Built by ALCO during 1905, this
4-6-0 Nickel Plate Road Locomotive No. 44 later became Akron, Canton and Youngstown Locomotive No. 304, and is the only surviving locomotive of those that operated on that Ohio carrier, even if only a secondhand engine there. Subsequently, it went to a third owner, the Dansville and Mount Morris Railroad in New York.
Location- Steamtown, PA.

This is a visit to the nickel works "Planta de Niquel de Punta Gorda" near Moa (closed in 1992), which is currently under demolition. No barriers at the entrance, all seems lost and peaceful. But our first attempt ended at a rusty fence with unmistakable signs, that trespassing will be prosecuted. - Ex nickel works "Planta de Niquel de Punta Gorda" near Moa - Cuba.
The Varsity Theater opened in 1906 as the first nickelodeon - a movie theater with an admission fee of one nickel - in the Champaign/Urbana area. The building itself dates to about 1880.
The theater went through several metamorphosis' over the 116 years. In the late 1920s, The Varsity made the industry-wide transition to sound films. In 1943, the Varsity Theater was extensively remodeled (and renamed the Rex Theater), as a 330-seat Art Moderne style theater. It featured new projection equipment, new leather seating, air-conditioning and a cream and blue color scheme in the auditorium. The Rex Theater was advertised as “completely fireproof” when it reopened with the Sonia Henie film “Iceland”.
In 1948, the theater received another new name, the Illini Theater. A decade later, the Illini Theater was, along with the Park Theater (now the recently shuttered New Art), acquired by the Art Theatre Guild, which began a policy of art and foreign fare at both theaters.
For a brief period (1963-66), the Illini Theater became the Encore Theater, operating as a revival house. In 1966, the theater returned to its former name, the Illini Theater, and two years later, began screening adult features, along with the New Art Theater (at the time called simply the Art Theater).
The Illini Theater was shuttered in 1983, after nearly fifteen years as an adult theater. Four years later, the Illini Theater was purchased by a church, and it continued to serve in this capacity until 1997, when the church moved out. Since then the building has been renovated and remodeled and for several years operated as a bar, known as the Highdive Club, featuring live music. The Highdive Club closed its doors in 2015, the same year I took this photograph. Today the old theater is part of The Venue CU, an upscale urban wedding and event space that occupies both the former theater and Vriner's next door - which has its own interesting history.
The Vriner's building was constructed in 1890 as a clothing store, but was repurposed as Veiner's Confectionery in 1898. Of the five or six candy shops operating in Champaign at the turn of the century, Vriner's was the longest-lived. The shop's location next to The Varsity theater and near Champaign's railroad station, made it popular with patrons of both. The store also led to an influx of Greek immigrants to Champaign, as Vriner's promised jobs to many of the new immigrants.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Although the Vriner family still makes candy, the confectionery store closed in 1997 and the brand no longer has a permanent storefront. At the time this photo was taken, a country bar occupied the building.
The former Varsity Theater is a contributing property within the Champaign Downtown Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020, while the former Vriner's Confectionery is separately listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As previously mentioned, both buildings are now part of The Venue CU.
Located in Champaign County in east central Illinois, the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana are the home of the University of Illinois. The population of the City of Champaign at the 2020 census was 88,302, while Champaign County had a population of 205,865.

