I finally used some of the orphan blocks from the 4x4 quilt that wasn't! All prints are from Terrain by Kate Spain and the solid is Kona white. I quilted using coordinating pink and orange thread in a 2" grid. I took this cushion along to my first ever craft fair and it now has a new home :-)

"the bird's nest olympic stadium"

taken from my beijing trip last september 2010...i'm randomly posting shots from my travels for the past year.

everyone at that time were so anxious to take photos of this building while the lights were on....i was more anxious when the lights were off. i always wondered how this stadium would look when the lights were turned off....and i was not dissapointed. this building was one of most unforgettable building that i experienced....it was soooooooo huge!!! visiting it was so much different than seeing it on tv and in books!!!

First a rant, then a review. I (try) to work hard at my job to be able to afford to try new beers and eventually review them. However, it pisses me the eff off when one of my roommates has been stealing my beers and beer glasses for weeks now. I had a hoard of Quebec beers, I wanted to drink my bottle of Unibroue "U" Rousse, and hmm.. for some reason the bottle was opened and empty. That's not like me.. EVERY time I try/drink a beer, I post it on untappd, even if it's Club or OV. But this time, I looked to see if I had it very late at night when I may have had a few too many.. nope. I didn't check in.. so something's up. I look in a box where I had 12 different Quebec beers.. oh look.. 6 of them are all empty.. I didn't even get to try them! Then the other day I wanted to drink a bottle of Unibroue 17 Grande Réserve out of my Unibroue glass (Note: I bought one for $25 + shipping off eBay and got another two from my friend Jonny, but the other two are at the farm), the Unibroue glass is missing! I live in a place that's basically a dorm meets rooming home, everyone here's about my age. None of them really like beer, so it seems really unusual that someone would be stealing my beer I used my HARD EARNED MONEY to buy.. IN QUEBEC! You may be saying "but Cody? Why don't you move out?" Well, I'm perpetually broke. I can't afford to move out. Every time I do have money, I save it for my Quebec bièrcation fund ($50 or so per paycheque) and the rest goes to bills bills bills. I'm sick of this fucking shit.. I work my ass off (even if some don't think I do.. I honestly try my best) and this is the thanks I get. What does this have to do with tonight's review? One beer that fortunately DIDN'T get stolen out of the box was the new Big Bison ESB by Fort Garry Brewing.

Matt & team over at Fort Garry Brewing have been working on a bunch of new seasonals/one-offs for quite a while now, and I still remember reviewing their very first craft beer, Munich Eisbock back in 2011.. oh how the times have changed!

Appearance: Big Bison, like most of their seasonals/Brewmasters beers comes in a painted 650mL bottle. Big Bison has a portrait of a.. bison with the words Big Bison on it, with a 1970 Manitoba centennialesque "Manitoba" logo. Pours a somewhat clear slightly reddish-honey golden ale, thick amount of creamy beige head, fluffy as heck.

Aroma: Has a kind of Fort Garryesque aroma to it, reminiscent of Fort Garry's Rouge in aroma, some moderate amount of bitterness from the hops, a whiff of barley, sweet caramel malt notes and slightly bready.

Taste: While it's called a "bitter", it's quite moderate in bitterness to the tongue.. hi-oh ;) It has a bit of a creamy mouthfeel, floral yet somewhat bitter hops, caramel maltiness, slightly grainy, and somewhat toasted. The flavour is very much of a Fort Garry taste to it, it has a combination of Fort Garry of the past meets Fort Garry of the present. Notes that remind me of Fort Garry Rouge and Gibraltar yet flavours we should expect from Brewmaster Matt.

