Nye Beach in Newport, Oregon. Fun little beach with some shops and dining. It was “COVID Quiet” like many other places we stopped. We sat on a bench at the turnaround just above the beach and enjoyed the view. Easy parking, easy access to the beach. And the few people we saw were friendly. It was a great stop.

Devil's Valley lies high in the Caucasus Mountains, near the Jvari Pass. The valley is known for its raw beauty: steep mountains, deep gorges, fast-flowing rivers, and ancient watchtowers. In the past, it was a strategically important area, but also dangerous and difficult to traverse. It earned the nickname “Valley of the Devils” because invaders would often get lost, be ambushed, or simply never return—partly due to the fierce defense by the local population. Few tourists venture here; it feels like a hidden world. Especially outside the summer season, the valley is hard to access. Hikers and off-road adventurers love this kind of terrain, but it’s far from a typical day trip. One of the natural highlights of the area is the Eretos Waterfall. Cascading down a rocky cliff into a narrow gorge, the waterfall is tucked away between forested slopes. The sound of the falling water echoes through the valley, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of the region. It’s a place where nature takes center stage: wild, untouched, and barely marked by human presence. Visiting the waterfall feels like a reward for those willing to explore this rugged landscape.

De Devil's Valley ligt in de bergen van de Kaukasus, aan de Jvari-pas. De vallei staat bekend om haar ruige schoonheid: steile bergen, diepe kloven, snelstromende rivieren en eeuwenoude wachttorens. Ooit was dit een strategisch belangrijk gebied, maar ook gevaarlijk en moeilijk begaanbaar. De vallei kreeg de bijnaam “Valley of the Devils”, omdat indringers er vaak verdwaalden, werden aangevallen of simpelweg nooit meer terugkeerden — deels vanwege de lokale bevolking die haar land fel verdedigde.

We are back in the inhabited world of Popova Šapka. After hours of open ridges and mountain silence, the village unfolds below us. Still, there’s one final descent before we truly arrive. In the middle of the image, the mosque stands out clearly, its slender minaret rising above the houses. To the right, opposite it, lies The Church of St. Naum — two places of worship shaping the skyline of this mountain village. On the left side of the frame, we can see our hotel: the white building with brown details and a grey roof — Hotel Scardus. It sits quietly among the trees, almost within reach. We leave the trail behind and head straight down through the grass. The mountains are now at our backs, the village drawing closer with every step. And waiting for us below? Something simple and well deserved: a cold beer on the terrace of Hotel Scardus.

We zijn weer terug in de bewoonde wereld van Popova Šapka. Na uren tussen gras, kammen en stilte ligt het bergdorp weer voor ons uitgespreid. Toch moeten we nog even afdalen voordat we er echt zijn. Midden in het beeld is de moskee duidelijk zichtbaar, met haar slanke minaret als herkenningspunt in het dorp. Rechts daarvan, aan de overzijde, ligt The Church of St. Naum — twee geloofshuizen die hier samen het silhouet van Popova Šapka bepalen. Links in beeld zien we ons hotel: het wit met bruine gebouw met het grijze dak — Hotel Scardus. Het ligt bijna uitnodigend tussen de bomen, alsof het ons al ziet aankomen. We laten het pad voor wat het is en dalen rechtstreeks af door het gras. De bergen liggen achter ons, het dorp komt snel dichterbij. En beneden wacht iets eenvoudigs maar perfect na zo’n dag: een koud pilsje op het terras van Hotel Scardus.

The David Gareja Monastery complex lies in a remote and isolated part of the rugged, semi-desert landscape of eastern Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan. The surroundings are marked by dry hills, barren plains, and steep rock formations — far removed from any village or town. This very secluded location enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the site, which has served for centuries as a retreat for monks seeking to withdraw from the world. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by the Syrian monk David Garejeli and is partially carved into the soft sandstone cliffs. On the left side of the photo, you can see the dramatic, sloping rock wall with carved cells, chapels, and caves that once served as living and prayer quarters for the monks. Some of them are still adorned with delicate, centuries-old frescoes. On the right, the fortified walls and round watchtowers can be seen — silent witnesses to the monastery’s defensive function throughout history. In the center, a green, open courtyard connects nature and architecture in a harmonious way. Beyond its historical and architectural value, David Gareja is still a living religious site. Today, it is home to Georgian Orthodox monks who lead a modest, secluded life devoted to prayer, study, and the maintenance of the monastery. Their presence reminds us that David Gareja is not merely a ruin, but an active spiritual community. Their daily routines continue almost undisturbed — in silence, in stone, and in harmony with the land. During our visit, we were the only visitors, allowing us to explore the entire site in complete peace. From the monastery, there is a breathtaking view over the silent, endless semi-desert plains — a place of stillness, reflection, and mysticism.

