Big Horn Sheep in Burnt River Canyon in Baker County

A beautiful Fall day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon .

The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

We are staying at Hotel Scardus in Popova Šapka, where we are welcomed with a smile and the words, “you are family.” When we mention that we plan to hike toward Anteni, they prepare a lunch package for us at breakfast. Up on the mountain there is nothing — no accommodation, no restaurant — only open space. As we climb higher, the landscape grows wider and quieter. The trail winds through the vast expanse of Šar Mountains National Park, where endless ridgelines fold into one another, layer upon layer. In the distance lies the Jelak viewpoint, a place where the view fully opens and the mountains seem to roll all the way to the horizon. Along the way we encounter only two mountain bikers — a brief moment of movement in an otherwise empty landscape. After they disappear around the bend, the silence returns. No other hikers, no sounds except the wind sweeping across the ridge. Bears, wolves and lynx live here. Most remain unseen, yet their presence makes the landscape feel pure and real. Our food is carefully sealed inside our backpacks — a simple but natural precaution in this wild habitat. The hike itself is technically easy, but the altitude makes itself felt. Popova Šapka already lies at 1,780 meters, and the path climbs steadily higher. It is not about achievement, but about experience: pausing at the Jelak viewpoint, looking out across the mountains, and feeling how small the world below becomes. Up here there is only the mountain, the light, and the space.

High above Popova Šapka in Šar Mountains National Park, North Macedonia, the trail leads toward the Jelak viewpoint, where endless mountain ridges stretch to the horizon. Two mountain bikers briefly pass through the vast, quiet landscape before disappearing into the silence.

The Snostskali River meanders through the Sno Valley, adding a dynamic element to the picture. In autumn, the river is filled with meltwater from the mountains, creating a powerful and lively scene. Along the banks, low shrubs and trees are dressed in warm autumn colours. The valley is a combination of gentle hills and steep slopes, typical of this region of the Caucasus. Here and there, agricultural terraces are visible, which are evidence of centuries of habitation and careful use of the landscape. Sno is a picturesque mountain village near Stepantsminda, a popular base for trekking and mountaineering in the Kazbegi region of northern Georgia. Hiking trails to the Chaukhi Pass attract adventurers. This pass leads to Juta, another mountain village that serves as a starting point for treks to the impressive Chaukhi peaks. The North Chaukhi Mountain towers over the landscape with its height of approximately 3,842 meters. The region is known for its rugged, untouched nature and breathtaking views of the Caucasus. The snow-capped peaks of the North Chaukhi Mountain form a beautiful contrast with the warm tones of the valley. Sno and its surroundings are distinguished by dramatic landscapes, medieval fortresses and the proximity of the imposing Kazbek Mountain. The area is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers looking for adventure and peace in nature.

The North Chaukhi Mountain stands at approximately 3,842 meters. This impressive peak is part of the Chaukhi Range in the Greater Caucasus, located in Georgia's Kazbegi district. Hikes around the Chaukhi Pass, situated at an elevation of about 3,338 meters, are popular among adventurers exploring the region. The mountain serves as a stunning backdrop to the valleys surrounding Sno and Juta. In the foreground, the Snostskali River winds through the valley, contributing to the area's breathtaking natural landscape.

Sighnagh, perched on a hilltop in Georgia’s Kakheti region, feels like stepping back in time. Known as the “City of Love,” it’s famous for its romantic charm and the unique tradition that couples can marry here any time of the day at the 24-hour open city hall. In this photo, you see one of the historic city gates, part of the 18th-century walls built under King Erekle II to protect the town from invasions. Today, visitors can walk along sections of these walls and take in breathtaking views of the Alazani Valley and the distant Caucasus Mountains. Rising behind the fortified wall is the Church of St. Stephen, its tall bell tower standing like a silent guardian over the town. The narrow cobblestone streets, the warm hues of the rooftops, and the tranquil atmosphere give Sighnaghi a timeless soul, where history, faith, and everyday life blend seamlessly. This scene captures the quiet elegance of a place that has preserved its spirit, surrounded by vineyards and centuries-old traditions.

Located in the north of Thailand and near the border of Laos, the rice terraces in Nan province are a breathtaking landscape that enchants visitors. These terraces are one of Thailand's best-kept secrets, boasting an untouched beauty that is often overlooked by tourists. The Nan Rice Terraces are known for their spectacular views, with tiered fields stretching over rolling hills and mountains. They are carefully laid out by the local farmers, who have mastered this technique of terrace construction for centuries. The terraces follow the natural contours of the landscape and make optimal use of the available water resources, resulting in an efficient and sustainable agricultural system. During the rainy season, the terraces are filled with water, creating a beautiful reflection of the surrounding green hills and the clear blue of the sky. As the rice season progresses, the landscape transforms into a golden sea of paddy fields stretching as far as the eye can see. The rice terraces are often surrounded by traditional villages, where the inhabitants maintain their age-old traditions and crafts. You can meet the locals, experience their hospitality and learn more about their farming practices.

