His consort sat right overhead on a branch. Too close and too brief for me to stop down the f or even move back, since I was precariously standing on a thin wall. You can notice blue hues on this buxom girl's shoulders and tail. Shot on a rainy day with overcast skies.
Niligiri mountain railway connects the beautiful southern hill stations of Ooty,Coonoor,Wellington,Lovedale to each other. As the engine slowly chugs along, one is presented view of beautiful mountains, magnificent tea-estates, picturesque valleys and long dark tunnels. The engine is Swiss made steam locomotive about a century old. The railway was conceptualized in 1854 and opened for public in 1899 . Now it is acknowledged as a world heritage site. It is no less a wonder that this toy train is still alive and throbbing, carrying tourists season after season, for more than a century now.
Stood in front of the Nilgiri peaks for a full hour just reflecting & photographing it in the late sunset light.
Ended up surrendering, entirely. Just incredible.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a railway in Tamil Nadu, India, built by the British in 1908. I met this gentleman while walking around the engine shed at Coonoor. He explained some of the features on the Nilgiri Queen steam locomotive, and how the locomotives of the railway had been converted from coal to oil fired. Unfortunately our comprehension of each other was limited so I only got the gist of what he was saying! Turned out after meeting the shed master shortly after, this engineer had actually received an award from the Prime Minister of India with respect to the work he had done in implementing the oil firing system on the steam locomotives on the Nilgiri Railway. Going back to the conversation I had with him he was clearly very proud of his award! I took the photos to send to him as hard copies.

Descending the phenomenally steep paths to Jomsom after completing the Dhaulagiri Circuit; the Nilgiri Himal dominates the skyline to the east.

The Nilgiri tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) known locally as the Nilgiri ibex or simply ibex, is an ungulate that is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and the southern portion of the Western Ghats in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in southern India. It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. Despite its local name, it is more closely related to the sheep of the Ovis genus than the ibex and wild goats of the Capra genus.
In the Tamil language it is called varaiaadu (வரையாடு), the term being composed of two Tamil words, wurrai a precipice, and aadu, a goat.In Malayalam it is pronounced as "Varayaadu"
A beautiful full moon night is all I need when I'm up in the mountains. A tent, burning fire is a must to keep any unwanted animals away. I actually heard a snow leopard growl at 7pm while setting up my tent. Started shooting at 10pm, finished at 7am. What a night it was.

The Nilgiris area is an International Biosphere Reserve shortlisted by UNESCO for selection as a World Heritage site. The Nilgiris form one part of the Western Ghats (mountain range) of India in South India. Nilgiri is Blue Mountain for Hindi and nestled inside these mountains are some amazing National parks and reserves. Home to the Elephant, tiger and Tahr (wild goats), these mountains rise almost more than 8000ft above sea level. From the plains below, which are hot and dry, I was surprised how cold it got when we arrived in Ooty (one of the hill stations developed by the British during the Raj).