Decatur and Eastern Illinois (DREI) (former-NS/ex-SOU 5020) GP38-2 #3896 leads a four-unit consist and 112-car loaded grain train south out of Oakland, Illinois. The deactivated approach signal once warned north-bound Nickel Plate crews of a crossing with the Pennsy, now long gone.
A Watco subsidiary, the DREI initiated operations in September 2018 with the purchase of the CSX (ex-B&O) Decatur Subdivision and Danville Secondary Subdivision, connecting Decatur, Illinois and Terre Haute, Indiana. In December 2019, the railroad expanded by acquiring the Eastern Illinois Railroad (EIRC), consisting of approximately 56-miles of the former Nickel Plate Cloverleaf line between Neoga and Metcalf. The two lines are connected at Metcalf, forming a “V” pointed to the north east.
The train will head south for Charleston, pick up a fifth unit, and press on for Neoga, where the railroad interchanges with Canadian National. Although the hogger hasn't turned on the headlight yet, 3896 sports a wonky set of ditch lights that flash in unison, permitting me to time this shot to their "on" cycle.
We took another way and surprise, surprise, we arrived at the big sceleton of a former factory building. Some workers were climbing around high above ground and cutting steel with their tools. So better don't go inside the ruins, was my first thought. No one noticed us. - Ex nickel works "Planta de Niquel de Punta Gorda" near Moa - Cuba.
Those were the days! Kress Emporium, Asheville, North Carolina. Currently, this building is a gallery for local artists. Four shot panorama.
Despite not having a practical bone in my body, for some reason I enjoy photographing sewing bits and pieces. This is a nickel silver thimble (by Charles Iles) from the 1900s. Nickel silver actually contains no silver at all, but is a range of alloys of copper, nickel, and zinc, which give it a silvery appearance. The button in the background dates from the same period and is made from brass and steel.

Nickel Plate Road no. 765 is a 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive built for the Nickel Plate Road in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio. It is one one of the largest operating steam locomotives in the United States weighing over 400 tons.
While in Bellevue near sunset I had the spur of the moment idea to light up these two NKP Classics at the tail end of 'blue hour'. I was pretty happy with how that worked out. Bellevue, OH 3/7/2020

At We’re Here! the theme of the day is Horseback Trail Riding. Now, I’ve been really busy at work lately and do not have time to slip out of the office hunting for people on horseback. But, I remembered this winery not too far from our company headquarters in the Napa Valley, and was able to swing by there while driving from one office to the other. No trail, and no rider, but the group rules do say, “Scenery is fine as long as there is horses/horse in it.” So, there you go.

Cleverly disguised as Conrail, Norfolk Southern train 13N is westbound on the former Nickel Plate Road. In moments, the train will cross the EJ&E at Van Loon, on Gary, Indiana's southwest side.
These days, you can walk to the Hard Rock Casino from here. If you'd have told me that would be possible here twenty years ago, I would have thought you were abusing drugs. How things change.

After exiting the bore of the exhaustive Raitt Tunnel and cresting the top of the grade, eastbound NS loaded coal train U52 is idling down through the Virginia Lee control point, delineated by the unique former Nickel Plate Road signal heads upon N&W CPL masts, on the morning of December 16, 2021, near Roseann, VA.
Making money, spending money, saving money. For better or worse "it's all about money" and dealing with it is a daily routine.

When the Canadian Pacific Railway was being constructed through the area in the early 1880s, a reddish rock was discovered. When tested, trace amounts of copper-nickle sulphide were present. Subsequently, multiple mines were created to take advantage of the rich nickel and copper deposits in the region. 140 years later, the mining continues in earnest as the Levack job brings a loaded nickel ore train towards the siding at Sprecher as they near the final destination of the Clarabelle mill. Powered by CP 5920 and CP 6259.

Thought I'd use some time during a recent visit to Ann Arbor to reminisce about grad school. Nickels Arcade is on the central campus at Michigan. Plenty of commerce options for students, whether they have money or not! The arcade is one of the iconic locations on the campus. I chose B&W processing for the whole shoot, partly as a nod to my nostalgia and partly out of practicality of mid-day shooting with solid overcast. Cheers!
CRC/NKP 901 rests for the night at its base of operations at Lebanon, OH. The 901 is essentially the face of the Cincinnati Railway Company, mainly hauling its Lebanon, Mason and Monroe excursions on their shortline almost every weekend throughout the year. This impromptu photo session with Robert was mainly to have some fun with our flashes.
