Contemporary cast nets have a radius which ranges from 4 to 12 feet (1.2 to 3.6 metres). Only strong people can lift the larger nets once they are filled with fish. Standard nets for recreational fishing have a four foot hoop. Weights are usually distributed around the edge at about one pound per foot (1.5 kilograms per metre). Attached to the net is a landline, one end of which is held in the hand as the net is thrown. When the net is full, a retrieval clamp, which works like a wringer on a mop, closes the net around the fish. The net is then retrieved by pulling on the landline. The net is lifted into a bucket and the clamp is released, dumping the caught fish into the bucket.

A bit more done on the tunnel before rain stopped play. The mesh is so far only secured to the top rail, so still needs fixing at the bottom and ends. I have made the door panel and was half way through fitting the mesh when the rain came. I searched my store cupboard and I think I have a piece of fruit cage netting big enough to cover the top, so will soon be ready for me to get the inside dug over ready for planting.

Electric netting can be used as interior fencing or for temporary fencing.

A small coastal village in north Norfolk has become the centre of a debate over Britain’s attitude towards wildlife. The council has permitted major earthworks to prevent further erosion of the cliffs at Bacton. But netting used to stop sand martins nesting prompted outrage across the country.

I have not taken a photo away from the farm since the beginning of February 2020. Short of coming out of lock-down, I am uploading photos pre-SPNC, from the days of my old Olympus E-1/E-330. Not many are any good but the exercise has given me an opportunity to look back. One thing that has struck me is how limiting the effect of noise was and trying to take (very early) street shots at ISO 800 in relatively dark conditions. I still used zoom lenses quite a lot until SPNC and am glad to have been educated in the use of a wider angle lens.
