The workshop is part of the Bates College Museum of Art children's program that explores poetry in relation to the visual arts. Aimed at fourth- through sixth-graders, the two-part series begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5. Museum staff will offer the two-hour session "An Introduction to Writing Poetry from the Visual Arts through the Thousand Words Project."
Paul Janeczko of Hebron, a prolific Maine author who specializes in teaching poetry to young people, leads the second session, "Pictures and Poems" which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12.

The Bates program is offered as a ramp-up to the Poetry Out Loud state finals at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston on March 11, and is supported by the Maine Arts Commission. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, in partnership with state arts agencies, Poetry Out Loud encourages young people to discover great poetry through memorization and recitation.
The program builds on the recent resurgence of spoken poetry by bringing the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word and theater into English classes. Registration is open to all public, private, parochial and home-school high schools in Maine.
The Thousand Words Project at the Bates College Museum of Art focuses on the teaching of writing skills through the exploration of visual art. A Web-based TWP video and curriculum guide, produced by Durham-based Leighton Images, has just been launched. The TWP was designed by the museum's curator of education, Anthony Shostak.

The Jain monuments: Caves 30-34
The five Jain caves at Ellora are located on the north end of Ellora caves complex. They were mostly excavated in the ninth and early tenth centuries, and belong to the Digambara sect. The Jain caves are not as large as the Buddhist and Hindu caves at Ellora, but they present exceptionally detailed art works. They were co-built with the later era Hindu caves at Ellora, and both share architectural and devotional ideas such as pillared veranda, symmetric mandapa and puja (worship). However, unlike the Hindu temples at Ellora, the emphasis in the Jain caves is the depiction of twenty four Jinas (spiritual conquerors who have gained liberation from the endless cycle of rebirths). Along with these Jinas, the Jain temples present a galaxy of gods and goddesses along with yaksa (male nature deity), yaksi (female nature deity) and human devotees prevalent in Jaina mythology of 1st millennium CE.
According to Jose Pereira, the five Jain Ellora Caves were actually 33 chronologically distinct excavations, which he has labelled as J1 to J33. Pareira uses epigraphy, palaeography, typology, style, mechanics and historical background in texts to conclude that the Jain caves at Ellora likely began in late 8th-century. Some construction and excavation activity in the Jain caves continued past the 10th century, states Owen, until the 13th century before coming to a halt with the arrival of Islamic Sultanate wars in the region. This is evidenced by votive inscriptions dated to 1235 CE, where the donor states to have "converted Charanadri into a holy tirtha" for Jains by gifting the excavation of lordly Jinas.
The most remarkable Jain shrines are the Chhota Kailash (cave 30, 14 excavations), the Indra Sabha (cave 32, 13 excavations) and the Jagannath Sabha (cave 33, 4 excavations). Cave 31 is an unfinished four-pillared hall and a shrine. Cave 34 is a small cave, which can be approached through an opening on the left side of Cave 33.
Amongst its devotional carvings, the Jain Ellora caves offer some of the earliest Samavasarana images. Samavasarana is of special interest to Jains, as it is a hall where the Tirthankara preaches after attaining Kevala Jnana (liberating omniscience). Of interest is the pairing of Jinas, particularly of Jina Parsvanatha and Kevalin Bahubali which appear 19 times in the Ellora caves of Jainism. Other artwork of significance in the Jain caves include those of deities Sarasvati, Sri, Saudharmendra, Sarvanubhuti, Gomukha, Ambika, Cakresvari, Padmavati, Ksetrapala and Hanuman.

A 19th-century flour water mill it's a Grade II listed building. A mill on this site appears to have existed from the early 13th century. Originally all the water for the mill came from the River Doe Lea which fed the Miller's Pond on the Hardwick estate. By 1762 the Stainsby Pond, fed by the Stainsby Brook, had been constructed and the water also fed into the Mill Pond which was situated the other side of the road from the mill. Water was allowed into the mill race by sluice gates under the road.
By the 1840s the mill had been become dilapidated and William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire decided it needed rebuilding and re-equipping. The mill was substantially rebuilt in dressed stone from the Hardwick Estate and fitted with modern machinery, including a 17 ft (5.2 m) diameter breast shot water wheel, between 1846 and 1850. It was in operation for a century until it finally closed in 1952. Up till 1865 the millers were members of the Saunders family who had worked the mill since 1689. Subsequently the tenancy passed into the Hitch family for the rest of its working life, the last miller being William Hitch.
