in fifth grade, i won a state math award. i also had to take the PSAT that year, that sucked. in middle school, i was one of those kids who had to be shuttled to the high school for math courses. i pretty much kicked the math sections' ass on the ACT then got a perfect score on the IL Prairie State (granted the Prairie State exam is a JOKE. Ex: "Billy has 2 dollars in quarters. He buys gum for 50 cents. How many quarters does he have left?" AND THEY LET YOU USE A CALCULATOR. yet, some people still didn't meet "state expectations". what in the world?!?)
moral of the story: i have always hated math, yet it's always been my best subject. that's what i like to call irony.
Yes, I am an avid reader, including tons of classics, fantasy, and sci-fi.
Yes, I played D&D as a teen.
Yes, I like comic books, and anime.
Yes, I play mmorpgs, and actually beta tested several including WoW.
Yes, when I am actually watching t.v. it is likely to be on either History channel, Discovery, or Sci-fi Network.
Yes, I spend too much time on my computer.
Yes, I am a Star Wars, LOTR, and Star Trek fan.
And yes, yesterday I actually heard myself tell a coworker to email me his term paper because I enjoy proofreading....

This is a manga(Japanese comic) section I found at a store in Nagoya. Comic books aren't just for nerds or children in Japan. There exist manga for every age group and interest. I've seen manga about such mundane topics as business management. This section is a pretty good indicator of how narrow the interest for a lot of these manga are.
It's a genre called Yuri that is specifically about friendship/romance between women. It is not pornography. That exists too, but it's in a different section aimed at a different audience. Yuri is a subgenre of girls manga. So typically this would be read by girls who are aged 12+. You would think this genre would be extremely niche, but as the covers of the manga in the middle of the shelf proclaim, it's at least popular enough to justify turning some of these comics into cartoons on TV.
There also exists a corresponding Boy's Love section that is also a subgenre of girls manga. In fact most stores that sell manga have fairly large Boy's Love sections. I took a picture of this section because this is the first store I've found with a labeled shelf for Yuri.
