I really like tall ships and every year I have looked to the Dublin Maritime Festival but there was no festival in 2011 or 2012 but instead there is the Tall Ship Races 2012.
The Tall Ships' Races are races for sail training "tall ships" (sailing ships). The races are designed to encourage international friendship and training for young people in the art of sailing. The races are held annually in European waters and consists of two racing legs of several hundred nautical miles, and a "cruise in company" between the legs. Over one half (fifty-percent) of the crew of each ship participating in the races must consist of young people.
Between 1973 and 2003 the races were known as The Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races, having been sponsored by Cutty Sark whisky. From 2004 to 2010 the races were supported by The City, Province, and Port of Antwerp. The current sponsor of the Tall Ships' Races 2010–2014 is the city of Szczecin.
The term tall ship came into widespread use in the mid-20th century with the advent of the Tall Ships' Races, and was not generally used in the era when such ships were the norm. The term's popularity may have stemmed from its use in a well-known nautical poem by English Poet Laureate John Masefield entitled "Sea-Fever", first published in 1902.
Participating vessels are manned by a largely cadet or trainee crew who are partaking in sail training, 50 percent of which must be aged between 15–25 years of age and who do not need any previous experience. Thus, tall ship does not describe a specific type of sailing vessel, but rather a monohull sailing vessel of at least 9.4 metres (30 ft) that is conducting sail training and education under sail voyages. Participating ships range from yachts to the large square-rigged sail training ships run by charities, schools and navies of many countries.

Race One started in Saint Malo (France) (Thursday 5 July to Sunday 8 July) to Lisbon (Portugal) (Saturday 19 July to Sun 22 July).
Race Two was from Lisbon to Cadiz (Spain) (Thursday 26 July to Sunday 29 July).
Cruise in company to A Coruña (Spain) (Friday 10 August to Monday 13 August).
Race Three from A Coruña to Dublin (Ireland) (Thursday 23 August to Sunday 26
The multi-national fleet will race from Dublin across the Irish Sea and dock in Liverpool from Thursday August 30 for a four-day event running until Sunday September 2. This last bit of information is confusing as Dublin has made the following claim: "As the final host port for the Tall Ships Races 2012, Dublin will be the place to be from the 23rd to the 26th of August 2012". On investigating the matter I was informed that there is an additional event known as The "Irish Sea Tall Ships Regatta".
Commenting on the Irish Sea Tall Ships Regatta, Peter Cardy, Chief Executive of Sail Training International, said: “Liverpool has a rich maritime history and has been a great friend to sail training which has helped to develop a strong willingness throughout the Tall Ships family to return to the city. We hope that the Irish Sea Tall Ships Regatta could become a recurring fixture in the busy calendar of events that is enjoyed by the residents of Liverpool as well as the many visitors to this fantastic city.”

I need to do more low light testing to see what the HX9v is capable of. Of course, I would not expect it to perform well considering the size of the sensor.
I have yet to check out handheld twilight and other scene modes for night and lowlight shooting.
This image is shot from a fast moving Acela Express around 8pm (low light) using intelligent auto mode. The HX9V tries too hard to minimize the grain and color noise, but as a result, it "mushes" details from out of focus subjects. In this particular sample, the train and the walls were "mushed"—not only the details were lost, but the structures get crushed, resulting in pasty, watercolor painting effect.
I take this as a challenge/character of the HX9v and try to make something out of otherwise a poor digital image. Using VintageScene app, I hid all the nasty artifacts and got something interesting.

"Stari grad" (Old Town) was one among the castles which were erected across Croatia by aristocratic family Zrinski. The castle consists of two citadels with two interior yards (atrium). At the front of the castle there is a bell tower with a baroque dome, dating from 1790. The church of St Nicholas is a one-nave space, formerly a warehouse for salt, which was adapted for church purposes in the 18th c. The church is a constituent part of this complex and together they present a unique spatial unit. Despite heavy bombing at the end of WW2, the complex has maintained its original characteristics of an early-baroque structure.
The Frankopan town – castle is a mediaeval defensive structure, situated on a hill above the sea. It dominates in its surroundings with its dimensions and shape and it represents a unique architectural accent in the environment. Petar Zrinski started the construction works in 1650 in the shape of a rectangular fortified yard with exterior corner towers of a circular shape. The castle was built on the basis of a late-Renaissance fort, but with numerous Baroque details. The constructor is unknown, but it can be assumed, according to economical and political connections of prince Petar Zrinski and comparative morphological research, that the main constructors were from Veneto.
The castle consists of basement level where there were warehouses, and the first and second storey surrounded by a beautiful atrium. The inner yard with a cistern in the middle (with coats of arms of the Zrinski and Frankopans) is opened with colonnades around it. Jesuits, the owners of the castle from 1883 have annexed the second storey and changed the interior ground plan arrangement.
Even though the castle looks like a fort from the outside, it wasn`t the purpose for its construction, because there was no need for such at that time. Still, according to its interior features it is constructed as a residential castle. It was luxuriously furnished.
The downfall of the Zrinski and the Frankopans after the failure of the conspiracy in 1671, brought to the ravaging of the castle, and numerous further renovations which have changed its appearance (monastery, colegium, hospital). Moreover, the main architectural elements and a large part of manneristic and early-Baroque architectural sculpture have been preserved, what makes the castle one of the most significant historical structures of the wider region. Apart from its cultural and architectural values, it possesses substantial historical, symbolic and associative worth, most of all as a former seat of the most important Croatian aristocratic families, and legend has it that it was the place where the Zrinski-Frankopans conspiracy against the Hapsburg dynasty came to existence.
Kraljevica (known as Porto Re in Italian and literally translated as "King's cove" in English) is a town in the Kvarner region of the country of Croatia, located between Rijeka and Crikvenica, approximately thirty kilometers from Opatija and near the entrance to the bridge to the island of Krk. Its population is 2,897 and a total of 4,579 in the municipality (2001), and it is administratively governed under the Rijeka civil authority.
Kraljevica is a town that was written about as early as the 13th century. Today, in addition to having the oldest shipyard on the Adriatic, Kraljevica's skyline is dominated by two medieval castles and a church of the Croatian nobles Zrinski and Frankopan. Kraljevica's shipyard employed Josip Broz Tito, the former leader of Yugoslavia, during the first half of the 20th century in his early years of organizing for the Communist Party. After he became marshal of Yugoslavia following World War II the shipyard took his name, until democratic changes in the 1990s.
Today Kraljevica is also a popular tourist destination on the Adriatic coast. The Krk Bridge is located nearby, in the southeast part of the city.
This is a photograph from the 35th Michael Manning Memorial "Dunshaughlin 10KM" Road Race and Fun Run which took place in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, Ireland on Saturday 21st June 2014 at 19:30. This race is widely acknowledged in the running community as one of the best races in Ireland. It is also one of the oldest 10KM races in Ireland. The numbers for this race have exceeded expectations year on year for the past number of years. In 2008 a record field of 306 took to the start line but by 2012 this number had more than doubled with 647 runners taking part. The starting numbers in 2013 topped this again at 668. Then this year the numbers rocketed to a new record of 883. Who knows but this race could reach 1,000 entrants next year. The work of the organising committee must be commended on making this event possible. The Dunshaughlin 10KM has earned it's place at the top of the pedestal of Irish running through the sheer hard work of Dunshaughlin AC over the years. Well done to all.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase.
