I gave the Scarlett and most of the Belmont goats some fresh hay tonight, to draw attention away from the special food I was giving separately to Chester and Jack. Those two are older and eat timothy pellets, a type of nutritious grass. The other goats love the pellets, and will mob me if they see me with the bowls.

This Grizzly Bear has just caught a female Chum Salmon, her favourite prey at this time of year as they are full of nutritious eggs. But if you look closely the salmon has squirted a long string of eggs that has made a passable outline of Africa above the bear's head. One of her twin cubs is moving in to share her catch. This was taken on the Nekite River in British Columbia.

Found along northeastern Australia from Mackay to Cooktown, the Cairns Birdwing is Australia’s largest endemic butterfly. The females’ wingspan can measure a whopping 18cm, and they’re easily recognized thanks to their vivid coloration. I think their highly adapted lifecycle is their most fascinating attribute.

Male Cairns Birdwing Butterflies are smaller, but more colourful than the females. They are fussy butterflies who lay eggs on native rainforest Pipe Vines (Aristolochia tagala and Pararistolochia deltantha). Females find the ideal vine using chemical receptors in their legs and abdomen to ‘sense’ tender, caterpillar-friendly leaves. Newly hatched caterpillars eat their own nutritious egg shell, and will even eat other caterpillars if times are tough. Caterpillars are brightly coloured to ward off predators, and store toxins absorbed from Pipe Vines so attackers won’t make the same mistake twice!

The Cairns Birdwing caterpillar uses bright colours and sharp spines to ward off predators.

When caterpillars are almost ready to pupate they ringbark their vine. Although leaves droop from water loss, the flow of nutrients is concentrated so the caterpillar gets a more nutritious meal before pupation. Pupation occurs in a cleverly camouflaged cocoon, which resembles a dead, dried leaf.

As soon as adult butterflies hatch the race is on to mate, as they only live for 4 – 5 weeks. Males are extremely territorial, performing early morning patrols and competing with other males to find fresh, newly hatched females. Courtship can be lengthy (up to 36 hours) and aggressive, and apparently the female slips the male a sedative to ensure he behaves himself!

The species was once under threat due to wide-scale clearance of its native rainforest habitat, and the spread of exotic vines including Dutchman’s Pipe (Aristolochia elegans). A. elegans closely resembles the native A. tagala vine, and is lethal to the butterflies in their larval stage.

Buying fresh strawberries from a local producer is not only good for your health, but also for your sense of humor. Here are some reasons why:

- Fresh strawberries are more juicy, sweet and flavorful than the ones that have been sitting in a truck for days. They will make your mouth water and your taste buds dance.

- Fresh strawberries are more nutritious, as they retain more vitamins and antioxidants than the ones that have been exposed to heat and light. They will boost your immune system and your mood.

- Fresh strawberries are more eco-friendly, as they reduce the carbon footprint of transportation and packaging. They will help you save the planet and your wallet.

- Fresh strawberries are more fun, as you can visit the local producer and see how they grow their berries. You can also chat with them and learn some interesting facts or jokes about strawberries. For example, did you know that strawberries are not actually berries, but aggregate fruits? Or that the average strawberry has about 200 seeds on its surface? Or that the ancient Romans believed that strawberries could cure bad breath, fever and melancholy?

So next time you crave some strawberries, don't settle for the bland and boring ones from the supermarket. Go to your local producer and get some fresh and funny ones. You will thank me later.

Almonds are nutritious enough though they are low carbohydrates. Also they contain a lot of vitamin E, it is good for our skin. So I eat some almonds every day and love them!!

Happy Macro Mondays!!!

Jays have a remarkable relationship with oak trees. They hide acorns in Autumn which grow vigorous, deep taproots. When the jays arrive to dig up the acorns as winter sustenance, they are able to eat the nutritious cotyledons whilst the tap roots remain fixed in the ground ready to make new oak trees. This surprise breakfast-time visitor seemed intent on burying, not digging up an acorn this morning. I think the unseasonal and relentless cold weather has succeeded in confusing much of our wildlife.

Butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata) is a type of winter squash. The fruit starts out with a light green skin, but its skin, or shell, turns beige when the squash is ready to be harvested in fall. The flesh is dense and rich-orange in color. Some people roast butternut squash and use it in soups, while others boil it, mash it, and serve it in place of mashed potatoes. This nutritious vegetable (technically a fruit) is high in vitamin A.

Butternut squash plants are annuals that grow in almost any climate. They are planted in spring, following the last frost of the season. Their vines grow quickly, but the fruits may not be ready to harvest for three to four months from planting time.

#Inktober prompt: Empty.

Did you know that power bowl is a term used to describe a nutritious all-in-one meal in a bowl, usually made without meat?

#DoodlewashOctober2022 prompt: Armor.

#Inktober prompt: Armadillo. Did you know that the humans and armadillos are the only species that can spread leprosy?

#DoodlewashOctober2022 prompt: Chicken.

#Inktober prompt: Rooster. Did you know that roosters will tidbit - a behavior where they make a show of picking up and dropping bits of food to let the hens know about them? He lets them eat first, and only takes what is left over. What a gentleman!