Nye Beach in Newport, Oregon. Fun little beach with some shops and dining. It was “COVID Quiet” like many other places we stopped. We sat on a bench at the turnaround just above the beach and enjoyed the view. Easy parking, easy access to the beach. And the few people we saw were friendly. It was a great stop.

A beautiful winter day exploring the byways and back roads of Baker County

A beautiful winter day exploring Baker County Oregon including stops to explore Beaver Creek, and the Powder River along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway. Some of the first real snow of the season this week on the valley floor and a lot more in the mountains.

Perched on rugged rocks in the heart of Mercantour National Park, this mountain goat stands watch over the valley below. Its presence adds life and character to the dramatic alpine landscape, where jagged peaks rise into the mist and sunlight dances across stone and grass. A fleeting moment of connection with the wild—graceful, resilient, and timeless.

Stobi was the final stop of our unforgettable journey through North Macedonia. By the time we reached this remarkable archaeological site, our rental car had become almost unrecognizable, covered in a thick layer of dust after hundreds of kilometres on mountain roads, winding valleys, and even a few unpaved tracks. It seemed like the perfect souvenir of an incredible road trip. During our travels we explored the lively streets of Skopje, wandered through the ancient churches and lakeside atmosphere of Ohrid, hiked high into the Šar Mountains, discovered colourful mosques, Ottoman towns, dramatic canyons, and, finally, the Roman city of Stobi. Everywhere we went we were welcomed by friendly people, breathtaking landscapes, and a fascinating mix of cultures shaped by Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Balkan history. North Macedonia exceeded all our expectations. The country combines spectacular mountain scenery with a rich history, excellent local cuisine, and genuinely warm hospitality. Despite being a candidate for European Union membership, it is also one of the most affordable travel destinations in Europe. Comfortable hotels, delicious meals, and entrance fees to many attractions are remarkably inexpensive, making it possible to enjoy an unforgettable road trip without spending a fortune. This unique combination of stunning landscapes, fascinating history, welcoming people, and outstanding value makes North Macedonia one of the most rewarding destinations we have visited in Europe. As we parked our dusty rental car beside the sign of ancient Stobi, we realized that although our journey had come to an end, the memories of this beautiful country would stay with us for a very long time.

Our dust-covered rental car at the entrance of Stobi, marking the final stop of an unforgettable journey through the history, landscapes, and hospitality of North Macedonia. Take a look at my photo album of North Macedonia.

In front of a restaurant in the picturesque town of Sighnaghi stands a colorful, weathered car. On its roof rests a qvevri, the large clay vessel that symbolizes Georgia’s ancient winemaking tradition. Painted in bright colors with the town’s name, the car instantly catches the eye of passersby and invites them to step inside. The surroundings of Sighnaghi belong to Kakheti, Georgia’s most famous wine region. Wine has been made here for over 8,000 years, earning the country the title “the cradle of winemaking.” Even today, wine is still produced in the traditional way using qvevris, buried underground. Grapes — including skins and seeds — ferment and mature for months, creating unique, full-bodied flavors and an amber hue for white wines. The restaurant marked by this car honors that centuries-old tradition with the qvevri on its roof. Visitors strolling through Sighnaghi’s cobblestone streets are reminded of Kakheti’srich wine culture. Inside, you can taste local wines like Saperavi and Rkatsiteli, paired with traditional dishes and the warm hospitality Georgia is known for. Thus, the car is not just an eye-catcher but a visual invitation to discover the flavors and stories of Sighnaghi — a town where history, gastronomy, and wine come together.

In front of a cozy restaurant in Sighnaghi, this colorful vintage car proudly displays the town’s name. On its roof sits a qvevri, the traditional clay vessel used for Georgian winemaking for over 8,000 years. It’s a playful nod to the rich wine heritage of Kakheti, where ancient traditions still live on. Visitors are invited to step inside, taste Saperavi or Rkatsiteli, and experience the unique blend of history, wine, and warm Georgian hospitality.

Big Horn Sheep in Burnt River Canyon in Baker County

A beautiful New Year’s Day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon with lots of Bighorn Sheep out to help us ring in the new year.

