One a very windy afternoon visit to the Maine coast, I saw this gull flying solo coming in from the left...and I was able to frame him with the famous lighthouse in the background.
It helped that he was battling a fierce wind that slowed him down as he glided past the rocks where I was standing.
If you click on the photo to see the larger version, you'll notice that there is another gull flying almost in formation next to the most prominent one...

Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We embarked early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature appears to be in a deep winter slumber. We plan to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness.

My dear friend Daragh and I set out for an adventurous experience second to none along the Connemara Loop which is situated in breathtaking North West Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Following the Loop, we were taken on a journey through an ever changing landscape of craggy mountain peaks, spectacular expansive sandy beaches, the wild North Atlantic, mist covered lakes, pre-historic bogs and shady glens. All exemplify the peaceful solitude and rugged beauty of the West of Ireland. A landscape peppered with quaint but lively villages where all the convenience of the modern day is available alongside an opportunity to step back in time to a more relaxed and friendly era. Though the roads are rather narrow for this West Texas driver there was no getting lost although the wandering sheep may be inclined to cause a traffic-jam here and there.

The bird's nest fern, also known as nest fern or Asplenium nidus, is a tropical fern species found in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. This fern is known for its large, glossy leaves that form a distinctive funnel shape, similar to a bird's nest. The bird's nest fern usually grows on logs, rocks or other vertical surfaces. It is an epiphytic plant, meaning it has no roots in the soil, but instead attaches itself to another plant or substrate to obtain water and nutrients. At waterfalls, the bird's nest fern can often be found on moist tree stumps and rocks where it thrives in the humid environment. The leaves of the bird's nest fern are large, feathery and bright green in color. They can reach a length of about 1 to 2 meters. The leaf surface is smooth and glossy, and the leaf margins are often slightly wavy or curled. The leaves grow in a rosette-shaped arrangement, with young leaves unfolding from the center of the rosette. The bird's nest fern is known for its graceful and ornamental appearance, and is often grown as a houseplant for its attractive foliage.

The province of Nan is located in the north of Thailand and borders Laos. It is one of the lesser known provinces of Thailand, but is known for its natural beauty, rich culture and ancient history. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for adventure and relaxation in nature. Highway 1081 passes through the mountains of Nan and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. Curve Number 3 on the road is a scenic stretch of highway that winds through the green hills and is shaped like the number three. It is an instagrammable spot because of the combination of its unique shape and beautiful surroundings. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.
We have all taken long car journeys to get to a beautiful tourist attraction. But what if the road is the attraction? In Nan province, a scenic stretch of road called Road 3 is becoming a photogenic destination. Highway 1081 cuts through the beautiful hills of the northern province and connects Bo Kluea district with Santi Suk district. On a fine day, part of the road winds through the green hills under the clear blue sky, and the bend of the road forms the shape of the number three, which earns its nickname. Although the road is attracting more and more visitors, the hills still allow for some traffic breaks for people to see and photograph the road that cuts through the picturesque hill. Cars drift off the road, out of the way of the scenery, allowing well-timed cameramen to capture uninterrupted footage. The government has improved the sidewalks in the area and has worked to keep the area clean. The view and the road are not blocked.

Hoewel de weg steeds meer bezoekers trekt, laten de heuvels nog steeds wat verkeerspauzes toe zodat mensen de weg die door de pittoreske heuvel snijdt, kunnen zien en fotograferen. Auto's raken van de weg af, uit de weg van het landschap, zodat goed getimede cameramensen ononderbroken beelden kunnen maken. De overheid heeft de trottoirs in het gebied verbeterd en heeft gewerkt om het gebied schoon te houden. Het uitzicht en de weg zijn niet geblokkeerd.

The Gergeti Trinity Church, located in Georgia, is situated on a mountain top near the village of Gergeti, near Stepantsminda Kazbegi in the Caucasus region, at an altitude of about 2,170 metres. The first light of dawn in the foreground of the photo enhances the mystical character of the location, while the snow-capped peaks and the dark silhouettes of the church emphasize the dramatic atmosphere of the landscape. This area is popular with hikers and photographers for its breathtaking views and historical value. The impressive snow-capped peaks of Mount Kazbek in the background are illuminated by the golden glow of the rising sun. The Georgian Orthodox church was built in the 14th century and is a beautiful example of medieval Georgian architecture. The church is an important national symbol of Georgia and attracts many pilgrims and tourists every year. The name Mkinvartsveri means the Icy Peak in Georgian. The mountain is popular among mountaineers and adventurers. Kazbek is often covered in snow and ice, which adds to the spectacular and mysterious appearance of the region. On clear days, the summit offers beautiful panoramic views of the Caucasus.

