did a photo shoot for a few guys at Fire House 24 in Tampa a few weeks ago. it rained most of that day so we stuck to shooting inside and in a brief window of dryness shot out side with one of the trucks.

Lencarta UltraPro 300 through Bessel octabox (camera right), yongnuo trigger

Lighting was a 30" octabox from dx.com camera left, inside it was a yn 560III speedlite controlled by a 560 controller. I had to use two sandbags on my 7' westcott lightstand, as the wind had really picked up. Post production was done using a Kodak Porta VC preset in lightroom, and then retouching was done in photoshop 2014 CC.

Nikon D700, AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm (28mm). f/10 1/250 second ISO 400, handheld. White balance: Flash.

Models: Robin and Awena.

Set up here.

Lighting: 26"" beauty dish camera left mounted on Bowens Esprit 500, minimum power. Octabox mounted on Bowens Esprit 500, minimum power camera right. Both fired with Pocket Wizard MkII. There was a snooted rim light camera right behind Awena which failed to fire - this would really have helped isolate the right side of her hair / hat from the background... oh well.

Post : Cropped slightly and rotated to upright the dressing screen. Brought levels in slightly both White and Black. Unsharp mask (radius 40, amount 0.17, threshold 0) on left hand of photo running down the edge of the dressing screen. Bordered. All with Gimp/Linux.

Lessons learnt:

Check lighting routinely on the laptop. The collar detail is blown out. Think dialling slightly less power on the left and slightly more on the right would give better ratio. The Canon histogram had a function where blown out detail would flash on the LCD, the Nikon doesn't seem to have this... Just more practise using the histogram maybe.

Forgot to use white card to set custom white balance... doh! Not really a lesson but get it together Dave!!

Although the beauty dish gives a colour cast to the clothes I love what it does to the

skin tones. I think the Nikon is warmer on skin tones than the Canon anyway.

I really want a narrow softbox with a grid, I'm finding it very hard to control soft light spill.

Regularly check that the "lesser" lights are firing - i.e. that no one has unplugged the damn things accidentally.

Once a shirt has been ironed, don't let the model sit down in it.....

Looking at other photos in the set, it would be handy to have a helper with a handheld speedlight dialled in to raise shadows on the details by a stop. Or possibly just mount that on-camera to give on-axis fill.

26 inches octabox with a nikon sb 900 flash from her right. Used a boom arm to get a better angle of the light.

So to challenge myself to work differently I bought a strobe light and a huge Octabox and headed out to Brighton to learn how to use it by shooting street portraits.

I met a suer cool couple called Nadia and Nick and made a few couple portraits for them before asking Nick if he could step aside and let me make a picture of Nadia as I thought she had a great look!

Nick described Nadia as the "star of the show" and they were a pleasure to meet.

From my Autumn themed shoot with the lovely Neva Moria.

An early morning this morning, out at Happy Valley Park in Caterham with Neva. The intention was to mix the beautiful autumn colours in the background with vibrant contrasting colours in the subject. This portrait is a little teaser for the many wonderful pictures from today.

This is the first time I've used a strobe light with a wide aperture which was a bit of a learning curve but after a few problems with blown highlights I managed to get it all set up right.

Shot with a 95cm Octabox filtering a 600w portable strobe through 1/4 CTO.

Garret Coyte came to live and shoot with me over the weekend so we grabbed Teal Kelly and Chelsea Deen and brainstormed ideas. This is one of the concepts I thought of.

The models were TROOPERS. The water was incredibly cold, and it was 11pm, so huge props to Teal and Chelsea for looking good when theyre extremely uncomfortable. Love them.
