From EAA Website:

Octave Chanute, a successful railroad design engineer, designed and built a hang glider in 1896. Octave used the glider in his efforts to learn how to control a flying machine. The pioneering efforts of Chanute and other inquisitive men built up a mass of information on the problems and solutions of human flight that finally enabled the Wright Brothers to contrive and fly a powered aircraft in 1903.

The Chanute glider was very frail and offered no provision for pilot seating. The pilot hung by his armpits from the two parallel bars under the lower wing. His legs thus served as the craft’s landing gear. A short run into the wind blowing up the side of a hill would get the craft airborne, and once in flight, the pilot controlled the glider by shifting his weight.

Mainly, Chanute’s glider proved that the configuration was hard on the rider’s legs, uncomfortable, and only marginally controllable, but it was a step on the long, hard road to controlled powered flight. The Pratt truss construction employed by the Chanute Glider was later adopted by the Wright Brothers for use in their early gliders.

In 1959, EAA Chapter 29 decided to build a replica of the Chanute Hang Glider. Construction began in April of 1959 under the direction of project leader Rene Durenleau. The replica was built of wood and used varnished nylon (instead of silk) for the supporting and control surfaces. By early May of 1959, the project produced an exact, full scale replica of the glider.

The Chanute Hang Glider replica is suspended from the ceiling of the EAA AirVenture Museum above the Wright Flyer replica.

Whilst not consecutive, Ref 495 and Ref 496 are two leaves from the same Lectionary that was made in France. probably in the Maine et Loire area. during the fifteenth century.

The headline reads “Octavas consecrationis” which is taken to mean “Hallowed Octave”. It is not known which feast these lections are for as the two leaves are not consecutive, but they are probably for the Octave of Corpus Christi as the subject matter includes the Body of Christ. The texts have not been found on the Internet but whoever they were written by has used the writing of at least Gregory the Great and Isidore.

The size of the leaf is 353mm x 268mm (13 9/10ins. x 10 11/20ins.).

GENERAL COMMENTS: -

Whilst each leaf has creases from use as wrappers they have little more than age related wear and are good additions to the collection. The reference to Combrée in the note added to Ref 495 is a good indication that the leaves were probably made in the region of Maine et Loire but it is not necessarily the case. On stylistic grounds the leaves are fifteenth century.

This mugphlute is approximately 14" long and 7" tall in its leather hard state. The close-up shows a little more detail that I usually reveal...and the messy workspace is pretty normal.

The holes in the ocarina have not been carved at this point, but the tone is strong and I expect to get a full octave from the small ocarina (keeping fingers crossed).

This is kind of a clone of a clone. The Ultimate Octave was more or less a clone of the old Foxx Tone Machine, except it put the octave on/off control on its own footswitch and added a tone control defeat switch. Nothing else really sounds like that old Foxx circuit. It's really agressive and cool.

Playing in my favorit instrument. This is an octave mandolin or octave mandola. I uploaded it just for profile picture.

The Octave of the Epiphany

"The thoughts of the Church today are fixed on the Baptism of our Lord in the Jordan, which is the second of the three Mysteries of the Epiphany." ~ Dom Gueranger, The Liturgical Year.

From the Cistercian Breviary:

A great Mystery is this day declared to us; for the Creator of all wipes away our sins in the Jordan.

The soldier baptizes his King, the servant his Lord, and John his Saviour; the waters of the Jordan were amazed, and testimony was borne by the Dove: the voice of the Father was heard: This is my Son.

The springs of water were sanctified when the glory of Christ was manifested: all ye countries of the earth, draw out waters from the Saviour's fountains, for on that day did Christ our God sanctify every creature.
