fall day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon .

Halfway up the Shannon Falls. We just had to go off the beaten path away from paved view points. Only problem , I can’t figure out how to travel light , slingshot backpack , shoulder bag and tripod – not the easiest way to climb rocks.

If you spend enough time wandering the dirt roads of the Palouse....the gems of those back roads sometimes reveal themselves.

Popova Šapka lies high in the Šar Mountains above the city of Tetovo, a place where the mountains seem to set the rhythm of life. In summer and autumn, the ski village is surprisingly quiet. The slopes rest, but the landscape remains alive — with rolling hills, pine forests, and scattered chalets nestled along the mountainsides. In the photo, you see Hotel Konak, with its sunny terrace overlooking the valley. Here, you can enjoy local dishes while taking in the fresh mountain air and wide-open views. It’s a place where time naturally slows down. Below, winding paths trace their way through the landscape, while the village quietly waits for winter to return. At this time of year, Popova Šapka reveals a different side — no skis, no crowds, just space, silence, and warm autumn colors. A place where nature, simplicity, and hospitality come together, offering a peaceful escape from everyday life.

Popova Šapka, North Macedonia — A peaceful mountain village above Tetovo, where autumn colors, fresh air, and quiet landscapes define the view. In the photo, you see hotel Konak and several cable cars.

The province of Nan is located in the north of Thailand and borders Laos. It is one of the lesser known provinces of Thailand, but is known for its natural beauty, rich culture and ancient history. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for adventure and relaxation in nature. Road 1256 passes through the mountains of Nan and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.

Thailand is home to several beautiful national parks that showcase the country's diverse natural beauty. The Doi Phu Kha National Park is located near the border between Thailand and Laos. The National Park is also home to the highest mountain peak and beautiful waterfalls. Sapan Waterfall, also known as Mae Charim Waterfall, is a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush green mountains and lush natural landscapes. The waterfall is located deep in the mountains and is surrounded by lush tropical jungle, making for an enchanting landscape. The waterfall consists of several levels, with water flowing down large rock formations. Each tier of the waterfall offers great views and swimming opportunities. The sound of running water and the fresh mountain air create a serene and tranquil environment where you can relax and enjoy the natural beauty. To reach the waterfall, you must follow a path that winds through the lush jungle. It can be an adventurous journey, but the reward of reaching the waterfall is totally worth it. Along the way, enjoy the region's abundant flora and fauna, including exotic birds and wildlife. If you want to experience the beauty of nature and take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Sapan Waterfall in Nan Province, Thailand is a great destination to visit.

Last sunset light hits the peaks of the surreal natural columns of the Stars Valley - Darr-e Setareha - in Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf.

This was a "quick" stop on the way to the Qeshm International airport to fly back to Tehran. We did well in leaving this for last and enjoying it in the sunset light. A memorable goodbye from the lovely islands of the Strait of Hormuz.

The clear water of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park last week was a pleasure to see and photograph....

Mysterious sand dune out in the Mojave Desert, not Kelso, not Mesquite/ Stopepipe, not Dumont, not Ibex, Eureka, Algodones, Glamis, Imperial . .. . the meaning of explore has nothing to do with a website.

Off the beaten path in the Mojave Desert.

There were so much tiny tracks in dunes and I was surprised by so many desert iguanas jumping out of the sand at me. They were scared shitless and so was I the first couple of times until I got used to it.

This striking rock formation along the coast of Tenerife showcases the power of wind and water over millennia. The island’s volcanic origins have given rise to unique geological features, sculpted by nature into surreal, almost otherworldly shapes. A breathtaking example of the Canary Islands' dramatic coastal beauty.

A beautiful spring day exploring the back roads and landscapes of Baker County Oregon near the towns of Keating and Baker City.

Spent the day watching the seasons change in Eastern Oregon, with big dramatic skies. Lots of baby calves beginning to arrive on the nearby ranches, and while it’s a little early for spring migration still but spotted a few fun birds including lots of Red Tail Hawks and several nesting great horned owls.

: Ancient stone archway along the trail to Katholiko Bay, Crete. The weathered structure stands on rocky ground, overlooking a rugged hillside that slopes toward the sea. Surrounded by sparse Mediterranean vegetation and framed by a partly cloudy sky, the scene evokes the island’s layered history and the raw beauty of its coastal wilderness.

The very last sunrise of 2016 at Jenne Farm, Reading Vermont.

Often times a fairly busy location, photographers shoulder to shoulder waiting for the first rays of sunlight. On this last morning of '16 I was solo enjoying balmy 2 deg. above zero F temps and drifts of snow mid thigh.
