Waiting for a treat

Ex Nickel Plate GP30 2900 on a caboose hop waits to proceed through Hohman Jct. in Hammond in March 1976.

A Streamliner show in North Carolina is just days away, and a bunch of E and F-units, amongst other engines, are heading there for the event. Joining the fun is Nickel Plate 190, one of two Alco PA units left, on this BNSF manifest just west of Waterman, IL.

Thanks to Trainut and the Heads Up! group on Facebook for the initial information, and JayLev for updates.

This company operated from 1881-1964, merging with Norfolk & Western.

It ranged from Buffalo to Chicago and transported mainly Nickel Plate.

The company's headquarters was in Cleveland.

I have no idea how long this train has been sitting here. Or whether it even runs.

I doubt it does, but the ones I googled are all mainly in museums.

This one now sits, most likely forgotten.

NKP 765 has just arrived at Franklin Park, IL for Railroad Day 2016. What a classically beautiful piece of machinery.

In the last moments of twilight, NKP ALCO PA-1 190 is posed by the Barber Junction station Saturday night during the Streamliners at Spencer event. The night photo shoot will soon officially begin. NKP 190 is owned by Doyle McCormack and was originally built by ALCO for the AT&SF in 1948. If anyone was sitting on this fence about attending, this locomotive is what probably pushed them over to attend.

Nickel Plate mountain, BC Canada.

Gold was found on Nickel Plate mountain in 1898. The ore was rich but it had to be extracted from the host rock by crushing and chemical treatment.

By 1903, men were digging the first of 120 kilometers of tunnels into the mountain and building a tramway and a 40 stamp mill. Men climbed the mountain each day to go to work.

This is a shot of Nickels Arcade located near the campus of The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The shot was taken in mid afternoon so the ceiling would be illuminated. I think an early evening shot might be better since the lights would be on.

This is a handheld HDR comprised of 3 exposures. I set the autobracketing feature of my E-500 to take exposures 1 EV apart. I then processed the images using Photomatix and a little Photoshop to do some minor curves and sharpening work. Overall I like it, although I think the image has too much noise. I think there is also a bit of lens distortion, some of which I corrected, but some distortion remains.

NKP GP30 900 sits on display at the Mad River Museum in Bellevue, OH. Someday I'll return and get this stuff in better weather.

All part of Sudbury's showing off its world-class mining heritage, producing nickel for more than a century and still going strong.

An elevator shaft and tunnels lie beneath Dynamic North for a popular hands-on model mine tour. But it is also a multipurpose facility. Do you see that baby headframe behind the scooptram's bucket? It's an operating shaft and hoist, albeit not very deep.

Dynamic Earth provides a practical underground environment for testing new developments in the mining industry.

Gold was found on Nickel Plate mountain in 1898. Above the town of Hedley BC. Nickel Plate operated as an underground mine until 1955. The mine was reopened in 1986 and worked for ten years as an open pit mine.

Still alive and well, and wearing a similar looking paint scheme, on the Belvidere & Delaware River Railway in Phillipsburg, NJ as BDRV 811.

Aptly-named Nickel siding on the eastern edge of Valparaiso plays host to a meet between a tied-town L41-31 local and westbound intermodal 233-30 on NS's single track Chicago District between Chicago and Fort Wayne. These are former Nickel Plate rails which still move a good deal of rail traffic on a daily basis.

The equipment used by Indiana tourist railroad Nickel Plate Express reposes in Atlanta, Indiana, on a Saturday afternoon not long before a thunderstorm swept through the area. The locomotive is an F9A that was once used by Erie Mining Company. The passenger cars are former Santa Fe Hi-Level cars that once ran on Amtrak.

Will I ever tire of coming of age novels? Probably not. Will I ever stop identifying with the teenagers rather than the adults/parents (even now that I'm the age of most teen parents or older in many cases?) Not yet. The writing captures the awkwardness and angst with both humor and grief- all the references to 80's music and movies didn't hurt as that was my own "coming of age" supposedly...
