Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We embarked early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature appears to be in a deep winter slumber. We plan to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness.

The bird's nest fern, also known as nest fern or Asplenium nidus, is a tropical fern species found in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. This fern is known for its large, glossy leaves that form a distinctive funnel shape, similar to a bird's nest. The bird's nest fern usually grows on logs, rocks or other vertical surfaces. It is an epiphytic plant, meaning it has no roots in the soil, but instead attaches itself to another plant or substrate to obtain water and nutrients. At waterfalls, the bird's nest fern can often be found on moist tree stumps and rocks where it thrives in the humid environment. The leaves of the bird's nest fern are large, feathery and bright green in color. They can reach a length of about 1 to 2 meters. The leaf surface is smooth and glossy, and the leaf margins are often slightly wavy or curled. The leaves grow in a rosette-shaped arrangement, with young leaves unfolding from the center of the rosette. It helped that he was battling a fierce wind that slowed him down as he glided past the rocks where I was standing.

Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.
Somdet Phra Maha Muni Si Phu Kha Pagoda is a beautiful gem on top of a majestic mountain that lies at the beginning of the enchanting Doi Phu Kha National Park. We have all taken long car journeys to get to a beautiful tourist attraction. But what if the road is the attraction? In Nan province, a scenic stretch of road called Road 3 is becoming a photogenic destination. Highway 1081 cuts through the beautiful hills of the northern province and connects Bo Kluea district with Santi Suk district. On a fine day, part of the road winds through the green hills under the clear blue sky, and the bend of the road forms the shape of the number three, which earns its nickname. Although the road is attracting more and more visitors, the hills still allow for some traffic breaks for people to see and photograph the road that cuts through the picturesque hill. Cars drift off the road, out of the way of the scenery, allowing well-timed cameramen to capture uninterrupted footage. The government has improved the sidewalks in the area and has worked to keep the area clean. The view and the road are not blocked.

Kazbek is often covered in snow and ice, which adds to the spectacular and mysterious appearance of the region. On clear days, the summit offers beautiful panoramic views of the Caucasus.

The David Gareja Monastery Complex is one of the most unique and historically significant religious sites in Georgia. Located in the Kakheti Kartli region, near the border with Azerbaijan, it is carved into the rocks of a rugged, semi-desert landscape. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by David Garejeli, one of the thirteen Assyrian monks who helped spread Christianity in Georgia. Over the centuries, the complex grew into an important center of religion, art, and scholarship, especially during the medieval period. Despite being repeatedly plundered — by Mongols, Persians, and others — it has always retained its spiritual significance. The complex includes several parts, such as Lavra, the oldest section still inhabited by monks, Udabno, a group of cave monasteries higher up the slopes with centuries-old frescoes, and Bertubani and Chichkhituri, more remote areas with watchtowers, chapels, and hermit cells. All of it is hewn from soft sandstone cliffs, forming a striking fusion of natural form and human devotion. Because the monastery lies on the border, it has become a point of political tension between Georgia and Azerbaijan, as part of the site lies on Azerbaijani territory. From the complex, one can enjoy breathtaking views over the vast, silent semi-desert plains stretching to the horizon. The striking red and pink hues in the ridges are the result of iron-rich clay layers and centuries of erosion, which reveal the layers like a kind of geological pie. These colour contrasts alternate with straw-yellow plains, green shrub cover and dark shadows in the valleys — giving the landscape an almost otherworldly feel. It feels like an area "out of time," ideal for those who love rugged beauty, silence and hidden stories.