The David Gareja Monastery Complex is one of the most unique and historically significant religious sites in Georgia. Located in the Kakheti Kartli region, near the border with Azerbaijan, it is carved into the rocks of a rugged, semi-desert landscape. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by David Garejeli, one of the thirteen Assyrian monks who helped spread Christianity in Georgia. Over the centuries, the complex grew into an important center of religion, art, and scholarship, especially during the medieval period. Despite being repeatedly plundered — by Mongols, Persians, and others — it has always retained its spiritual significance. The complex includes several parts, such as Lavra, the oldest section still inhabited by monks, Udabno, a group of cave monasteries higher up the slopes with centuries-old frescoes, and Bertubani and Chichkhituri, more remote areas with watchtowers, chapels, and hermit cells. All of it is hewn from soft sandstone cliffs, forming a striking fusion of natural form and human devotion. Because the monastery lies on the border, it has become a point of political tension between Georgia and Azerbaijan, as part of the site lies on Azerbaijani territory. From the complex, one can enjoy breathtaking views over the vast, silent semi-desert plains stretching to the horizon. The striking red and pink hues in the ridges are the result of iron-rich clay layers and centuries of erosion, which reveal the layers like a kind of geological pie. These colour contrasts alternate with straw-yellow plains, green shrub cover and dark shadows in the valleys — giving the landscape an almost otherworldly feel. It feels like an area "out of time," ideal for those who love rugged beauty, silence and hidden stories.

Bulnes é uma pequena aldeia situada no maciço central dos Picos de Europa, no concelho de Cabrales, nas Astúrias. É um lugar isolado e tranquilo, rodeado de montanhas impressionantes, como o Picu Urriellu ou Naranjo de Bulnes. Para chegar a Bulnes, só há duas opções: ir a pé por um trilho pedregoso que parte de Poncebos, ou usar o funicular subterrâneo que atravessa a rocha em 7 minutos.

A beautiful winter day for exploring the winding back roads of the Baker and Keating valleys with spectacular views of the Wallowa and Elk Horn Mountains.
A little early for spring migration still but spotted a few fun birds including lots of Red Tail Hawks, some Horned Larks and a Say's Phoebe.

The David Gareja Monastery complex lies deeply tucked away in the rugged, semi-desert landscape of eastern Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan. The surroundings are marked by dry hillsides, weathered rock faces, and vast, desolate plains — a landscape that breathes silence. It is precisely this remoteness that made the site a sanctuary for monks seeking to withdraw from worldly life for centuries. In this photo, you see one of the many stone-carved stairways leading to a modest cave cell with a wooden door marked by a cross. These entrances, partially hidden in the sandstone, gave access to hermit dwellings and prayer chambers where monks lived in seclusion — devoted to silence, prayer, and contemplation. The rock structure is rough yet purposeful; the steps shaped by centuries of use and exposure to the elements. Though parts of the complex have fallen into ruin, places like this are still in use. Behind this door, Georgian Orthodox monks may still reside today, faithfully continuing the austere lifestyle of their spiritual predecessors. The atmosphere here is timeless: silence prevails, the stone steps crunch softly beneath your feet, and the boundary between earth and spirit feels thinner with every step. During our visit, we were the only visitors, allowing us to explore the entire site in absolute tranquility. From the monastery, a breathtaking view opens out over the stillness of the endless semi-desert plains — a place of peace, reflection, and quiet mysticism.
Nestled in Georgia’s remote eastern hills, the David Gareja Monastery blends into a silent, semi-desert landscape. This photo shows a weathered stone staircase leading to a secluded cave cell — once a refuge for monks seeking solitude and prayer. Though centuries old, the site remains active, with Georgian Orthodox monks still living in quiet devotion amid these carved sandstone cliffs. The stillness here is as powerful as the view: vast, untouched, and deeply spiritual.
Het David Gareja-kloostercomplex ligt diep verscholen in het ruige, halfwoestijnachtige landschap van Oost-Georgië, vlak bij de grens met Azerbeidzjan. De omgeving bestaat uit droge hellingen, verweerde rotswanden en verlaten vlaktes — een landschap dat stilte ademt. Juist deze afgelegen ligging maakte de plek eeuwenlang tot een toevluchtsoord voor monniken die zich wilden terugtrekken uit het wereldse leven. Op deze foto zie je één van de vele trappen uitgehouwen in de rots, die leidt naar een eenvoudige grotcel met een houten deur voorzien van een kruis. Deze ingangen, deels verborgen in de zandsteen, gaven toegang tot kluizenaarsverblijven en gebedsruimten waar monniken in afzondering leefden — toegewijd aan stilte, gebed en contemplatie. De rotsstructuur is ruw maar functioneel; de treden zijn gevormd door eeuwenlang gebruik en weersinvloeden. Hoewel het complex deels vervallen is, zijn plekken als deze nog steeds in gebruik. Achter deze deur kunnen nog altijd Georgisch-Orthodoxe monniken verblijven, die trouw het sobere leven van hun voorgangers voortzetten. De sfeer is er tijdloos: stilte overheerst, de stenen trappen knarsen zacht onder je voeten, en je voelt hoe de grens tussen het aardse en het spirituele hier vervaagt. Tijdens ons bezoek waren we de enige bezoekers, wat het mogelijk maakte het hele terrein in volledige rust te verkennen. Vanaf het klooster strekt zich een adembenemend uitzicht uit over de stille, eindeloze semi-woestijnvlakten — een plek van verstilling, bezinning en mystiek.