We are now on our way back to Popova Šapka. In the mountains, “going down” often means first climbing up again. The ridge rolls beneath our feet, rising and falling, as if the landscape wants to remind us once more that altitude is always relative. In the photo, Kanitha walks slightly ahead of me, small against the vast backdrop of the Šar massif. The broad mountain slopes are softly tinted in autumn colors — ochre, rust-brown, and muted green — while clouds drift slowly over the peaks. Behind the ridge, just out of sight, lies Popova Šapka. It seems close, yet in the mountains distance feels different. What is hidden behind a crest can easily mean another two hours of walking. The return has a different atmosphere. Less anticipation, more quiet reflection. The effort is already in our legs, the pace slower now. We talk less and look more. From time to time, we turn around for one last glance at the peaks rising boldly against the horizon. Up here, there is no hurry. Only the rhythm of footsteps in the grass, the wind along the ridge, and the realization that in the mountains you never simply “descend” — you move with the landscape. And that is precisely what makes it so beautiful.

On our way back to Popova Šapka, we walk along a rolling ridge in the Šar Mountains of North Macedonia. Behind the hills lies the ski village, hidden from view, while the vast autumn landscape stretches endlessly around us. Kanitha appears small against the sweeping peaks — a quiet moment high above the valleys, where the mountains set the rhythm of the journey.

End of the trail at Schwabacher Landing, Jackson Hole, Wyoming....

The "road" leading into Canyon de Chelly. This road is only accessed by four wheel drive vehicles and it is on Native American land, so you must go through their tour offices. The driver turned a corner and I saw this view and yelled out "stop"...think I scared the driver a little :). I loved the wildflowers, the dirt road, the peak of canyon to come, and that incredible sky!

The David Gareja Monastery complex lies in a remote and isolated part of the rugged, semi-desert landscape of eastern Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan. The surroundings are marked by dry hills, barren plains, and steep rock formations — far removed from any village or town. This very secluded location enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the site, which has served for centuries as a retreat for monks seeking to withdraw from the world. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by the Syrian monk David Garejeli and is partially carved into the soft sandstone cliffs. On the left side of the photo, you can see the dramatic, sloping rock wall with carved cells, chapels, and caves that once served as living and prayer quarters for the monks. Some of them are still adorned with delicate, centuries-old frescoes. On the right, the fortified walls and round watchtowers can be seen — silent witnesses to the monastery’s defensive function throughout history. In the center, a green, open courtyard connects nature and architecture in a harmonious way. Beyond its historical and architectural value, David Gareja is still a living religious site. Today, it is home to Georgian Orthodox monks who lead a modest, secluded life devoted to prayer, study, and the maintenance of the monastery. Their presence reminds us that David Gareja is not merely a ruin, but an active spiritual community. Their daily routines continue almost undisturbed — in silence, in stone, and in harmony with the land. During our visit, we were the only visitors, allowing us to explore the entire site in complete peace. From the monastery, there is a breathtaking view over the silent, endless semi-desert plains — a place of stillness, reflection, and mysticism.

Hidden in Georgia’s remote semi-desert near the Azerbaijani border, the David Gareja Monastery is a centuries-old complex carved into sandstone cliffs. Still home to Orthodox monks, it blends ancient history with quiet spiritual life. Surrounded by stark, rugged landscapes, the site offers solitude, breathtaking views, and a deep sense of timelessness.

Ban Sala are a notable geological landmarks in Nan Province, located in northern Thailand. It is also known as the "Stone Pillars of Nan" or "Clay Pagoda" in English. These sites consist of impressive limestone pillars that rise from the ground, similar to the hoodoos in Bryce Canyon in the United States. These striking formations are the result of millions of years of erosion by rainwater and wind, which has worn away the softer layers of rock and left behind the harder layers that make up the pillars. What makes these places truly unique is the combination of the scenery and scenic surroundings of Nan. The green valleys and vast rice paddies add an extra layer of beauty to the experience. Visitors can explore the area via hiking trails and viewing platforms, where they can take in breathtaking views of the jagged pillars and surrounding landscape. It is a great place to enjoy the peace and serenity of nature and take unique photos.

Devil's Valley lies high in the Caucasus Mountains, near the Jvari Pass. The valley is known for its raw beauty: steep mountains, deep gorges, fast-flowing rivers, and ancient watchtowers. In the past, it was a strategically important area, but also dangerous and difficult to traverse. It earned the nickname “Valley of the Devils” because invaders would often get lost, be ambushed, or simply never return—partly due to the fierce defense by the local population. Few tourists venture here; it feels like a hidden world. Especially outside the summer season, the valley is hard to access. Hikers and off-road adventurers love this kind of terrain, but it’s far from a typical day trip. One of the natural highlights of the area is the Eretos Waterfall. Cascading down a rocky cliff into a narrow gorge, the waterfall is tucked away between forested slopes. The sound of the falling water echoes through the valley, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of the region. It’s a place where nature takes center stage: wild, untouched, and barely marked by human presence. Visiting the waterfall feels like a reward for those willing to explore this rugged landscape.

