The feeling of peace and serenity in this snowdrift belies the fury of arctic wind that created it. I love this sort of dichotomy and try to work it into photos whenever possible. Images are much more compelling when there's a visual subtext like this. Standing here in real life, I was struck with odd sensation of having the late winter sun heat my face while the cruel winds were simultaneously causing my hands to go numb from the cold. But these incredible scenes kept me from retreating, cold hands notwithstanding. Once again, a familiar landscape had been rendered by weather into something surreal. Moments like this are all too fleeting, and even more so with the ever-changing light and sky. This was not a 'come back later' situation, rather a 'here and now' one. Indeed the following day saw milder temps but the sky was devoid of the rich texture of clouds and filtered sun that enhanced this photo. The day after that, the killer sky was back but all the snow had melted. Point is it's nearly impossible to keep up with events. I've been feeling the same way watching the daily news cycle. I thought 2019 was crazy, but thus far 2020 is crazy on steroids. Everything is relative I suppose. Now I just want to go back to regular crazy.

Just to set the record straight, this is not a selective color shot or any other edited kind of shot. Virtually, this is a SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) shot, with only some cropping involved. I was as stunned as you may be now, when, walking outside a restaurant at the Korissia port of Kea, I noticed dozens of all white chairs and then just a few red ones scattered here and there...

The reddish colour actually occurs mid-way in the feather, with the tip and base being gray.

In an odd move, Southwark based local CN 519 has taken CN 322's power, gone to the Port of Montreal and is seen here heading to Taschereau Yard with intermodal traffic from the port. CN 3043, CN 3875,
I drove past this building in Queenstown, NZ several times and was captivated by its stonework and tower‑like façade. It sits beside St Peter’s Anglican Church, and its architecture beautifully complements the character and charm of Queenstown.
On my morning walk through Queenstown on the last day of my visit, I finally took the opportunity to photograph it. The sun didn’t rise until about 8am, and at 5:25am the town was still wrapped in pre‑dawn blue. That quiet light allowed me to capture the charm of the “Odd Saint” with a wonderfully moody feel.
Nature can really create some strange things. Of course, everything appears strange if you didn't see it before...
I found this two oddities at the grocery store: the orange spiky thing is an odd melon called "Horned Melon" (thank you Maremail); the green thing is a bizarre squash.
Still life - created in a light tent on a reflecting surface submerged in water. A textured backdrop reflecting as well to fill the frame.
The heart wants what the heart wants.
This is apparently a common goldeneye / hooded merganser hybrid. We think.
The staircase in the Ashmolean Museum, I have been after a shot something like this for a while now. Really wanted a single person on each level.
With a group of Lesser Goldfinches and House Finches this one stood out as being different. Not sure what it is, possibly a juvenile or female finch/bunting???
During our short stay on the Dutch Island Terschelling I tried to depict the inland beauty of nature, The sea was always nearby and of course it was tempting to walk to the beach and capture the view across the water. But I liked this particular landscapes as much as I long for the seascape. For me the overall impression was even more important than every separate part. That's why I used the same desaturated mixture of tones for every part. www.flickr.com/photos/fransvanhoogstraten/albums/72157719...
This was taken just after the sun came up and the eagle was far off so this is heavily cropped, but the small brave bird there perched next to the eagle taking in that sunrise was too funny to see and not take the capture.
This of course was taken the morning after election day, and just goes to show no matter how you voted, we can all get along ;)
Once the sun was up and I had finished with 'my boats', I took a walk further along the bank of Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin to find some of the other group members. I was amazed at just how low the water level was, even compared to a fortnight ago, revealing many more of the hundreds of tree stumps scattered around the loch's margins. This lone yellow tree at the tip of an island cried out to be photographed; radiant in a brief burst of sunlight, it made a lovely colour contrast with the evergreens and oranges of the other flora.
(Whist waiting for the light I got speaking to a fellow Flickr photographer, garypaul421 - a pleasure to have met you Gary.)

A closer shot in the comment below.
always be on the look out for the unusual, and the contrasting colors. This yellow leaf trapped in the bright reds begged to be photographed. I tried various apertures, and decided that wide open represented the mood best.
