We were glad to find the floor of the canyon was mostly shallow gravel without any sections of fine sand or mud.

Ruggedly beautiful Byous Butte through a frame of Palo Verde trees.

We would love to come back to this area when the saguaros are in bloom.

On this 105 degree day we were glad to find it was nearly 10 degrees cooler inside the Box.

All the new growth from the heavy rains was on display on the flanks of Fourth of July Butte.

If you notice where the water flows around the large boulder near bottom center of this shot, you can almost make out the streambed-colored boulder to its upper left. We had to squeeze between the two.

Poor lighting aside, I thought the vivid contrast between where the shadows end and the light begins made this more interesting.

I try to get a shot of the Jeep on the trail whenever we go off-road. I thought this shot also added some sense of the size and narrowness of the canyon.

Roadside, near Yellow Medicine Butte.

I didn't need 4 wheel drive for this section, but it was necessary to ride the narrow track near the bottom center of this shot. Most stock SUVs could make the section, if taken slowly.

Several months of intermittent rains followed by days like this made for the best conditions in decades for exploring the desert.

We started seeing a lot of barrel cactus flowers as the trail started to climb Montana Mountain.

Not knowing what the canyon walls would look like around any given corner makes this an especially fun trail.