Devil's Valley lies high in the Caucasus Mountains. The region is dramatic and mountainous, with panoramic views and an untamed character. It lies along the famous Georgian Military Highway, an ancient route that connects Tbilisi with Russia via the Jvari Pass. The landscape displays a mesmerizing contrast between snow-capped peaks and the golden autumn slopes, a characteristic feature of the region in late autumn. The deep blue sky emphasize the grandeur of the Caucasus, making this a truly awe-inspiring sight. Kanitha enjoying a view on the valley, with the impressive Caucasus mountains in the background.

The Archaeological Park of Stobi is one of the most important archaeological sites in North Macedonia. Situated at the crossroads of major Roman trade routes, Stobi flourished between the 1st century BC and the 6th century AD. Today, its extensive ruins reveal the city's rich Roman and early Christian heritage through impressive basilicas, elegant mosaics, public buildings, and ancient streets. This photograph shows the magnificent Central Basilica, built during the mid-5th century AD on the remains of an earlier synagogue. Archaeological excavations beneath the church uncovered a small cruciform crypt, believed to have housed a sacred relic. The basilica itself was decorated with richly coloured mosaics, painted walls, and stucco ornamentation, making it one of the city's most important religious buildings during Late Antiquity. The surviving mosaic floor still displays remarkable craftsmanship, with elegant geometric designs and symbolic motifs that have endured for more than fifteen centuries. Walking through these peaceful ruins, it is easy to imagine the thriving community that once gathered here. During our visit, the archaeological park was almost completely deserted, allowing us to experience one of North Macedonia's greatest archaeological treasures in complete tranquillity.

The beautifully preserved mosaic floor of the 5th-century Central Basilica in Stobi, built on the foundations of an earlier synagogue.

Farmers in the Kazbegi region in Georgia lead a simple yet challenging life. The climate is harsh, with severe winters and short summers. Due to the rocky soil and mountainous terrain, agriculture is difficult, so most farmers focus on livestock breeding, mainly sheep and cattle. They also cultivate cold-resistant crops such as potatoes and barley. Many locals combine traditional farming with tourism. With the growing interest in the Kazbegi region, some farmers rent out rooms to travelers or sell local products such as honey, cheese, and handmade woolen clothing. Near the farmhouse, close to the village of Arsha, lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further lies the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it is possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.

The St. Gabriel the Archangel Church is located in Stepantsminda, a picturesque village in northern Georgia, at the foot of the imposing Mount Kazbek. The church is not only a historical monument, but also a very active place of worship for the locals, providing a spiritual refuge for the faithful who gather here for services, prayers and religious celebrations. The church features traditional Georgian Orthodox architecture, with stone walls and a red roof, typical of many churches in the region. The small cemetery next to it adds to the historical and spiritual significance of the place, where generations of locals have found their final resting place. Stepantsminda is located at an altitude of approximately 1,750 metres and is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks and vast valleys. The village is an important junction on the Georgian Military Highway, the historic trade route connecting Georgia with Russia. Despite its increasing popularity among travellers, Stepantsminda has managed to retain its authentic and peaceful character. The area is also popular with hikers and mountaineers looking for adventurous routes in the Caucasus.

In the shadow of the imposing Greater Caucasus, the St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Stepantsminda stands as both a religious center and a symbol of the community’s resilience and faith.

Udabno is located in eastern Georgia — a world of vast emptiness and rolling hills, close to the border with Azerbaijan, offering a fascinating contrast to the green, mountainous regions of the country. Here, a sprawling semi-desert landscape unfolds, with colorful hills, dusty trails, and endless horizons. The earth shines in shades of yellow, red, and brown, especially when the sun hangs low in the sky, and the silence feels almost tangible. Not far from the village of Udabno lies Jikurebi Lake, a hidden gem tucked away in this rugged landscape. The Lake is a natural lake and the water level changes depending on the season. This small, peaceful lake is surrounded by gently rolling semi-desert hills and vast open plains. Thanks to its remote location, Jikurebi Lake feels incredibly serene — you’ll often have the whole place to yourself. The calm waters mirror the endless sky, and the area is perfect for quiet walks, picnics, or simply soaking up the silence. Occasionally, shepherds pass by with their flocks, adding to the timeless, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Especially in the early morning or at sunset, when the light turns golden and the hills glow with warm colors, Jikurebi Lake feels truly magical.

Udabno lies in eastern Georgia, where vast, rolling hills meet endless skies near the Azerbaijan border. The landscape here is a colorful tapestry of semi-desert terrain, with dusty trails and a silence that feels almost sacred. Hidden among these hills is Jikurebi Lake — a peaceful, remote spot perfect for quiet walks and reflection. The still water mirrors the sky, and sometimes shepherds pass by with their flocks, adding to the timeless beauty. At sunrise and sunset, when the hills glow in soft golds and reds, the lake feels nothing short of magical.