Overall Thoughts: I'm nowhere near as cranky as I was when I was starting this piece, the beer really calmed me down, soothed me to the point I'm just about ready to go to sleep. I've had quite a few Extra Special Bitters (ESBs) in the past few weeks thanks to taste testing beers at the Lt Governor's Winter Festival, and this is an incredibly solid ESB, nice moderate amount of bitterness, creamy on the palate, caramel notes, a bit toasty, not a beer you would see in Manitoba circa 1970 but this is a style that seems to be one of the "next big styles" in beer, as I've seen a few of my favourite breweries starting to experiment with ESBs as of late. Costs $6.55/650ML bottle at the Liquormart. 5.5% ABV and 45 IBU. I love the name, it's really a Manitoban kind of beer name, and the 1970 "Manitoba" logo reminds me of Manitoba's past. This will of course, pair well with a local bison burger topped with fresh bacon (with a bit of drizzling of maple syrup), Bothwell's award winning Monterey Jack cheese, buns from Le Croissant, Minary Homestyle Bakery in Souris or my favourite.. Stella's Cracked Wheat buns. Oh and don't forget to have a bit of BBQ sauce for the Big Bison burger.. a stout/dark ale BBQ sauce will do its trick!

Okay.. I'm hungry.

Day 100 in a year of finding faces. Woop.

The Sunday Off at St. Genevieve’s Academy was always a cherished time—a fleeting moment of respite from the rigorous discipline and strict dress code that governed their days. Yet even in their leisure, decorum and elegance were expected.

That afternoon, Clara, Emma, Charlotte, Sophie, and Leticia gathered in the school’s grand library, a room filled with towering wooden bookshelves, ornate fireplaces, and plush Persian rugs. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting golden patterns on the richly decorated floor. The girls had carefully chosen this spot—not only was it the most beautiful corner of the library, but it was also the ideal setting for their literary escape into the world of Victorian heroines.

They had each brought their most beloved novels—Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and North and South, among others—and as they settled comfortably on the rug, they couldn’t help but discuss their attire.

The Girls' Elegant Sunday Dresses

Their Sunday best, though still bound by their dress code, allowed for a softer, more personal touch than the weekday formality of blazers and fitted skirts.

Clara, always refined yet subtly expressive, wore a pleated navy-blue skirt that swayed gently with every movement. Her crisp white blouse was perfectly buttoned to the collar, but she had allowed herself a touch of softness with delicate pearl earrings. She stretched her legs out in front of her, admiring the way her sheer stockings complemented the dark fabric of her skirt.

Emma, ever cheerful and lively, had chosen a flowing mustard-yellow pleated skirt that added a splash of vibrancy to the subdued tones of the room. Her white blouse, adorned with ruffled detailing and a black ribbon tie, gave her an air of playful sophistication. She tucked her legs beneath her, smoothing her skirt over her lap with a soft sigh.

Charlotte, the most meticulous of the group, had opted for a floral-print A-line skirt in pastel shades of pink and blue. The pattern was delicate, evoking the femininity of a bygone era. She had carefully fastened a silk bow at the collar of her blouse.

Sophie and Leticia, seated beside each other, had chosen similarly demure but graceful ensembles—both in classic navy skirts with crisp buttoned-up blouses. They mirrored each other’s poised posture, a reflection of their shared appreciation for refined simplicity.

As the conversation drifted toward their books, so too did it turn to a fascination with the Victorian era.

Dreaming of Victorian Elegance

"Just imagine," Clara mused, running her fingers lightly along the gold-edged pages of Wuthering Heights, "if we were young Victorian ladies spending our Sunday off like this—but in corsets, bustles, and petticoats!"

Emma laughed, leaning back on her hands. "Oh, the agony! We think our dress code is strict, but can you imagine the discomfort of laced-up corsets?"

Charlotte, ever the romantic, sighed wistfully. "But wouldn’t it be lovely too? Wearing layers of silk, lace, and bonnets trimmed with ribbons… strolling through a garden with a parasol…"

Leticia smirked, setting down her book. "Until you realize that after high tea, you’d have to sit perfectly straight for hours, sipping tea in stiff brocade gowns with hardly any breath left!"

Sophie nodded. "And we’d have to wear gloves at all times. Even indoors!" She wiggled her fingers dramatically as if already feeling the constraint of tight lace gloves.

