A slightly kinky view of a shrine in the Keshav Narayan Chowk in the Patan Museum, which is housed in the premises of the former Royal palace of the Newar kings in Lalitpur/ Patan, near Kathmandu, Nepal. I was avoiding taking a picture of this mosque-like building because of it's dazzling white exterior which would have been painful to view. This is because of the late morning sun beating down on it's milky white exterior in all it's glory. The mosque like building here is actually the Keshav Narayan temple- a Hindu temple- which gives the courtyard it's name. But my good guide took this picture anyway- I didn't know it at the time as I was busy photographing something else- but I decided to keep this picture- despite the odd framing- as I do not have any other picture of it. The Keshav Narayan Chowk is inside the Patan Museum, to the north of the Mul Chowk. Detailed notes about the Lalitpur/ Patan Durbar square where I am now appeared earlier in this album (see previous pictures) and will also appear later as we go along in this album (Lalitpur/ Patan Durbar Square, Nepal, Oct/ Nov 2019)

Gorkha was the birthplace of Prithvi Narayan Sha, conqueror of the Kathmandu Valley and founder of modern Nepal. It´s a major pilgrimage destination, particularly for Newars, who regard the Shah kings as living incarnation of Vishnu. The main attraction here is the Gorkha Durba, the former palace of the Shahs, which lords over Gorkha from a precarious ridge above the town.

SIGHTS

GORKHA DURBAR

Regarded by many as the crowning glory of Newari architecture, Gorkha Durbar is a fort, a palace and a temple all in one. This magnificent architectural confection is perched high above Gorkha on a knife-edge ridge, with superb views over the Trisuli Valley and the soaring peaks of the Annapurna and Ganesh Himalaya.

As the birthplace of Prithvi Narayan Shah, the Durbar has huge significance for Nepalis. The great Shah was born here in around 1723, when Gorkha was a minor feudal kingdom, in thrall to the larger citystates in the Kathmandu Valley. Upon gaining the throne, Prithvi Narayan forced the Kathmandu Valley into submission, forging a kingdom that extended far into India and Tibet. In 1769 the capital was shifted from Gorkha to Kathmandu and Gorkha was relegated to the status of a national monument.

To reach the durbar, you must climb an exhausting stairway of 1500 stone steps, snaking up the hillside above the Gorkha bus stand.

KALIKA MANDIR

Build in the reign of King Ram Shah (1606-36), but extensively remodelled over the years, the temple is a psychedelic fantasy of carved peacocks, demons and serpents. The woodcarving around the doors and windows is particularly striking - note the ornate peacock windows and the erotic scenes on the root struts.

Glory sacrifices of goats, chickens, doves and buffaloes are carried out in the courtyard in front of the temple to honour the Goddess Kali, the destructive incarnation of Parvati, the consort of Shiva. Only Brahmin priests and the king can enter the temple, but non-Hindus are permitted to observe sacrifices from the terrace.

DHUNI PATI

The other major structure in the compound is Dhuni Pati, the former palace of Prithvi Narayan Shah. Like the temple, the palace is covered in elaborate woodcarvings, including a magnificent window in the shape of Garuda, the man-bird vehicle of Vishnu. Non-Hindus cannot enter but can view the room where Prithvi Narayan Shah was born through an ornate star-shaped window.

GURU GORKHANATH SHRINE

Behind the palace is the mausoleum of Guru Gorkhanath, a reclusive saint who acted as a spiritual guide for the young Prithvi Narayan. This part of the compound is closed to non-Hindus, but you can descend some stone steps to peak into the cave where the saint once lived.

HANUMAN STATUE

If you leave via the northern gate, you´ll come to a vividly painted carving of Hanuman, the monkey god, and a series of carved stone steles. A path leads east from here past a large stone resting platform (chautara) to an exposed rocky bluff with awesome views of the mountains and a set of carved stone footprints, attributed variously to Sita, Rama, Gorkhanath and Guru Padmasambhava.

The durbar is an important religios site, and visitors must follow strict rules. Shoes should be removed and photography and leather - including belts - are banned inside the Durbar complex.

PRE EARTHQUAKE.

For most people (locals and tourists), they consider this spot in the mountain province their own personal Shangri-la. But a lot of low landers are also intimidated by the 12-hour bus ride winding through the mountain sides.

Lakshmi Narayan Mandir or Birla Mandir as it is popularly known is a must visit during Janamashtami celebrations in New Delhi (a festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna).

You are not allowed to take a camera inside, but it is very beautiful and very peaceful. There is an idol of Sri Krishna with mirrors on the four walls and ceiling so that you get to see multiple images of Sri Krishna. The temple enshrines almost all the deities of the Hindu Pantheon, the presiding deity being Narayan (Vishnu, the preserver in Hindu trinity) and his consort Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and good fortune.

It was built in 1938 in the Orissan Style. Exterior is of White Marble and Red Sandstone with Tall Curved Towers. The sacred Lakshmi Narayan Temple is situated on Mandir Marg, 1.5 km due west of Connaught Place.

