These two black-chinned hummingbirds (males) snuck in under the beak of the rufous hummingbird to get a sip from his favorite feeder. They managed to just get a little sip as he quickly came to defend. Lucky for them (but not for me) he only stayed a few days and then moved on to his breeding grounds in the Northwestern region of the US.
It isn't often two male hummingbirds are tolerant of each other long enough to feed at the same time.

The blue water really looks nice with a black and white gull flying above it. Laughing gulls can be found just about everywhere along the coast, even Walmart parking lots. Their calls evoke fond memories of childhood days at the beach or fishing with my dad.
Portland, Texas in March 2022
Visited the family ranch property in Dimmit, County, Texas (near Asherton) and document some wildflower that I found growing there. This was during March 2019.
Rare snow in our area of Texas (first time since December 2004) and some of the critters were not sure what to make of it. I'm not a fan of cold wet weather (one of the reasons I love living in South Texas is that we don't have much of it) but had to take the opportunity to experiment photographing this unusual weather.
Golden fronted woodpecker on a mesquite tree in my front yard.
Portland, Texas.
Very tiny orb weaver spiders. I'm not sure of t he species but know by the design of the web that it is in the family of orb weavers. I love wet spider webs. It was a treat to see the one spider with raindrops dripping of of it as it made its way along the edge of a wet leaf.

I'm not completely sure of the butterfly species except that it is one of the sulphur species. It sure enjoyed the flowers on the Pride of Barbados (aka Mexican Bird of Paradise) shrub in my yard.

This migratory warbler was willing to show off a bit and let me get some shots. It was passing through during spring migration.

My mom planted some leeks in her garden. She has decided that she doesn't really like the taste of them compared to onions or garlic but the blooming phases of this plant are interesting. Flowers are greenish-white and thickly clustered. Also, the blooms last quite a long time.

One of my favorite wildflowers. The magenta color eye-catching and quite different from most of the other wildflowers blooming at the same time. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas
With those flashy turquoise eyes, a thornbush dasher is very dashing. This one was in my yard in Portland, Texas during October 2017 and posed for a few shots.
Close up of a beautiful flower on a very prickly cholla cactus. One of the many pretty things to enjoy in Big Bend National Park during June 2019.

More from my aunt's butterfly garden. A variety of butterflies an other pollinators were taking advantage of the zinnias and other blooms on a marvelous October day.

In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas. I think the flower is a Texas thistle. One of our colorful summer wildflowers with a pollinator at work.
Yet another variation of the Mexican hat or sombrero flower blooms. I love them in any color.

Je n'avais jamais remarquĂ© la calotte roussĂ¢tre sur la tĂªte d'un Junco ardoisĂ©, une femelle ou un jeune?
I had never noticed the reddish brown cap on a Junco's head, a female or a young?
Another appearance by a male bronzed cowbird. I'm not sure if it's the same one I photographed and posted earlier or a different one. I don't see many of them and since this one seems to be "guarding" the same perch, I suspect it is the same one. Anyway, they are interesting looking birds. The mating display of these birds is entertaining - the male will puff up his feathers and strut around the female, then leaps straight up and hover, sometimes whirling in the air (helicoptering) while singing a courtship song. Sometimes multiple males are competing for the same female. They, unfortunately, will lay eggs in the nest of other species of songbirds often at the expense of that species' own offspring.

Male bluegrosbeak with a dragonfly as a meal. Next to the Nueces River in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.
During fall migration, I was fortunate to get some male ruby-throated hummingbirds pass through. The background in this shot is a bit too much, but I managed to get this guy in mid-air and it seemed to be dancing a little jig.

Northern parula is a small warbler with blue-gray upperparts and yellow breast and throat. They usually present a darker orange patch across the breast and mature males have a brown "necklace" (band between neck and breast), bright white belly, 2 white wingbars and a yellowish patch between the shoulders help round the ID markers. They have a distinctive simple song that sounds like a rising buzz, ending on a single high-pitched chip. Our property is at the western-most edge of their summer range. In 2021, I saw the first fledglings of this species so I know that they will nest here.

Lo que me encanta de esta lepidĂ³ptera es su color, neutro con detalles en un tono mĂ¡s oscuro, perfectamente diseñado.

In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas. Perched nicely atop the remains of a Mexican hat flower (aka sombrero flower).
This species was once grouped with a similar bird and both were called "white-collared seedeater". The other one is now called cinnamon-rumped seedeater and this one is called Morelet's seedeater. They can be found in deep southern Texas and down into the tropical regions of Mexico, Central American and Panama. A beautiful little songbird that posed in the pretty shrub.
Cancun, Mexico during April 2022
In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas. Beautiful damselfly perched on an arching stalk of grass over the Nueces River.
I had the pleasure of observing a family of ladder-backed woodpeckers. Adults teaching the youngsters how to forage for food on the tree bark. They didn't pay much attention to me as they worked away. In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.
Zinnias are very attractive to pollinators. I observed and photographed both honey bees and American bumble bees on these zinnias.

Great pollinator! The brilliant green insect was busy working on the flowers of a yarrow plant in my yard.

Spent a week house sitting for my sister who lives in a Dallas suburb. Photographed some of the wildlife visiting her yard, like this squirrel.
Chili petin (or chili pequin depending who you're asking) these little chilis pack a bunch of heat. They grow wild all around my yard and we usually pick a few to use in recipes or dry for pepper flakes (use carefully) and the wildlife takes care of the rest. I saw this one dripping with water after I was running a sprinkler in the garden.

In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas. The plant is known commonly as autumn sage (salvia greggii). Not sure which of the bee mimic flies this is. Consulted with bugguide.net and have learned that this actually is a carpenter bee that mimics a horsefly. Amazing world of insects!

This one is a male, indicated by the blue color. Females are green with black markings. This one perched in several different places near the small pool of standing water that is not really a pond but a spring-fed puddle near the Nueces river. The red bug making a getaway at the bottom of the stick where this dragonfly perched is possibly an eastern leaf-footed bug in nymph stage. Regardless, it was probably lucky to avoid being eaten. Yellow warblers tend to be seen during spring and summer on our property. I guess these will be migrating away once fall arrives. I was happy to see several of them on our property in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas. They particularly love water and came to the spray of a lawn sprinkler. I also find them drinking and bathing along the bank of the river.
Cedar waxwings seem to be very photogenic birds. They visit our place during winter months and leave in spring to go back to breeding grounds north of here. I was lucky to get a few shots of some during February 2020.

This was a sign marking a rural lane to a private home. My husband and I both wished it had been 1313 (in reference to the address where The Munsters lived in the old TV series.
Anyway, I liked the scene of the Northern Mockingbird near Camp Wood, Texas.
Got a few shots of this very cooperative and curious red-eyed vireo. July 2018 in Montell, Uvalde County.
One of the wildflowers that finally bloomed during June 2022 after a small bit of rainfall. We had so few wildflowers during the sping and summer of last year. Glad I saw this one. I like that the petals look like they are made of crepe paper.

This grasshopper chose to perch on an orange slice I had place out for birds. I wonder if it realized that it might be setting itself up to become food for the birds, too. The seed heads of bristle grass created some interesting lines.