Despite the humor, the girls couldn’t resist the enchantment of the era they so admired. What would their Victorian selves have worn on a Sunday off?

Imagining Their Victorian Wardrobes

Clara pictured herself in a powder-blue muslin gown with delicate white lace trim, a soft bonnet tied under her chin with a satin ribbon, and a fitted bodice that would force her to sit ramrod straight even as she read her beloved novels.

Emma envisioned herself in a cheerful yellow dress, with puffed sleeves and a bustle, carrying a lace-trimmed parasol as she wandered through the gardens, gossiping with her friends about the latest romantic scandal in the papers.

Charlotte longed for a rose-colored gown with layers of fine petticoats, perhaps a velvet cape for chilly afternoons, and of course, dainty buttoned boots that would tap delicately against the cobblestone streets as she walked.

Sophie and Leticia, the more practical of the group, imagined simple yet elegant woolen gowns in deep jewel tones, perfect for reading by the fireplace while the rain pattered softly against the windows.

As their imaginations ran wild, their conversation grew more expressive, each girl weaving her own fantasy of Victorian elegance and restraint.

A Blend of Longing and Relief

For all their admiration of the beauty and refinement of Victorian fashion, they couldn’t ignore the sacrifices it demanded.

Charlotte, tugging lightly at the bow of her blouse, sighed. "As much as I adore the idea, I don’t think I’d last a day without being able to take a deep breath."

Emma grinned. "And imagine running in a layered gown! You’d probably faint before you even reached the garden gate!"

Clara smiled softly, tracing the edge of her skirt. "But wouldn’t it be wonderful to at least experience it? Just for one day—to dress like a true Victorian lady, to be admired for our refinement, to glide through a ballroom in layers of silk?"

Leticia raised an eyebrow. "And to be scolded for showing an ankle? No, thank you."

Their laughter rippled through the library, filling the grand, book-lined room with the sound of youthful delight.

Despite their strict dress code, they secretly enjoyed their own version of elegance—the pleated skirts, high-collared blouses, ribbons, and headscarves that gave them a sense of refinement without complete restriction.

For now, they would continue dreaming of the past while savoring the comforts of the present—sharing their favorite novels, lounging gracefully on the ornate rug, and basking in the warm glow of a Sunday well spent.

Auto Pilen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Auto Pilen was a diecast line of model cars made in Ibi, Alicante, in southeastern Spain by Pilen S.A..

Models were produced from the 1970s through the mid-1990s mostly in 1:43 scale.

A majority of the castings were inherited from French Dinky. The company was started in the 1960s, diecasting items like colorful metal sailboats and key chains.

In the late 1980s. Pilen was apparently bought by AHC of the Netherlands."

(...)

"Pilen made at least 50 different models, in the most convoluted story of diecast seconds and recasts of any successful diecast manufacturer (Colleccion Auto Pilen. No date).

Dies were apparently used or copied from a variety of other companies including French Dinky, Corgi Toys, Solido, Mebetoys, Tekno, Politoys (Polistil), and possibly some Mercury models."

(...)

"Pilen's model selection appears taken (whether by direct copying from blueprints or through available dies) from a variety of other producers, especially French Dinky Toys. Some tools from Meccano s.a. were transferred from Calais to Pilen in Spain so the models made by Pilen were Dinky castings – the base plate of which had been modified from MADE IN FRANCE to MADE IN SPAIN. For example, the Talbot/Simca/Chrysler 1100 saloon, Renault 12 saloon, Mercedes 250 coupe, Ferrari P5, Citroën CX Pallas, and Matra-Simca Bagheera were French Dinky castings (Dinky Toys Encyclopaedia). Later versions of these cars, though, did not say Dinky anywhere on the base plates.

So, from 1974 until 1981, several French Dinky Toys passenger cars were made by Pilen.

Bickford says that originally there was an agreement to market the French Dinkys in Spain, but most were sold under the Pilen brand name (Bickford 2009).

