The NS 8100 "Nickel Plate Road" heritage locomotive finally heads west after sitting several days in Chicago at Western Ave. Rail traffic was really backed up on the BNSF-Aurora sub which goes from Aurora, Illinois to LaCrosse, Wisconsin due to a derailment 10 days prior at Galena, Illinois. A fast, Nickel Plate Freight charges east over the wooden trestle at Baker Creek, just a half mile or so northwest of the Michigan town of Carland, on a misty morning in August. This re-creation was staged back in 2009, during a Lerro Productions photo shoot on the Great Lakes Central Railroad, featuring Nickel Plate Road Berkshire Locomotive #765 from the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, and Pere Marquette Berkshire #1225 from the Owosso, MI-based Steam Railroading Institute (SRI). This incredible event, featuring the only two remaining, operable Lima Berkshire Locomotives was only made possible when the 765, which is based in Indiana, visited the SRI for an unrelated railfan festival in early August of 2009. Thanks to the SRI's host railroad, the Great Lakes Central, it was possible to photograph both of these American classics doing 40 mph run-bys with freight trains over a two-day period, including some double-headed action featuring BOTH locomotives.

Note the drumhead under the headlight celebrating 30 years of NS and 40 years of 765.
Norfolk Southern GP50 7040 looks a little green as it curves through Hammond looking a lot like GP33ECO 4711. The green accents and flared radiator make up for the loss of yet another high-nose Southern Railway GP50-not by much, but just a little.

We got the dogs a super nice orthopedic bed from Foster & Smith...they all love it, when money permits I am going to order another
Update July 14, 2021- Nickel is gone now- scampered over the Bridge September 17, 2017. And I never did get another of these nice beds. And Foster & Smith went out of business.

Nickel Plate 765 slowly turns the corner at B12 off of the Harbor Belt as an Elgin-bound Metra scoot zips past. The old Lima-built S-2 Berkshire and the Boise-built MP36PH-3S are worlds apart in design and function. I'll take the 765 as the more aesthetically pleasing form of locomotion.
Focus stacked image of a 1935 US Indian Head Nickel coin. This image was created from 100 shots at ISO 64, 90mm, f/5 and 1/8th second exposure using a Nikon D850 and Tamron 90mm macro lens. The images were stacked using Zerene Stacker with the Depth Map option, and then some finishing touches in Adobe Lightroom.
NS 8100, NKP Heritage, leads a monster NPPR through Flagg, IL.
The closer NPPR got to Proviso, the more problems seemed to arise. Mid-DPU had drained batteries, Rear-DPU was having traction motor issues, and all 7 trailing motors were offline until La Fox. Certainly made for an interesting chase.

Nickel Plate Road GP7 number 426 leads an Indiana Transportation Museum excursion train across the Morse Reservoir in Cicero, Indiana. ITM operates a former Norfolk Southern (originally NKP) branch between Tipton and Indianapolis, with most excursions based out of Fishers. The Museum itself is within Forest Park in Noblesville. Visit itm.org/ for more information about the Museum and its excursions.
Made it out with my camera after a long hiatus for the Steam in the Valley this past weekend. Always have fun capturing these massive steam locomotives and seeing them in person. Would be great if they came through CVNP in October with fall colors.