Het kloostercomplex bestaat uit Lavra-klooster – het oudste deel, nog steeds bewoond door monniken, Udabno – hogerop gelegen grotkloosters met eeuwenoude muurschilderingen en Bertubani en Chichkhituri – meer afgelegen gedeelten met wachttorens, kapellen en cellen. Het hele complex is uitgehouwen in de zachte rotswanden, wat een indrukwekkende combinatie oplevert van natuurlijke vorm en menselijke devotie. Vanaf het klooster ontvouwt zich een indrukwekkend halfwoestijnachtig landschap, met zachtglooiende heuvels, stoffige paden en eindeloze horizonten. De opvallende rode en roze tinten in de heuvelruggen zijn het resultaat van ijzerrijke kleilagen en eeuwenlange erosie, die de aardlagen zichtbaar maken als een soort geologische taart. Deze kleurcontrasten wisselen af met strogele vlakten, groene struikbedekking en donkere schaduwen in de valleien — wat het landschap een bijna buitenaardse uitstraling geeft. Het voelt als een gebied "buiten de tijd", ideaal voor wie houdt van ruige schoonheid, stilte en verborgen verhalen.

The province of Nan is located in the north of Thailand and borders Laos. It is one of the lesser known provinces of Thailand, but is known for its natural beauty, rich culture and ancient history. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for adventure and relaxation in nature. Road 1256 passes through the mountains of Nan and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.
Thailand is home to several beautiful national parks that showcase the country's diverse natural beauty. The Doi Phu Kha National Park is located near the border between Thailand and Laos. The National Park is also home to the highest mountain peak in the province. The highest point is also called Doi Phu Kha at an altitude of 1,920 meters. If you are traveling to Doi Phu Kha National Park from Nan, I will definitely recommend staying here for a night. Most of the year the weather is nice and the view is stunning early in the morning. A moderate intensity nature trail with a large map detailing the route starts behind the National Park Visitor Center and continues for 2km, ending at a small village. The most beautiful is the viewpoint with a very large 1715 digits representing the height of the point. It takes about 2 hours to complete. However, there is definitely some climbing to do. Please wear trekking boots for the hike. The monsoon is not the best time to do this as there are many leeches and other reptiles that you may not appreciate. The giant fishtail palm is a flowering plant and is native to Laos and Thailand. It can reach 20 meters or more in height and is therefore considered a tree. It is monocarpic, meaning it blooms once' after 10 years and then dies. The inflorescence can reach 6 meters or more.
De provincie Nan is gelegen in het noorden van Thailand en grenst aan Laos. Het is één van de minder bekende provincies van Thailand, maar staat bekend om zijn natuurlijke schoonheid, rijke cultuur en oude geschiedenis. Het is een geweldige plek om te bezoeken als je op zoek bent naar avontuur en ontspanning in de natuur. De weg 1256 loopt door de bergen van Nan en biedt een adembenemend uitzicht op de omliggende natuur. Bijna de mooiste weg in Thailand, het uitzicht aan de kant van de weg is erg mooi, als je tijdens het regenseizoen gaat, zal de sfeer erg goed zijn. Je ziet het groen langs de twee kanten van de weg op de bergkam. Op sommige delen zie je het prachtige uitzicht op rijstvelden over de heuvels. Het kan op sommige delen van de weg overwoekerd zijn. Het Nationaal Park is ook de thuisbasis van, de hoogste bergtop in de provincie. Het hoogste punt wordt ook wel Doi Phu Kha genoemd op een hoogte van 1.920 meter. Als je vanuit Nan naar Doi Phu Kha National Park reist, zal ik je zeker aanraden om hier een nacht te blijven. Het grootste deel van het jaar is het mooi weer en het uitzicht is verbluffend vroeg in de ochtend. Een natuurpad van matige intensiteit met een grote kaart met de details van de route begint achter het bezoekerscentrum van het Nationaal park en gaat 2 km lang door en eindigt bij een klein dorp. De giant fishtail palm is een bloeiende plant en komt voor in Laos en Thailand. Hij kan 20 meter of meer hoog worden en wordt daarom als een boom beschouwd. Het is monocarpisch, wat betekent dat het één keer 'na 10 jaar bloeit en dan sterft. De bloeiwijze kan 6 meter of langer worden.

A beautiful winter day for exploring the winding back roads of the Baker and Keating valleys with spectacular views of the Wallowa and Elk Horn Mountains.
A little early for spring migration still but spotted a few fun birds including lots of Red Tail Hawks, some Horned Larks and a Say's Phoebe.

