Rosie’s Diner in Rockford, Michigan – the original queen of diners and the most famous diner in the world. Seen across America for decades, Rosie’s remains an authentic and original icon of the American road. The star of much-loved Bounty paper towel commercials with Nancy Walker as Rosie the Waitress, Rosie’s Diner is a familiar image in well-known photographs, familiar posters and on television. Most recently, Rosie’s is featured on the inaugural episode of Food Network’s new show, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

We didn't know what we did

We were just on the road

Exterior view of Saint Mary Magdalene Orthodox Church, built in 1901, located in Chania, on the island of Crete, Greece.

The church is built according to the Russian Orthodox church architecture, which sets it apart from any other church in Chania city.

Its history begins in 1898 when the Ottoman occupation of Crete ended and the island was declared an autonomous state. Then, Prince George of Greece was appointed High Commissioner of the Cretan State and came to Chania. After his sister Mary paid him an official visit, her husband, the Grand Duke of Russia George Mikhailovich, decided to commemorate the event for political reasons. He donated 10,000 rubles for the construction of a church, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.

It is known locally as the Church of St Nicholas the Rich because it was partly funded by donations from wealthy benefactors, including shipowners living abroad, and to distinguish it from the Church of St Nicholas the Poor in Ano Syros.

Century Farms and Beavers Along The Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County Oregon

A few wintery photos from our recent travels along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County.

Spent some time exploring the Elkhorn Scenic Byway including a few back roads looking at Century Farms and some wildlife including a beaver along the way along the way.

This scenic byway circles through the Elkhorn mountains of Northeast Oregon beginning and ending in Baker City and passing through small towns like Sumpter, Granite, and Haines. The drive is incredibly scenic with wide open panoramic views across the Baker valley, high alpine forests, and following pristine rivers and creeks along the way. In the winter Anthony Lakes is home to Oregon's highest base elevation ski resort. In the summer the pristine alpine lake is a fishing and camping destination.

For more information about the Elkhorn Scenic Byway or other Baker County backroads and Scenic byways visit Baker County Tourism’s website www.basecampbaker.com

Havilah and Bodfish, Kern County, California. Downtown hotel. Corlew's Silver City - manufactured ghost town. Old buildings from all over the Kern Valley have been hauled in and re-arranged in the form of an old western town.

Corlew's Silver City, Bodfish, Kern County, California. Corlew's Silver City is a not a real ghost town, but a manufactured one. In the sixties and seventies, Dave and Arvilla Mills found several old, historic buildings from all over the Kern Valley region, hauled them to Bodfish and rearranged them to re-create the old western town of Silver City.

While the town itself is not real, nearly all of the buildings are authentic. Brought in from all over the area, from Keyesville to Isabella, from Whiskey Flat to Kernvale - many old towns and mining camps that are just a faded memory, or lost under the waters of nearby Lake Isabella. The Corlew family purchased the attraction and re-opened it in 1992, and have spent many hours restoring the buildings to an authentic state. Some of the buildings include the Isabella Jail, church, hotel, post office, saloon, and more.

Corlew's Silver City is waaaay off the beaten path, tucked away in the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, roughly an hour northeast of Bakersfield, a few miles from Lake Isabella. It's a bit of a faded tourist stop, a little worse for wear from the ravages of time - but that's partly by design, because the buildings are meant to be preserved in a state of 'arrested decay'. A bit of tourist-trap kitsch with the creepy mannequin displays, but still worth the visit for old western buffs and history enthusiasts.

The Whitewater Preserve is 2,826 acres surrounded by the Bureau of Land Management San Gorgonio Wilderness and includes the year-round Whitewater River. Rich riparian habitat hosts the endangered Southwest willow flycatcher and Bell's vireo and provides the opportunity to see migrating summer tanagers and vermilion flycatchers. The canyon has a robust population of bighorn sheep, deer and bear and is an important wildlife corridor between the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains. The Wildlands Conservancy purchased an additional 3,200 acres in the Whitewater corridor that was donated to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). These donated lands include sand dunes that are home to the endangered fringe-toed lizard at Windy Point at the confluence of the Whitewater and San Gorgonio Rivers.

The Conservancy's acquisitions include 1,280 acres that were subdivided into 40 acre parcels deep inside the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Roads to the subdivision have been removed and the integrity of the wilderness has been restored. The Conservancy also purchased the BLM range allotment as a means to retire all cattle grazing in the Whitewater Watershed. Over the past ten years, the Whitewater River has transformed from black water cattle wallows to crystal clear waters. Other restoration efforts involved removing 19 neglected houses and commercial structures at the old trout farm along with diseased non-native elm trees. These impacted lands have been restored with native sycamores, cottonwoods, flowering ash, alders, narrow-leaved willows, native shrubs and substantial wetlands.

Visitor Opportunities

The Whitewater Trout Farm's historic building has been transformed into a visitor facility and ranger station. Other visitor facilities include individual and group picnic areas and campgrounds that are overshadowed by steep vertical cliffs where bighorn sheep are often spotted. There is a trailhead leading to the Pacific Crest Trail and paver paths around the ponds for the elderly. Fishing is limited to organized catch and release programs for kids in which all equipment is provided.

The preserve is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Days, or in the event of dangerous weather conditions. Permits for preserve camping, backcountry trip parking, and afterhours hiking are available at the preserve ranger station during open hours, in person or by phone. For additional information or to make a reservation for an interpretive program or the campground, call the preserve at 760.325.7222.

Docent Training

Docents are volunteers who help visitors learn about the preserve and the natural world. The word docent comes from the Latin word docere, meaning “to teach.” Docents teach or interpret the natural world for student groups and families in outdoor education programs and they give walk-in visitors information about how best to enjoy their visits to the preserve.

The Fall Docent Class begins on Oct. 1st, continuing every Tuesday morning from 9 am through 12:30 pm through Nov. 26th. Help us meet our mission to provide exemplary environmental education to students and families.

To find out more about how to become a docent, email Caroline Conway, Education Director of the Desert Preserves at caroline.c@twc-ca.org or 760.369.7105.

Gideros is mentioned in the text by Homeros. When he tells about the war of Troy in his famous work Ilieda, he also touches on the kingdom of Paphlagonia. He mentions that this kingdom covers the cities of Parthenios (Bartin), Sesamos (Amasra), Kromna (Kurucasile), Kytoros (Gideros) and Aigialos (Cide).

Gideros Bay is reported to be a place for sea pirates to hide in the past.
