"The Nerd"

A comedy by Larry Shue

Live on stage at Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, Ohio, from April 28 to May 15, 2011

Directed by Rohn Thomas

What would you do if someone you’re supposed to admire shows up suddenly at your birthday party and then refuses to leave? That’s the central premise of The Nerd, a hilarious, hijink-packed comedy.

Set in Terre Haute, Indiana, in late 1981, "The Nerd" introduces us to the hysterical dilemma of a young architect named Willum Cubbert, a long-suffering yet straight-shooting man. We learn that Willum was a soldier in Vietnam before he became a successful architect, and he feels deeply indebted to a mysterious stranger named Rick Steadman. After being seriously wounded in battle, Rick saved Willum’s life. And because he was unconscious during this daring rescue, Willum has never really met Rick. Consequently, Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment in Terre Haute on the night of his 34th birthday party. However, Rick’s uncouth manner and his inappropriate behavior threaten to throw the happy occasion into serious shambles. It turns out that Rick is a stupid "nerd" who overstays his welcome with a vengeance. Have you ever heard the saying that “fish and houseguests stink after three days?” "The Nerd" pays humorous homage to that clever maxim!

Embroidered on a polo for my physics major brother. Screen of calculator embroidered with glow in the dark thread, so it glows! I'm hoping he will be in a lecture when they turn the lights out and someone points it out to him. =)

WARNING: Text below exposes the extreeme nerdiness of the author. If you are content in the belief that I am a sane and stable human being, ignore this picture and do not read any further.

So, this collage kindof sums up a small portion of my wind tunnel tests this past semester. While this wasn't the goal of the project, I can't help but sic the computer on what I'm doing. So, I put OVERFLOW to work.

This is Mach 4 flow over a cone-flare model (the flow is from right to left...European style, I know...but that's how my camera was set up and it would take too long to make it 'right'...). The top image is the computational grid, the second image is the computed prediction of the density of the air, the third picture is a schlieren photo of the model, and the fourth has the CFD picture scaled and superimposed on the schlieren picture.

(the regions in the schlieren picture change color indicate a change in density of the air, so the fact that the lines in the photo nearly line up with the color boundaries on the CFD prediction indicates that the computer got it right)

This is run in a low Reynolds number wind tunnel and the model is small, so laminar boundary layers are probably reasonable. The CFD seems to think so anyway. My jaw hit the floor when I saw the comparison. My (albeit brief) experience with this type of shock-boundary layer interaction has been that the computer cannot predict the separation location right...and it nearly nailed it here.

Hopefully I'll get around to posting some more cool looking schlieren pictures from this project...I'll try to spread out the dorkfest though...I don't want to get anyone sick, just in case it is contaigous...

A very very old theme. Nerd. So I started thinking, what is a Nerd. I think a nerd is a normal guy, that does everything a little different and preferably digital enhanced.... Therefore I took the Nerd (who happens to look like me) for a stroll in the park.

What I really liked about these pictures was the sound (cannot call it talking...) that local people make when you are in the park with a computer!!