The province of Nan is located in the north of Thailand and borders Laos. It is one of the lesser known provinces of Thailand, but is known for its natural beauty, rich culture and ancient history. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for adventure and relaxation in nature. Road 1256 passes through the mountains of Nan and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.
Thailand is home to several beautiful national parks that showcase the country's diverse natural beauty. The Doi Phu Kha National Park is located near the border between Thailand and Laos. The National Park is also home to the highest mountain peak in the province. The highest point is also called Doi Phu Kha at an altitude of 1,920 meters. If you are traveling to Doi Phu Kha National Park from Nan, I will definitely recommend staying here for a night. Most of the year the weather is nice and the view is stunning early in the morning. A moderate intensity nature trail with a large map detailing the route starts behind the National Park Visitor Center and continues for 2km, ending at a small village. The most beautiful is the viewpoint with a very large 1715 digits representing the height of the point. It takes about 2 hours to complete. However, there is definitely some climbing to do. Please wear trekking boots for the hike. The monsoon is not the best time to do this as there are many leeches and other reptiles that you may not appreciate. The giant fishtail palm is a flowering plant and is native to Laos and Thailand. It can reach 20 meters or more in height and is therefore considered a tree. It is monocarpic, meaning it blooms once' after 10 years and then dies. The inflorescence can reach 6 meters or more.

Het is één van de minder bekende provincies van Thailand, maar staat bekend om zijn natuurlijke schoonheid, rijke cultuur en oude geschiedenis. Het is een geweldige plek om te bezoeken als je op zoek bent naar avontuur en ontspanning in de natuur. De weg 1256 loopt door de bergen van Nan en biedt een adembenemend uitzicht op de omliggende natuur. Bijna de mooiste weg in Thailand, het uitzicht aan de kant van de weg is erg mooi, als je tijdens het regenseizoen gaat, zal de sfeer erg goed zijn. Daarnaast zijn er ook verschillende bergstammen-dorpen langs de weg, waar je de kans hebt om de lokale cultuur en tradities te ervaren. Het Nationaal Park is ook de thuisbasis van, de hoogste bergtop in de provincie. Het hoogste punt wordt ook wel Doi Phu Kha genoemd op een hoogte van 1.920 meter. Als je vanuit Nan naar Doi Phu Kha National Park reist, zal ik je zeker aanraden om hier een nacht te blijven. Het grootste deel van het jaar is het mooi weer en het uitzicht is verbluffend vroeg in de ochtend. Een natuurpad van matige intensiteit met een grote kaart met de details van de route begint achter het bezoekerscentrum van het Nationaal park en gaat 2 km lang door en eindigt bij een klein dorp. De giant fishtail palm is een bloeiende plant en komt voor in Laos en Thailand. Hij kan 20 meter of meer hoog worden en wordt daarom als een boom beschouwd. Het is monocarpisch, wat betekent dat het één keer 'na 10 jaar bloeit en dan sterft. De bloeiwijze kan 6 meter of langer worden.

