Nest with Eggs- quirky granola girl (Melinda Newton)

from "Fancy"

"Freckled nest-eggs thou shalt see

Hatching in the hawthorn-tree,

When the hen-bird's wing doth rest

Quiet on her mossy nest."

Our room Eagles Nest has a private deck and the view over the valley you want - even from the bath tub. There is a king size bed and a foldable sofa which makes a queen size bed if needed. We visited the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle nest at about 9:30 and watched until 10:10 AM this morning JAN 19. It was a cool 56 degrees (F) with a brisk northerly wind of about 8-10 MPH. The male (Pride) was standing on the nest. He turned his back to tear at a prey item and clearly was feeding small morsels to one or more eaglets. He continued the feeding until 10:00 AM, when he flew to a branch just above and to the right of the nest to clean his bill. After approximately two minutes he flew to another branch which was a bit higher. He seemed restless and was looking about. We thought he might be waiting for his mate (Jewel) to return. He did not vocalize. In the meantine the nest remained uncovered. Phil joined us just after 10:00 AM, and we had to depart at 10:10. Phil later texted us to say he only was able to watch until 10:15 Am and there had been no change-- Pride was still roosting and Jewel had not returned. Later Phil visited, at 12:45 PM and reported that now Jewel was roosting on the branch near the nest and that there was no adult on the nest. In view of the cool temperatures, this seems a bit unusual.

The first red wasp of spring is beginning to construct a new nest--a few eggs are already in there.

This incredible nest and gorgeous contents (Australian Magpie chicks) is in the leafy canopy of a tall Jarrah tree just across the road from my place. The 'magpie clan' has been busy visiting the tree with mouthfuls of grubs gathered from our garden, and yesterday I noticed there were not one but TWO nests!

This afternoon I climbed the tree to get a closer look and was thrilled to capture this series of shots. Magpies have a reputation for swooping but I've climbed many nests in the past and had no trouble. Even so, I wore a hat and was prepared for the arsenal! Interestingly though, several members of the family group came and squawked me and did the occasional fly-by, but were mostly quite calm and sat quietly on nearby perches to keep a close eye on me.

You can see in this shot that the birds have used several pieces of wire to build their nest with. Even an old plastic zip-tie is visible! Industrial, clever, beautiful, and blessed with the most amazing carolling warbles to greet the dawn, magpies are truly a great Australian local.

I stopped at the Morningside nest to check out this bald eagle busy preparing (we hope) for the arrival of little ones soon. (Zoom in to see the bird.)

This photo shows a large view of the Killdeer nest site viewed from the north side with the Killdeer present on the nest eggs and the yellow sandbags placed upslope by me to show where the Killdeer nest site was located.

Note the stake with the green flag, a few yards to the right of the Killdeer on the nest, closest to the black tarpaulin border as a future reference.

I love to feed the birds and am always inspired by Nature so really enjoyed painting this nest in acrylic paint.

A termite nest in a tree. The build it high so it won't get flooded. Unfortunatly for them, anteaters can climb trees. Anteaters will only eat about half of the nest of termites though and will let them rebuild so they have a food source later.

Poor sleepy kidlet. I felt guilty that we left him alone long enough that he built himself such an elaborate nest.

We made sure to do lots of fun kidlet-things that day.

This Great tit was picking the lichen of the branches of the tree. Maybe it's making its nest for the spring.

Made from an actual bird nest. Some of the original moss and grass is still visible! I added some blue pigment for contrast.