Het David Gareja-kloostercomplex ligt afgelegen en geïsoleerd in het ruige, halfwoestijnachtige landschap van Oost-Georgië, vlak bij de grens met Azerbeidzjan. De omgeving wordt gekenmerkt door droge heuvels, kale vlaktes en steile rotspartijen — ver verwijderd van dorpen of steden. Juist deze verlaten ligging versterkt de spirituele sfeer van de plek, die eeuwenlang een toevluchtsoord is geweest voor monniken die zich wilden terugtrekken uit de wereld. Het klooster werd in de 6e eeuw gesticht door de Syrische monnik David Garejeli en is deels uitgehouwen in de zachte zandsteenrotsen. Links op de foto zie je de spectaculaire, schuin oplopende rotswand, vol uitgehouwen cellen, kapellen en grotten die ooit dienden als woon- en gebedsruimten voor monniken. Rechts zijn de versterkte muren en ronde wachttorens zichtbaar — stille getuigen van de verdedigingsfunctie die het complex door de eeuwen heen ook heeft vervuld. In het midden ligt een groen, open binnenplein dat op harmonieuze wijze natuur en architectuur met elkaar verbindt. Naast zijn historische en architectonische waarde is David Gareja nog altijd een levendige religieuze plek. Er wonen vandaag de dag nog steeds Georgisch-Orthodoxe monniken, die er een teruggetrokken en sober leven leiden, toegewijd aan gebed, studie en het onderhoud van het klooster. Hun aanwezigheid onderstreept dat David Gareja geen verlaten ruïne is, maar een actieve spirituele gemeenschap. Hun dagelijkse rituelen gaan haast ongestoord verder — in stilte, in steen, en in verbondenheid met de natuur. Tijdens ons bezoek waren we de enige bezoekers, wat het mogelijk maakte het hele terrein in volledige rust te verkennen. Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. Our plan is to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber. .

A beautiful New Year’s Day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon with lots of Bighorn Sheep out to help us ring in the new year.
The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

We heard him circling above as he/she squeaked out their call. Charlie knows he is bite sized for birds of prey and ran to hide under my legs.
We retreated to another pine and simply watched for about 20 minutes. I held Charlie in my lap and we listened the the Eagle chirp and chatter.
Eventually the Eagle took off. Its wings made a thumping noise on take off and then we watched it soar over the river and head north out of our area.
In 1970, seeing a Bald Eagle was a rarity it was estimated that only about 400 breeding pairs were left in the US.
I was starting High School at that time.
Today I sat and watched one in the pines above us or 20 minutes.
Just.

You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.

Asian golden cat: This medium-sized feline is rare and elusive. They have a golden coat and inhabit the dense forests of Doi Phu Kha National Park.
7. Birds: The park is home to a variety of bird species, including the red-necked francolin, green peafowl, white-winged duck, Indian cormorant, great hornbill, and many others. This is just a small selection of the animals that can be found in Doi Phu Kha National Park. The park harbors a rich diversity of species and is an important wildlife refuge in Thailand.

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. The David Gareja Monastery complex is one of the most impressive religious and historical sites in Georgia. Located in a remote, semi-desert region along the border with Azerbaijan, it is carved into the soft sandstone slopes of the surrounding hills. The complex was founded in the 6th century by David Garejeli, one of the thirteen Assyrian monks who helped spread Christianity in Georgia. Over the centuries, it grew into a major center of faith, art, and learning. The church shown in the photo is one of the central buildings of the Lavra Monastery, the oldest part of the David Gareja complex. It is constructed from rough-hewn stone and brick, following the characteristic style of medieval Georgian architecture. The bell tower with double arches and the stone spire topped with an Orthodox cross give the church its iconic silhouette. The arched forms above the door and windows reflect Byzantine influences, while the partial integration of the building into the rock wall is typical for many structures in the complex. Despite repeated plundering by Mongols, Persians, and later neglect during Soviet rule, the church has retained both its religious function and its peaceful atmosphere. The Lavra Monastery is still active and inhabited by monks. During our visit, we were the only guests, which allowed us to explore the entire complex in quiet reflection. From the monastery, you can enjoy breathtaking views across the vast, silent semi-desert plains.