The French dies were used, but of course the base plates were altered, hiding that fact. These cars were almost exactly similar to the French dies, but with Pilen's own paint finishes."

(...)

"Auto Pilen also made a line of Matchbox-sized 1/64 scale cars, but these are more rare. Besides a SEAT 131 Wagon, a SEAT Ritmo, a Renault 4F (Van), a Peugeot 504, and a Range Rover – among others – were made but little is known about them."

(...)

"Pilen maintained a close association with other Spanish toy makers also headquartered in Alicante like Joal, Guiloy, Guisval, and Mira."

(...)

"Around 1980 there was a Pilen connection with Holland OTO, which had taken over Dutch Efsi Toys.

A 1980 Auto Pilen catalog shows many of the revered Efsi vehicles like the Model T series and many Efsi trucks continued as a line Pilen 1980 (Bras 2012).

Around 1990, there was also a connection with the Dutch diecast company AHC which appears to have bought Holland Oto and thus Auto Pilen (Bickford 2009). AHC has since shared dies and traditionally Pilen stamped cars can be found in both AHC and Holland OTO labeled boxes (Bickford 2009; Johnson 1998, p. 15)."

(...)

"With the bankruptcy of Doorkey in the early 1990s, Auto Pilen disappeared.

The last new models with the Pilen name appeared at this time.

In its time, Auto-Pilen was the king of the knock-off and die-cast second. Perusal of the model lineup shows castings were copies or closely copied vehicles from several different companies (Collection Auto Pilen).

Models were precisely crafted in a professional and uniform-looking range from leftover castings that had previously been in use elsewhere. Pilen appears to have been the most successful company ever at using second hand castings – yet so very nicely reconfigured."

Peugeot 304

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Peugeot 304 is a small family car which was produced by the French manufacturer Peugeot from 1969 to 1980.

The 304 was introduced to the public at the Paris Motor Show in September 1969.

Production of the saloon/sedan on the Sochaux assembly lines was discontinued during the summer of 1979, while the "Break" (estate) was produced until the spring of 1980.

Peugeot, which had always been a financially prudent company, saw a gap in the midsize car market in France, Italy and the rest of Western Europe.

By using the smaller 204's midsection, development costs were minimized resulting in a higher profit margin because of the higher pricing structure in the larger, better equipped market.

The 304's main competitors on its home market came from Renault and Simca, with Citroen noticeably absent from this sector at the launch.

The 304 was a success for Peugeot and was noted for several advanced features under its Pininfarina styled exterior.

With its independent suspended front-wheel-drive drivetrain and disc brakes, it rode and handled better than most of its contemporaries, including some cars in higher price brackets.

The chassis served Peugeot well and lasted for approximately 24 years adapted to derivative models. There was a distinct upmarket feel to the 304, its handsome lines were well suited to postwar Europe's newly affluent middle classes who desired roomy, advanced and stylish cars to park in their driveways.

At about this time the Autoroutes were opening up France and car manufacturers around Europe knew that any car launched hence, would need to add an ability to travel at high speeds, in relative comfort with sure-footed handling to its lineup in order to compete. The 304 fulfilled this brief and became one of the best-selling cars in its market segment.

The car was sold until 1980 and was replaced by the Peugeot 305, which had been launched in 1977.

It was based on the Peugeot 204 with which it shared many components, the most obvious difference being the frontal styling."

We'd heard all about the airport runway here on Skiathos, where you can see the planes taking off and landing within a few metres of a public road.

We'd watched YouTube videos beforehand and thought we knew what to expect, but we totally underestimated the thrill of seeing aircraft up close like this.

As they landed they flew just a few feet above us, and when they took off the jet blast was incredible - it was difficult to stay upright and the warning signs were there for a very good reason! Mike nearly lost his hat on one occasion and had to run after it (luckily it ended up in bushes so he was able to retrieve it).

Sometimes the pilots would wave to us onlookers as they turned the plane before take-off!

We enjoyed ourselves so much that we went back a couple more times, and even managed to video them.