Bulnes é uma pequena aldeia situada no maciço central dos Picos de Europa, no concelho de Cabrales, nas Astúrias. É um lugar isolado e tranquilo, rodeado de montanhas impressionantes, como o Picu Urriellu ou Naranjo de Bulnes. Para chegar a Bulnes, só há duas opções: ir a pé por um trilho pedregoso que parte de Poncebos, ou usar o funicular subterrâneo que atravessa a rocha em 7 minutos.
What can I even say? Most people don't know this spot exist, or even that there is a faint equine trail on that hillside.
I know.
I come here more than once in the winter time to see the ice develop.
I could sit up in those pines and spend most of the day there just watching the water flow by.
Maybe some day when I can actually take a whole day!

Exploring the back roads and scenic byways as winter turns to spring in Baker County Oregon.
Spent the day watching the seasons change in Eastern Oregon, with big dramatic skies and snowcapped mountain peaks. Spring is starting to arrive on the valley floor but winter is still holding on up in the Elkhorns.

A beautiful New Year’s Day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon with lots of Bighorn Sheep out to help us ring in the new year.
The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

The John Day River and a butte. Way off the beaten path in north central Oregon. A lovely spot that the tourist masses likely never see. After visiting the Painted Hills, we decided to take a road that led through a remote area with only a vague idea of where it ended up. We liked the look of the terrain, so off we went. Turned out to be a stunning drive with fabulous views. Sometimes, the feeling I get when viewing a wonderful landscape is somehow enhanced when I realize that it hasn't been viewed by millions of others...selfish I guess.

Dramatically perched on a towering basalt cliff, the historic village of Castellfollit de la Roca rises above the lush volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa in Catalonia, Spain. Its centuries-old stone houses and distinctive church tower appear almost to grow directly from the rock, creating one of the most remarkable village skylines in Europe.

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it's possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.
The hike to Toti Waterfall leads through a rugged mountain landscape with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. The trail winds along steep slopes and rocky paths, surrounded by dry grasslands and scattered shrubs. Along the way, impressive cliffs and natural formations add a unique character to the scenery. The fresh mountain air and the tranquility of nature make the journey an unforgettable experience. At the end, the spectacular Toti Waterfall awaits as a rewarding sight after the challenging climb.
Nabij het dorp Arsha in de Kazbek regio, ligt de Arsha-waterval, op ongeveer vijf kilometer van Stepantsminda Kazbegi. De wandeling naar de waterval wordt als eenvoudig beschouwd en duurt doorgaans drie tot vier uur. Het pad is ongebaand maar goed begaanbaar, omringd door weelderige weiden en biedt prachtige uitzichten op de omliggende bergen. De waterval is een van de minder bekende natuurlijke attracties in het gebied, wat bijdraagt aan de ongerepte en serene sfeer. Nog iets verder ligt de Toti-waterval, bereikbaar via een steil pad dat bovenlangs de Arsha-waterval loopt. De wandeling naar de Toti-waterval voert door een ruig berglandschap met adembenemende uitzichten op besneeuwde bergtoppen en diepe valleien. Het pad slingert langs steile hellingen en rotsachtige paden, omringd door droge graslanden en verspreide struiken. Onderweg zijn er indrukwekkende kliffen en natuurlijke formaties die het landschap een uniek karakter geven. De frisse berglucht en de rust van de natuur maken de tocht een onvergetelijke ervaring. Aan het einde wacht de spectaculaire Toti-waterval als beloning voor de inspannende klim. Bezoekers kunnen hier genieten van de rust, de natuur en zelfs een verfrissende duik nemen in het heldere water. Voor avonturiers is het mogelijk om verder te trekken naar de nabijgelegen Gergeti-gletsjer, wat de wandeling tot een dagvullende activiteit maakt.

Somdet Phra Maha Muni Si Phu Kha Pagoda is a beautiful gem on top of a majestic mountain that lies at the beginning of the enchanting Doi Phu Kha National Park. This small pagoda is in an idyllic location with a beautiful view of the mountain peaks and a well-tended garden. At an altitude of no less than 1700 meters above sea level, the air is characterized by its freshness and clarity, resulting in a pleasant temperature of about 22 degrees Celsius. Staying in the mountains of Nan province offers travelers a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. It is also a great way to experience the local culture and the hospitality of the Thai people. There are some simple bungalows available in the park. These come in handy during the monsoons when you want a solid roof over your head. These bungalows have the best view. A view of the banana trees, majestic mountains and scenic plantations surrounding Doi Phu Kha National Park. The view of the majestic mountains in the distance is simply stunning and gives a sense of unprecedented freedom and grandeur.