The region around Mount Kazbek and Stepantsminda is home to several ancient settlements and historical sites, often linked to Georgian legends and medieval architecture. The most famous and iconic site is undoubtedly the Gergeti Trinity Church 14th century. While the church itself was never a settlement, its surroundings served as a sanctuary for local communities for centuries. Around Gergeti Trinity Church, on the slopes of Mount Kazbek, there were once several small settlements and temporary dwellings used by shepherds and monks. These played an important role in both the spiritual and everyday life of the region and were closely connected to the church. The mountain slopes surrounding the church were often used as summer pastures for Georgian shepherds, who brought their sheep and cattle to graze in the alpine meadows. They built temporary stone huts or used natural caves as shelter. These simple dwellings typically consisted of small stone shelters, often without windows. Some huts were partially built underground to retain warmth during the cold months. They were scattered along the mountain trails leading to the church and further up to the Gergeti Glacier.
During wars and invasions—such as those by the Persians, Mongols, and Ottomans—local inhabitants often sought refuge in the mountains. Some settlements were abandoned after conflicts and fell into ruin. While many of these old villages are no longer inhabited, their remains continue to be a fascinating part of the Kazbeg region’s history.
In de regio rond Mount Kazbek en Stepantsminda bevinden zich meerdere oude nederzettingen en historische locaties, vaak verbonden met Georgische legendes en middeleeuwse architectuur. De bekendste en meest iconische plek is zonder twijfel de Gergeti Trinity Church 14e eeuw. Hoewel de kerk zelf geen nederzetting was, fungeerde de omgeving lange tijd als een toevluchtsoord voor lokale gemeenschappen. Rond Gergeti Trinity Church, op de hellingen van Mount Kazbek, lagen vroeger verschillende kleine nederzettingen en tijdelijke verblijven van herders en monniken. Deze speelden een belangrijke rol in zowel het spirituele als het alledaagse leven in de regio en waren vaak nauw verbonden met de kerk. De berghellingen rondom de kerk dienden in de zomer als weidegrond voor Georgische herders, die hier hun schapen en koeien lieten grazen. Ze bouwden tijdelijke stenen hutten of maakten gebruik van natuurlijke grotten als onderdak. Deze eenvoudige onderkomens bestonden vaak uit kleine stenen schuilplaatsen, meestal zonder ramen. Sommige hutten waren gedeeltelijk ondergronds gebouwd om beter bestand te zijn tegen de kou. Ze lagen verspreid langs de bergpaden die leidden naar de kerk en verder naar de Gergeti-gletsjer. Tijdens oorlogen en invasies – zoals die van de Perzen, Mongolen en Ottomanen – zochten de bewoners vaak hun toevlucht in de bergen. Sommige nederzettingen werden na conflicten verlaten en raakten in verval. Hoewel veel van deze oude dorpen niet meer bewoond zijn, blijven hun overblijfselen een intrigerend onderdeel van de geschiedenis van de regio.

What can I even say? Most people don't know this spot exist, or even that there is a faint equine trail on that hillside.
I know.
I come here more than once in the winter time to see the ice develop.
I could sit up in those pines and spend most of the day there just watching the water flow by.
Maybe some day when I can actually take a whole day!

