NERD

He’s name is Jack and he’s a nerd playing Space Invaders.

Done in Photoshop.

This is my project for the Nerd Wars Intellectual Challenge -- to “cast a vote” for either Charles Dickens or William Shakespeare by creating a project inspired by one of the literary work of one of the two writers. I’m a Dickensian gal, so I cast my vote for Dickens. I’m having trouble choosing just one work as my inspiration.

Perhaps this shawl belongs to Rachael fromHard Times:”She had nothing to do, then, but to cover herself with her shawl before going out into the wind and rain.”

Although this shawl seems fit for a woman, maybe the neutral grey is masculine enough for Samuel Pickwick of The Pickwick Papers: ””You’re a good fellow, Pickwick,’ said the host, grasping his

hand. ‘Emma, give Mr. Pickwick a shawl to tie round his neck--make haste..’”

Maybe Pip’s sister Mrs. Joe from my personal favorite Dickens novel Great Expectations would fancy this shawl: “We walked to town, my sister leading the way in a very large beaver bonnet, and carrying a basket like the Great Seal of England in plaited straw, a pair of pattens, a spare shawl, and an umbrella, though it was a fine bright day. I am not quite clear whether these articles were carried penitentially or ostentatiously; but, I rather think they were displayed as articles of property - much as Cleopatra or any other sovereign lady on the Rampage might exhibit her wealth in a pageant or procession.”

Of course, no one can forget Dickens’ most famous knitter Madame DeFarge. While this shawl is too neutral to suit Madame’s taste for bright colors (“Madame Defarge being sensitive to cold, was wrapped in fur, and had a quantity of bright shawl twined about her head, though not to the concealment of her large earrings. Her knitting was before her, but she had laid it down to pick her teeth with a toothpick”), I think she would like the ghoulish skull beads in this shawl. Perhaps each skull represents each death she causes in her pursuit of revenge.

For my Team Macabre tie-in, this shawl is meant for Jennet Humfrye, the vengeful ghost in the novella and movie The Woman in Black. Even a ghost needs to stay warm when haunting graveyards.

I had a short skein of gorgeous skully handspun yarn my best friend gave me for Christmas. This seemed like a great pattern for it.

my biffles and i being silly

This is the cache-slot from the insides of a masterpiece of engineering: the 20th Anniversary Macintosh computer. I mean, come on: doesn't it blow your mind - having the cache on a RAM-stick? :-D

This desktop machine features flat-panel metal and leather design, television and FM radio tuners, special sound system with subwoofer, 12.1-inch active-matrix display, CD-ROM drive...and hit the market in early 1997! Talk about being ahead of the market...

Production was limited to 12,000 units, in five countries: France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, and the United States, and one of my new colleagues has one sitting on his desk, running iTunes 2.0 (!), and uses it as his work music station (it holds an awesome 2GB of memory, and 128 MB of RAM...!).

The sound is - still - amazing, and the cable that connects the machine to the subwoofer could probably survive a lunar expedition.

OK - I'm done.

check out these awesome labels I made for my Flexography Printing class project! I designed, generated, and produced these by hand on a press! I used a drawing from my sketchbook to do my project stickers! they're 3" stickers and I did a run of hundreds!

Hope I get a good grade!

Erkle would be proud.

This is Nerdly Boy.

Look at him, he's a nerd.

The style is supposed to be inspired by Jhonen Vasquez but some pop art found its way in too (which is good, because straight Jhonen Vasquez creeps me out).