Don't miss the soaring spires of the shrine, the highest nestling above the sanctum sanctorum, soaring with its head high at almost 160 ft. 101 skilled pundits from Varanasi, headed by Acharya Vishvanath Shastri, were employed to create this magic in stones

The Laxminarayan Temple, also known as the Birla Mandir is a Hindu temple up to large extent dedicated to Laxminarayan in Delhi, India. Laxminarayan usually refers to Vishnu, Preserver in the Trimurti, also known as Narayan, when he is with his consort Lakshmi. The temple, inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi, was built by Jugal Kishore Birla from 1933 and 1939. The side temples are dedicated to Shiva, Krishna and Buddha.

It was the first large Hindu temple built in Delhi. The temple is spread over 7.5 acres, adorned with many shrines, fountains, and a large garden with Hindu and Nationalistic sculptures, and also houses Geeta Bhawan for discourses. The temple is one of the major attractions of Delhi and attracts thousands of devotees on the festivals of Janmashtami and Diwali.

HISTORY

The construction of temple dedicated to Laxmi Narayana started in 1933, built by industrialist and philanthropist, Baldeo Das Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla of Birla family, thus, the temple is also known as Birla Temple. The foundation stone of the temple was laid by Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh. The temple was built under guidance of Pandit Vishwanath Shastri. The concluding ceremony and Yagna was performed by Swami Keshwa Nandji. The famous temple is accredited to have been inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1939. At that time, Mahatma Gandhi kept a condition that the temple would not be restricted to the upper-caste Hindus and people from every caste would be allowed inside.

This is the first of a series of temples built by the Birlas in many cities of India, which are also often called Birla Temple.

ARCHITECTURE

Its architect was Sris Chandra Chatterjee, a leading proponent of the "Modern Indian Architecture Movement." The architecture was influenced heavily by the principles of the Swadeshi movement of the early twentieth century and the canonical texts used. The movement did not reject the incorporation of new construction ideas and technologies. Chatterjee extensively used modern materials in his buildings. The three-storied temple is built in the northern or Nagara style of temple architecture. The entire temple is adorned with carvings depicting the scenes from golden yuga of the present universe cycle. More than hundred skilled artisans from Benares, headed by Acharya Vishvanath Shastri, carved the icons of the temple. The highest shikhara of the temple above the sanctum sanctorum is about 160 feet high. The temple faces the east and is situated on a high plinth. The shrine is adorned with fresco paintings depicting his life and work. The icons of the temple are in marble brought from Jaipur. Kota stone from Makarana, Agra, Kota, and Jaisalmer was used in the construction of the temple premises. The Geeta Bhawan to the north of the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Artificial landscape and cascading waterfalls add to the beauty of the temple.

TEMPLE

The main temple houses statues of Lord Narayan and Goddess Lakshmi. There are other small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Hanuman. There is also a shrine dedicated to Lord Buddha. The left side temple shikhar (dome) houses Devi Durga, the goddess of Shakti, the power. The temple is spread over an area of 30,000 m2 approximately and the built up area is 2,100 m2.

LOCATION

The temple is located on the Mandir Marg, situated west of the Connaught Place in New Delhi. The temple is easily accessible from the city by local buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws. Nearest Delhi Metro station is R. K. Ashram Marg metro station, located about 2 km away. Also on the same road lies the New Delhi Kalibari.

WIKIPEDIA

As a part of Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagores 150 th Anniversary celebrations,Shovana Narayan performed Tagore’s poignant short story titled ‘Shuoranir Shadh’. The tale has at its center the two diametrically opposite characters of Shuorani and Duorani. While Shuorani revels in wealth and happiness, Duorani epitomizes everything that is dark , disturbing and related to pathos. The traditional associations of happiness and sorrow are playfully subverted as the boundaries between the two merge, as it becomes clear that real happiness emerges out of depths of darkness and sorrow.

Shuorani, the queen of happiness has everything that a woman could desire – wealth, and adoration of her husband. The king who is madly in love with her banishes his first wife Duorani, the queen of sorrow. Yet, Shuorani is unwell and the king’s doctor fails to cure her.

Shuorani share her sorrow with her friend. She ultimately comes to the conclusion, that to be a complete woman she needs to undergo all experiences of life, so much so that Shuorani yearns to go through the pain of Duorani.

Shovana Narayan has received a number of honours including the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Kathak dance.

Currently in the process of restoration, the Amar Narayan Mandir is a classic three-tiered, pagoda-style wooden Vishnu temple. The mandir was built in 1807 by Amar Singh Thapa, the first governor of Tansen, and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful temples outside Kathmandu Valley.

The carved wooden deities are exquisite; with erotic scenes on the roof struts and the alternating skulls and animal heads on the lintel. According to a legend, a holy spring (lake) is hidden under the temple. Devotees come here every evening to light butter lamps in honour of the patron deity, Lord Vishnu.

Point of view is between Maha darwaja and Narayan darwaja.
