For Hindus, Varanasi is the most sacred place on earth - so much so, that to die along the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi is to be released from the cycle of rebirth.
It is every Hindu’s wish to be cleansed with the holy waters, cremated at the burning ghats with the sacred eternal fire, and then have their ashes tossed into the sacred waters of the Ganges. This allows the soul to proceed directly to heaven, without having to deal with karma and reincarnations.
After the cremation, ashes are gathered up and the workers sift them for bits of gold jewelry, rest of the ash is then disposed into Ganges.
Manikarnika Ghat, about a mile upriver, boasts up to 200 cremations a day. The burning of the body is not to be looked at as a sad event. After all, this is not just an end, but also a new beginning. Its simply based on the logic - "Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust".
Though photography is prohibited around the area, and I still remember being chased off 4 years back as I tried to shoot here, but with time comes experience. I visited the place every single day and spent good 2 to 3 hours each evening talking to the locals who controlled the area. I clicked the very first image, as seen here, only on the third day, once I had gained their trust by letting them know that the image is purely for documentary purpose and not for commercial gains or to make fun of the traditions that's been followed for centuries. I didn't have to hide or use a small lens, but rather I used the very obvious and visible Fujinon 100-400 superzoom (almost 600mm equivalent ) to shoot the above image. Its pretty simple, never steal a photograph, make it with dignity.

I shot this in Naukuchiatal (the nine- cornered lake) some 3 years back. With many sweet and sour experiences associated with that trip on the lower Himalayan range, I couldn't stop myself from doing a blog post about it.

Before I go on to the next boxed doll, I like to share my first impression of and thoughts on Nirvana Dominique Makeda..
When I opened her box my first impression was: "Wow! She's fierce!"
After seeing the first photos of her from other collectors, I thought of her as a queen. Looking at mine I think "Warrior Queen" is a better descirption.
I think she will be a lot of fun to play with. She's not as popular as I expected though. Maybe collectors have saved their money for the dolls they wanted more and could afford?
To me she's at least on par with Supernova Colette. I'm very happy I did get her.
The Buddha described nirvāna as the perfect peace of the state of mind that is free from craving, anger and other afflicting states (kilesas). It is also the "end of the world"; there is no identity left, and no boundaries for the mind. The subject is at peace with the world, has compassion for all and gives up obsessions and fixations. This peace is achieved when the existing volitional formations are pacified, and the conditions for the production of new ones are eradicated. In nirvāṇa the root causes of craving and aversion have been extinguished, so that one is no longer subject to human suffering or further rebirth in samsāra.

I found this in a box last week. In 1991 I was in first year at McGill University in Montreal. Nirvana was coming to town. I'd seen them a year or two before, opening up for Sonic Youth at Vancouver's New York Theatre on Commercial Drive (Dale from The Melvins had been drumming for them). Nevermind had just been released, but there was a lag before Nirvana hit it big. I wandered around my residence trying to get someone to come with me but only one person was interested, my friend Jeremy Tan, fresh from Malaysia. Foufounes was not a big club, but it was packed. The show was stunning; probably the best I ever saw. Kurt Cobain was in fine form, swinging from the rafters and generally going ape-shit. David Grohl beat the crap out of his drums. The whole thing just rocked, and The Melvins were a fine appetizer.

Este esmalte é muito lindo, faz muito tempo que comprei, usei uma vez e agora estava completamente endurecido, tô ficando triste com isso, vários esmaltinhos neste estado!

Lighting was a 30" octabox from dx.com camera left, inside it was a yn 560III speedlite controlled by a 560 controller. I had to use two sandbags on my 7' westcott lightstand, as the wind had really picked up. Post production was done using a Kodak Porta VC preset in lightroom, and then retouching was done in photoshop 2014 CC.

If you are up very early in Bangkok you will see monks walking around, dressed in saffron coloured robes collecting food from ordinary people on the streets. This daily ritual is part of the Buddhist philosophy of giving and making merit to attain a better after life. Bangkok, Thailand.

I had not intended to post this one but did so that I can check in with friends. We are in the midst of traveling here and there and will soon leave for a three week journey through the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria. Meanwhile I will miss seeing your images but will try to catch up in late August or September. Being away from Flickr, I realize how much I enjoy regular visits with you. It's quite amazing to have friends and acquaintances throughout the world, all sharing an interest in photography/art.
By the way the photo above was snapped while standing in a food line at a local concert. The sun was frightfully hot, so I diddled a bit with the color and added a peep hole.
