Toson Hulstai Nature Reserve was established in 1998 and protects 4,700 square kilometres of dry steppe ecosystem spread across Khentii and Dornod provinces in eastern Mongolia. Key conservation goals include providing suitable habitat for 50,000 gazelle, doubling the number of active marmot colonies and establishing a viable wolf population.
When we arrived in Hulstai we were met by Amar. For two days he stayed with our group, leading us across the land he protects. In the background is one of the reserve’s few springs, fenced off to keep trampling livestock away from the delicate source point.
Amar is wearing a Nature Conservancy hat, fitting as the reserve is receiving important support from the organization.

When I visited the Green Swamp in early June, I saw Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) in bloom. The chiggers were also quite active, a problem that I did not experience when I visited in early May. The Green Swamp is located near Wilmington, North Carolina.

from 1,000 feet up on McCall Point. We are going to have to come back here on a sunny day, the scenery is fantastic. We could see from Mount Hood on our left to Mount Adams over in Washington and I bet there'd be more on a clear day. Next time.
Several species of Drosera (Sundews) can be found in the Green Swamp near Wilmington, North Carolina. One species, which I presume to be Dwarf Sundew (Drosera brevifolia), was in bloom.
The Gordon Butler Nature Preserve is located in the Sandhills community of Hope Mills just south of Fayetteville, NC, in Cumberland County. This 12.5-acre preserve contains an impressive assemblage of pine flatwoods plants including an amazing collection of mountain laurel flower color variants and the rare white wicky (Kalmia cuneata). This preserve is also the site of a longleaf pine restoration project funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.

The 2500-acre Nature Conservancy preserve protects the glacial wetlands and dense forests at the headwaters of Twomile Run, a tributary of Tobyhanna Creek. A blue-blazed loop-trail system, made up of boardwalks and footpaths, traverses the site.
Rowena pond creates a summertime oasis as it retains water through the arid summer.
The dry plateau on Rowena Crest is east of the Cascade Mountain ridgeline and approachs the high plains desert. In the summer, the ground is dry and the grass is parched except near depressions in the basalt where water collected in the winter and lasts trhough the summer. Small circular wetlands survive the summer as oases for wildlife.