#DoodlewashOctober2022 prompt: Pretzel.

#Inktober prompt: Salty. Did you know that the pretzel was important with the Catholic Church in the 7th century, being a popular food for Lent, and often given out as a reward to youngsters for reciting prayers correctly.

Although lemons and limes may not be what you would choose for an afternoon snack, we consider them as powerhouses when we want to bring out the flavor of other foods. While both are available throughout the year, lemons are in the peak of their season around May, June and August while limes are at their peak from May through October.

Lemons are oval in shape and feature a yellow, texturized outer peel. Like other citrus fruits, their inner flesh is encased in eight to ten segments.

Health benefits of lemon

Lemons are packed with numerous health benefiting nutrients. The fruit is less in calories, carrying just 29 calories per 100 g, the value being one of the lowest for the citrus fruits group.

They contain zero saturated fats or cholesterol. Nonetheless are an excellent source of dietary fiber (7.36% of RDA). Lemon is one of the very low glycemic fruits.

lemon's acidic taste is because of citric acid. Citric acid constitutes up to 8% in its juice. Citric acid is a natural preservative, aids in smooth digestion, and helps dissolve kidney stones.

Lemons, like other fellow citrus fruits, are an excellent source of vitamin-C (ascorbic acid); provides about 88% of daily recommended intake. Ascorbic acid is a potent water-soluble natural anti-oxidant. This vitamin is helpful in preventing scurvy. Besides, consumption of foods rich in vitamin-C helps the human body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the blood.

Lemons, like oranges, contain a variety of phytochemicals. Hesperetin, naringin, and naringenin are flavonoid glycosides commonly found in citrus fruits. Naringenin is found to have a bioactive effect on human health as antioxidant, free radical scavenger, anti-inflammatory, and immune system modulator. This substance has also been shown to reduce oxidant injury to DNA in the cells in-vitro studies.

Additionally, they also compose a minute levels of vitamin A, and other flavonoid antioxidants such as α, and ß-carotenes, ß-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, and lutein. These compounds are known to have antioxidant properties. Vitamin A also required for maintaining healthy mucosa and skin and is also essential for vision. Consumption of natural fruits rich in flavonoids helps the body to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

Total ORAC value, which measures the antioxidant strength of 100 g of fresh lemon juice is 1225 µmol TE (Trolox equivalents).

The fruit is also a good source of B-complex vitamins such as pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, and folates. These essential in the sense that body requires them from external sources to replenish.

Further, they carry a healthy amount of minerals like iron, copper, potassium, and calcium. Potassium in an important component of cell and body fluids helps control heart rate and blood pressure.

Citrus fruits, as such, have long been valued for their wholesome nutritious and antioxidant properties. It is a scientific fact that citrus fruits, especially lemons and oranges, by their richness in vitamins and minerals, have many proven health benefits. Moreover, it is now beginning to be appreciated that the other biologically active, non-nutrient compounds found in citrus fruits such as phytochemical antioxidants, and soluble as well as the insoluble dietary fiber is helpful in reduction in the risk for cancers, many chronic diseases like arthritis, and from obesity and coronary heart diseases.

I make pizza, from scratch, 3 times a week. My youngest eats very limited array of food. So, everything is made from scratch and with as much fresh, nutritious ingredients as possible. Sometimes I hate having to do a massive batch of dough one day and then 3 other days make pizza from scratch. Then sometimes kneading dough and tossing pizza into the air are the most relaxing things ever. This week has been one of those weeks.

yeah, I kinda suck at this self-snapshot thing, but I usually just "take a deep breath, babe" and go with it. I was tres unhappy with my result for the barbarian piece and as the piece was important to me (the happening, not the photograph) I tried to shoot it again. This is pretty much what I was after... greed and over-indulgence, worship of money (fake fake). It isn't perfect, but pretty much nothing I do is. I can't let it stop me. lol. don't let it stop you! get up off the couch and start doing not wishing (my motto).

anyway reprinted just because:

Once upon a time in South Central LA there was a beautiful communal garden among the rank concrete. With 360 plots it fed 350 families nutritious foods. The people would grow foods not found in the markets. The people would grow medicinal plants because they didn't have access to health care. They grew for themselves and sold to the community. If you needed medicine, you were often given it for free because it was essential to your well being.

The gardens grew more than food, they grew community, pride and acted as a shelter from violence and gangs.

Local government saw fit to plough it under in order to make way for a warehouse. No matter that South Central houses many warehouses. No matter the people protested. No matter it provided so much to marginalized peoples. No matter that the government wouldn't dare to take away green spaces used by wealthy whites.

I wish the people in charge had to go live some-where awful until they learned THEY ARE NOT ENTITLED. Being white and rich does not make you a better person. You are not deserving.

These little red squirrels sure look cute, and very colorful too when they're sitting on the cold white snow. Also called the pine squirrel, these frisky small mammals spend the fall season caching food just like gray jays and chickadees. They clip ripe conifer cones from the trees and put them in a few large piles called middens, which may be several feet across and a couple feet deep! They'll extract and eat the seeds inside those cones throughout the winter season, digging right down through deep snow to reach that nutritious bounty.
