North Devon Holiday

The grand old church of St Mary in Bideford North Devon that in 2009 celebrated the 750th anniversary of the building of its Norman tower.

The old Barnstaple to Bideford Railway Line is now a cycle/foot path making up part of the SW Coast Path.

The path runs over the old track bed and there are still a few reminders of the railway like the buildings at Fremington Quay where the railway ran close to the River Taw estuary.

More recently the path was used to film a programme in the series James May's Toy Stories where a model railway was laid along the path.

Taken on a short stay near Barnstaple in October 2013.

My favourite beach in England.

Putsborough Sands in North Devon, just a mile or so north of Croyde Bay via a typically hair-raising Devon "road."

Both Putsborough and Croyde are surfers' havens.

This ruin or folly stands on the coast, near the village of Stoke in north Devon. I can't find any information about it but it may be something to do with Hartland Abbey and it sure makes a great picture frame!

The photograph above was taken using a Pentax Espio 120mi, which I obtained from a charity shop for £1.50.

Design initiatives make this a small and flexible camera – notably the physical size and overall quality of finish make this camera a stylish baby. It houses a good quality zoom lens (38-120mm), with plenty of features that enable a variety of picture taking settings.

The focus and exposure system on this easy to use camera is an improvement on earlier Pentax compacts, giving sharp results and a decent contrast of tones. One of the most useful applications available on this model is ‘backlight compensation’ setting, which enables you to take a photograph using natural light in the background and flash in the foreground, giving an even tone across the image. Panorama mode is included in this little package which gives a different aspect ratio from most other cameras.

I was along the North Devon coast today, patches of mist kept rolling in from the Bristol Channel. This one is working it's way in from Hele Bay, Ilfracombe.

Appledore, North Devon

Basically I thought it was all lovely until the farmer started talking about how this year the sow had been pregnant with 17 foetuses, but three of them had come out "mummified", as they had begun to be "reabsorbed" in her womb (his words). Then she ate the weird foetuses when they came out.

Oh, and then later, four of her remaining piglets drowned at the bottom of a ditch during heavy rain because they were stuck underneath their siblings.

The child left after that.

Must be seen big! Taken from East-the-Water side of the river on a very cold evening.....-2c. My fingers felt as if they were falling off.

Four exposures stitched into one. Manual exposure, manual focus & a cheap tripod.

PS. On the left is the sailing ship 'Cathleen & May' . Sadly no longer moored in Bideford.

Nasty, nasty weather in North Devon today. Torrential rain in Braunton.
