Macro Mondays - 'refreshments' theme.

I have to admit that normally I'd reach for something sweet when wanting a quick snack but for this week's theme I've gone with savoury: creamy Lancashire cheese on German rye bread with sunflower seeds.

For 121 Pictures in 2021 #115 "World food day". Beans are integral to the diets of many people around the world, and provide a cheap and nutritious foundation for their diets. World Food Day highlights the lack of food security in many parts of the world, but beans can help overcome that, assuming the climate and soil allows them to be grown. These are Anasazi Beans, descendants of some that were found some years ago in an Anasazi pot at a site in Colorado, and are now commercially grown. I decided to try my hand at growing some, as they are unavailable locally in our new city. But they seem to lack enough pollinators (only a very small percentage of the flowers got pollinated and set the fruit), so I will have to get them online.

These beans are also ancestors of Pinto Beans, a type that should be very familiar to North Americans. But pintos have had all the flavor bred out of them, Anasazi Beans are much better, having a slightly sweet, nutty flavor. They also take less time to cook and don't have that same gaseous quality.

If ever there was an example set for how to use and reuse resources it is the forest. Nothing goes to waste.

Trees play a huge role in forest recycling. Here on the tree stump, the moist earth worms, beetles, microorganisms, and fungus invade it and begin to loosen up its wood. Moss blankets it and ferns and mushrooms root in it. Maybe a squirrel breaking apart a pine cone for its nutritious seeds perches on top to watch for predators. It loses a seed into the moss and next spring a baby tree will sprout. The seedling pushes up into the sunlight left when the tree fell leaving a hole in the canopy. It’s roots take up the nutrients of the old tree, pushing deep into the softening wood.

Irruption of crossbill provided an opportunity for American lifer in #561. they move in a group and stay few minutes on a tree, then move on. bad light but not bed for my record shot.

From Finch network and Cornell: A fascinating finch of coniferous woodlands, the Red Crossbill forages on nutritious seeds in pine, hemlock, Douglas-fir, and spruce cones. Their specialized bills allow them to break into unopened cones, giving them an advantage over other finch species. Because conifers produce seeds unpredictably, Red Crossbills sometimes wander (or “irrupt”) far beyond their usual range. They nest wherever and whenever they find abundant food, sometimes even in winter. Several types of Red Crossbill exist; they each have different calls, feed on particular conifer species, and might represent distinct species. The 12 Red Crossbill call types in North America are associated with their own core zone of occurrence and irruption zones. Type 2 is the most widespread of the call types, and some birds can be found in the eastern United States with some regularity—it will even breed there. Type 4, meanwhile, is predominantly a bird of the Pacific Northwest and sometimes the Intermountain West region, and its appearance elsewhere is always notable.

I was surprised when this almost adult Zebra started drinking from one of the females... More surprised that the female allowed it to happen...

Maybe it is because of the poor rains and the lack of nutritious grazing that is evident at the moment...

Love it or hate it, there's no doubt it's one nutritional powerhouse of a leaf.

Nature is the greatest artist

Crossbills usually prise open pine cones in situ to extract the nutritious seeds inside and will often hang acrobatically to achieve this. But sometimes they use their bills like secateurs to snip off the cone and carry it somewhere more convenient for extracting the seeds. I managed to capture this male in the act of pinching a Scot's Pine cone. Although there seems to be a hint of green about the plumage, this falls into the normal range of variation of male Crossbills.

Wild South Africa

Kruger National Park

This fleet footed dwarf antelope is exclusively a browser, and shows a preference for broadleaf plants. It is generally highly selective for green material such as young leaves, flowers, fruits and shoot tips of various plants. The ability to exist independently of free water is related to its selective browsing habits. Roots, tubers and bulbs are taken during dry months by raking the ground, and even digging shoulder-deep, to reach these nutritious food supplies which are high in moisture content.

When it gets cold outside, I put out Goodie Bowls for our backyard visitors to help make it easier for them to find food. I still fill the birdfeeders and broadcast nuts in the back of the yard for the squirrels, and birds, but who doesn't like a Goodie Bowl?

This particular "bowl" was filled with a special blend from Cole's called Nutberry Suet Blend, which consists of - per the lable - "a premium mix of fruits, preferred nuts, nutritious Suet Kibbles, and whole kernel sunflower meats. The ultimate trail mix for your wild birds!"

And clearly the squirrels like it, too

ODC-Start To Finish

I like to start my day with something healthy and nutritious. I have Organic oatmeal and Organic Raspberries with some Macadamia Nut Milk. I used a tiny bit of sweetener. It was tasty!

"Found a peanut!" If you're not familiar with this cute little song, Google the lyrics. It was one of my favorites as a very young child. It still pops into my mind when deciding whether or not to sample a wild food from nature for the first time. This fox squirrel better stock up on nutritious peanuts for the cold nights ahead.

Ready for the humming bird to fluff its nest... seeds are for food as well...

The roots, leaves and flowers are very nutritious people food.

I read that the roots draw calcium from the deep ground to surface and make it bio available to other plants...

So, I am letting some grow in my back yard garden now :)

After spending the winter somewhere in Mexico or Central America, this lovely male tree swallow has returned to Cardinal Marsh where it could stay and nest, or it could continue on to the far reaches of northern Canada. In either case, it is resting here after eating its fill of nutritious midges emerging from the marsh.

As I drove across Kansas twice in the past week, I thought it was only favorite for the Wizard of Oz. A number of billboards played up this Kansas' connection. Also, I begin to notice the publicity about its official state flower, the sunflower. And, I saw strange crops growing in their fields. One, I incorrectly identified as hops. But the other was the familiar sunflower.

I saw a sunflower plant going in village of Bulape, Congo this summer. I thought it was beautiful and provided a unique foreground for a picture of Mama Sylvie, Mama Rose, and Mama Jackie. I never thought about the sunflower as an agricultural crop. BUT now I know better.

I will do some followup work to find out if these Congolese women know about the other attributes of the sunflower and its seeds. The seed oil is healthy. The seeds are a tasty and nutritious snack, too.

Sunflower could can help fight the poverty.

Kansas Sunflower Commission. "While the vibrant, strong sunflower is a recognized worldwide for its beauty, it is also an important source of food. Sunflower oil is a valued and healthy vegetable oil and sunflower seeds are enjoyed as a healthy, tasty snack and nutritious ingredient to many foods.

Sunflower is an important agricultural crop choice for US producers in the northern plains of the Dakotas to the panhandle of Texas."

Some of the super foods. Berries and cherries.

For the last two weeks I have missed going to the market. I love walking there, seeing the colourful produce on every stand. I love the ambiance and the feeling of belonging which I get from all human beings. Whoever we may be, we all need nutritious food to be healthy and well. And once again, we got all these wonderful veggies and fruits to last us for the next few days.

לבריאות, LaBriut, as we say here, may we enjoy it all in good health !