The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

The bird's nest fern, also known as nest fern or Asplenium nidus, is a tropical fern species found in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. This fern is known for its large, glossy leaves that form a distinctive funnel shape, similar to a bird's nest. The bird's nest fern usually grows on logs, rocks or other vertical surfaces. It is an epiphytic plant, meaning it has no roots in the soil, but instead attaches itself to another plant or substrate to obtain water and nutrients. At waterfalls, the bird's nest fern can often be found on moist tree stumps and rocks where it thrives in the humid environment. The leaves of the bird's nest fern are large, feathery and bright green in color. They can reach a length of about 1 to 2 meters. The leaf surface is smooth and glossy, and the leaf margins are often slightly wavy or curled. The leaves grow in a rosette-shaped arrangement, with young leaves unfolding from the center of the rosette. Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We embarked early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature appears to be in a deep winter slumber. We plan to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness.

We have all taken long car journeys to get to a beautiful tourist attraction. But what if the road is the attraction? In Nan province, a scenic stretch of road called Road 3 is becoming a photogenic destination. Highway 1081 cuts through the beautiful hills of the northern province and connects Bo Kluea district with Santi Suk district. On a fine day, part of the road winds through the green hills under the clear blue sky, and the bend of the road forms the shape of the number three, which earns its nickname. Although the road is attracting more and more visitors, the hills still allow for some traffic breaks for people to see and photograph the road that cuts through the picturesque hill. Cars drift off the road, out of the way of the scenery, allowing well-timed cameramen to capture uninterrupted footage. The government has improved the sidewalks in the area and has worked to keep the area clean. The view and the road are not blocked.
De provincie Nan is gelegen in het noorden van Thailand en grenst aan Laos. Het is één van de minder bekende provincies van Thailand, maar staat bekend om zijn natuurlijke schoonheid, rijke cultuur en oude geschiedenis. Het is een geweldige plek om te bezoeken als je op zoek bent naar avontuur en ontspanning in de natuur. De weg 1081 loopt door de bergen van Nan en biedt een adembenemend uitzicht op de omliggende natuur. Bijna de mooiste weg in Thailand, het uitzicht aan de kant van de weg is erg mooi, als je tijdens het regenseizoen gaat, zal de sfeer erg goed zijn. Je ziet het groen langs de twee kanten van de weg op de bergkam. Op sommige delen zie je het prachtige uitzicht op rijstvelden over de heuvels. Het kan op sommige delen van de weg overwoekerd zijn. We hebben allemaal lange autoritten gemaakt om bij een mooie toeristische attractie te komen. Maar wat als de weg de attractie is? In de provincie Nan is een schilderachtig stuk weg genaamd Road 3 een fotogenieke bestemming aan het worden. Snelweg 1081 doorsnijdt de prachtige heuvels van de noordelijke provincie en verbindt het district Bo Kluea met het district Santi Suk. Op een mooie dag slingert een deel van de weg door de groene heuvels onder de helderblauwe lucht, en de bocht van de weg vormt de vorm van het nummer drie, wat zijn bijnaam verdient. Hoewel de weg steeds meer bezoekers trekt, laten de heuvels nog steeds wat verkeerspauzes toe zodat mensen de weg die door de pittoreske heuvel snijdt, kunnen zien en fotograferen. Auto's raken van de weg af, uit de weg van het landschap, zodat goed getimede cameramensen ononderbroken beelden kunnen maken. De overheid heeft de trottoirs in het gebied verbeterd en heeft gewerkt om het gebied schoon te houden. Het uitzicht en de weg zijn niet geblokkeerd.

Somdet Phra Maha Muni Si Phu Kha Pagoda is a beautiful gem on top of a majestic mountain that lies at the beginning of the enchanting Doi Phu Kha National Park.