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it's possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.
The hike to Toti Waterfall leads through a rugged mountain landscape with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. The trail winds along steep slopes and rocky paths, surrounded by dry grasslands and scattered shrubs. Along the way, impressive cliffs and natural formations add a unique character to the scenery. The fresh mountain air and the tranquility of nature make the journey an unforgettable experience. At the end, the spectacular Toti Waterfall awaits as a rewarding sight after the challenging climb.
Nabij het dorp Arsha in de Kazbek regio, ligt de Arsha-waterval, op ongeveer vijf kilometer van Stepantsminda Kazbegi. De wandeling naar de waterval wordt als eenvoudig beschouwd en duurt doorgaans drie tot vier uur. Het pad is ongebaand maar goed begaanbaar, omringd door weelderige weiden en biedt prachtige uitzichten op de omliggende bergen. De waterval is een van de minder bekende natuurlijke attracties in het gebied, wat bijdraagt aan de ongerepte en serene sfeer. Nog iets verder ligt de Toti-waterval, bereikbaar via een steil pad dat bovenlangs de Arsha-waterval loopt. De wandeling naar de Toti-waterval voert door een ruig berglandschap met adembenemende uitzichten op besneeuwde bergtoppen en diepe valleien. Het pad slingert langs steile hellingen en rotsachtige paden, omringd door droge graslanden en verspreide struiken. Onderweg zijn er indrukwekkende kliffen en natuurlijke formaties die het landschap een uniek karakter geven. De frisse berglucht en de rust van de natuur maken de tocht een onvergetelijke ervaring. Aan het einde wacht de spectaculaire Toti-waterval als beloning voor de inspannende klim. Bezoekers kunnen hier genieten van de rust, de natuur en zelfs een verfrissende duik nemen in het heldere water. Voor avonturiers is het mogelijk om verder te trekken naar de nabijgelegen Gergeti-gletsjer, wat de wandeling tot een dagvullende activiteit maakt.

Spent the day watching the seasons change in Eastern Oregon, with big dramatic skies and snowcapped mountain peaks. Spring is starting to arrive on the valley floor but winter is still holding on up in the Elkhorns.

We’re on our way to Udabno, tucked between colorful hills and bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. Down in the valley, countless cows graze peacefully in the evening stillness. b>Udabno lies in eastern Georgia — a land of vast emptiness and rolling hills, near the border with Azerbaijan. It offers a striking contrast to the lush, mountainous regions found elsewhere in the country. Here, an expansive semi-desert landscape unfolds, with soft, undulating hills, dusty paths, and endless horizons. The earth glows in shades of yellow, red, and brown, especially when the sun hangs low in the sky, and the silence feels almost tangible. You’ll often have the entire landscape to yourself. The surroundings are perfect for quiet walks, picnics, or simply soaking in the silence. From time to time, shepherds pass by with their flocks, adding to the timeless, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Especially in the early morning or at sunset, when the light turns golden and the hills glow in warm tones, the area feels truly magical.

This tranquil setting offers a sense of solitude and timelessness, with shepherds occasionally passing by and cows grazing in the silence. It's an ideal place for peaceful walks and quiet reflection, where nature feels untouched and almost magical.
We zijn onderweg naar Udabno. verscholen tussen de kleurrijke heuvels en badend in het warme licht van de ondergaande zon. In het dal grazen talloze koeien, vredig in de avondstilte. Udabno ligt in het oosten van Georgië — een wereld van uitgestrekte leegte en golvende heuvels, vlak bij de grens met Azerbeidzjan. Het vormt een intrigerend contrast met de groene, bergachtige streken elders in het land. Hier ontvouwt zich een indrukwekkend halfwoestijnachtig landschap, met zachtglooiende heuvels, stoffige paden en eindeloze horizonten. De aarde kleurt in tinten geel, rood en bruin, vooral wanneer de zon laag aan de hemel staat, en de stilte is bijna tastbaar. Vaak heb je dit landschap helemaal voor jezelf. De omgeving leent zich perfect voor rustige wandelingen, een picknick, of simpelweg het genieten van de stilte. Zo nu en dan trekken herders voorbij met hun kuddes, wat bijdraagt aan de tijdloze, bijna dromerige sfeer. Vooral in de vroege ochtend of bij zonsondergang, wanneer het licht goudkleurig wordt en de heuvels oplichten in warme tinten, voelt deze plek werkelijk magisch aan.

A beautiful New Year’s Day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon with lots of Bighorn Sheep out to help us ring in the new year.
The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

The John Day River and a butte. Way off the beaten path in north central Oregon. A lovely spot that the tourist masses likely never see. After visiting the Painted Hills, we decided to take a road that led through a remote area with only a vague idea of where it ended up. We liked the look of the terrain, so off we went. Turned out to be a stunning drive with fabulous views. Sometimes, the feeling I get when viewing a wonderful landscape is somehow enhanced when I realize that it hasn't been viewed by millions of others...selfish I guess.
